ESPN's U.S. National Team Blog discusses the options available to replace Charlie Davies at forward
and also mentions a rumor that Carlos Bocanegra might be on the move from Rennes to St. Etienne.

Photo by ISIphotos.comAs you may know by now, I had the opportunity to interview U.S. national team striker Charlie
Davies last Friday in his first detailed interview since the car accident that nearly took his
life. What I found was a player in the midst of an amazing recovery, a Charlie Davies who looked
much more like the Davies we knew before last October's deadly car cash than the Davies we saw look
so swollen and unfamiliar in the interview he did with ESPN in late November.
I just had lunch with a Greek man at an Australian restaurant (only in New York) and Sportscenter
was running a quasi-maudlin piece on the recovery of Charlie Davies; even as they were saying that
he's healing at Wolverine speed they still said it with an aire of doom & tragedy around it.
There's an interesting article over at the NY Times Goal Blog that looks at who will replace
Clint Dempsey for the US if he's not fit for the World Cup. It's a good piece, but I do take issue
with the main premise Jeffrey Marcus looks at replacement midfielders (Rogers, Holden, and
Kljestan), but I feel that Dempsey should be playing forward, where he generally lines up at
Fulham.
When I ran into Gooch in Philly at the SuperDraft/NSCAA Convention a few weeks ago, some people
didn't appreciate it and some did. Oh well, you can't please everyone (unless you are Kaka...nobody
seems to hate that guy). Now I just scratched the surface because A) I am a blogger and not a
journalist or broadcaster or any of things I have been rumored to be, B) I was not prepared to ask
for more than I did, and C) Gooch has a schedule to keep Cotdamnit.

Charlie Davies has a message for all the doubters who didn't believe him when he said he would
be back for the 2010 World Cup.
You just don't know.
If you've read my ESPN.com story on Davies, you know how determined he is to come back, and just
how far he has already come since the accident.
Holy crap, Charlie Davies is going to play in the World Cup. Yesterday's story from Ives Galarcep
has shot through the American soccer community like a missile of good feelings. In its wake,
every...
As the US took the field to play Honduras Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, nobody was
any under illusions about the nature of the game. It was a friendly in the friendliest sense.
The pregame party in the parking lot was full of good cheer. The Honduras fans, which outnumbered
the US fans by 4 to 1, heartily applauded when Jonathan Bornstein, whose late strike against Costa
Rica in October sent Honduras into the World Cup finals, was introduced.
Ives Galarcep did a great interview with Charlie Davies part of which is posted on ESPN's Soccernet
and part of which is posted on Ives' website Soccer by Ives. Definitely check these out!
After a phenomenal run at the 2009 Confederations Cup that saw the team finally fall to an
experienced Brazilian side, the USA is set to play England in it's first group match of the 2010
World Cup. One of the promising new youngsters of the tournament was Charlie Davies, who with his
pace and invention added a new dimension to Red White & Blue alongside Jozy Altidore.
Utaka has failed to live up to his reputation thus far in England
A bit of what's
in Butt's Brain today...
- We put John Utaka in our starting lineup as a striker for our Fantasy Premier League "Best
Eleven" selection this week. He rewarded us with 8 points - his highest output of the season by
far.
