Apple Valley boys soccer team has won the 2010 FieldTurf award for the Great Lakes Region High
School Team of the Year. Apple Valley went undefeated this year for the second consecutive year and
ended the season 24-0-0. The team ended the season with their 48th consecutive win started in
August of 2009.
NASL teams have been busy recently, not only with the NASL Player Combine in sunny Florida this
past weekend but in signing veteran players for the 2011 season. FC Tampa Bay announced the
signing of veteran defender Frankie Sanfilippo, while the Puerto Rico Islanders also reached out
for experienced backline leadership by adding former Aztex' captain Jay Needham.
Partnership equals profit.
The debate will always rage between the fans of a European game and the MLS system faithful: the
debate of relegation. This article is not about that. Relegation is not a reality in modern
American soccer, so let it rest. Instead the focus is on the relationship between Major League
Soccer (MLS) and the second tier North American Soccer League (NASL).
While we await the final release of the MLS schedule, second-division USL Pro announced their
schedule and division alignments on Friday, emphasizing the league's accessibility and stability.
The press release from USL Pro emphasizes that six of their franchises have more than ten years of

The Richmond Kickers winning streak continued in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 rout of the Dayton
Dutch Lions.
The USL Pro leaders have one five-straight game to begin the season and have racked up a +9 goal
difference in that time.
Not to be outdone, Antigua Barracuda FC put seven by Puerto Rico United on Wednesday before
squeaking out a narrow victory over River Plate Puerto Rico over the weekend.
Another week of former Wizards updates. A day late after the Sporting KC home game last night. The
European season is winding down, and another former Wizard has appeared. Diego Walsh has apparently
signed with the Charleston Battery, meaning there are 3 former Wizards playing in Charleston as he
joins Stephen Armstrong and John Wilson.

Orlando City took advantage of its rivals being on hiatus during the weekend to increase its
lead in the ultra-competitive American Division to seven points.
Orlando scored three times in the second half to earn a comeback victory over a Wilmington team
that was riding a four-game unbeaten streak.

Lamar Neagle has broken onto the scene this season in Major League Soccer. After taking time to
develop in the USL-2 with the Charleston Battery, Neagle returned to his home state to play for the
Seattle Sounders. This season has become a career year for the winger/forward. We checked in with
Lamar to ask about everything from the Open Cup to the locker room antics.

Welcome to the USL, Los Angeles.
The expansion L.A. Blues started off their existence with a couple of victories on the road over
Sevilla FC Puerto Rico and fellow newcomer Antigua Barracuda FC. Walter Gaitan is off to a
blistering start with three goals in two games.

Try as they might, the Wilmington Hammerheads couldn't stop a Richmond Kickers side that is
starting to look unbeatable early in the 2011 USL Pro season.
Two second-half goals from Richmond canceled out an early goal from Wilmington as the Kickers
got the better of a match-up between two unbeaten teams.

The Richmond Kickers had to drop points eventually.
After an eight-game winning streak kicked off their season in style, the Kickers were held to a
1-1 draw with the Harrisburg City Islanders. Richmond continues to be the only unbeaten team left
in the USL Pro and holds a one-point lead with two games in hand over Antigua Barracuda FC in the
Atlantic Division.

The Richmond Kickers' fall from grace continued with a 1-1 draw to FC New York on Saturday.
Richmond is winless in four games after starting the season with a six-game winning streak. The
Kickers find themselves three points behind Orlando City with no games in hand.
Due to high demand (1 person asked) we are going to run a 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup contest.
The unique nature of this tournament makes an NCAA style bracket is impossible; hosts aren't known
throughout the tournament and we still don't know match-ups for the eight MLS teams that will enter
the contest in the Third Round.
Here are highlights from our second USL Pro Game of the Week broadcast on Fox Soccer over the
weekend. We had a great atmosphere and pretty exciting game in Orlando between City and the
Wilmington Hammerheads.
This week we travel to Wilmington, North Carolina as the Hammerheads take on the Charleston
Battery.
A few days late (I was on vacation, sue me), but here are the highlights from last week's USL
Pro Game of the Week between the Wilmington Hammerheads and Charleston Battery on FOX Soccer.
This week (tomorrow night, actually) we're in New York as FC New York hosts Antigua Barracuda
FC.
FC Dallas midfielder Eric Avila may soon be playing in Mexico.
Avila is on his way to Guadalajara to potentially seal a six-month loan to Primera Division side
Atlas, FC Dallas announced on Friday. Should he join Atlas, he would be the second MLS player to go
there this season after Chicago sold Gaston Puerari to Atlas a couple of weeks ago.

After 20 weeks of regular season play, the playoff picture in the USL Pro came into focus in
dramatic fashion with a flurry of high-scoring games.
The Charlotte Eagles failed to lock up a playoff spot with a mid-week loss to the Harrisburg
City Islanders and fell late in a 4-3 shootout with Charleston, which would claim the final
post-season berth in the American Division.
When Osvaldo Alonso signed with the Seattle Sounders back in the fall of 2008 it was coming off
a season with the Charleston Battery that wasn't just impressive, but amazing. He was the team
Player of Year, led the team to a US Open Cup Final appearance (after beating Seattle in the
semis), USL-1 Rookie of Year, scored seven goals and assisted on seven more.
COLUMBUS, Ohio Columbus Crew signed forward Tom Heinemann to a multi-year contract Friday.
Heinemann joins the Crew after spending the last two years with the Charleston Battery of the
United Soccer Leagues and Carolina RailHawks of the NASL. He trained with the Crew briefly early in
the 2009 preseason.

After putting last season's historically bad campaign in the rear-view mirror, D.C. United is
aiming for a fresh start with Ben Olsen at the helm of a team on a mission.
With a bevy of new faces in camp and a fresh attitude to boot, expectations of a vast
improvement are abound in the nation's capital.
This has been a busy week for USL PRO as they prepare for the upcoming D3 season. The fifteen
team league will kick off its 2011 season on Saturday, April 2 with two matches featuring
International Division rivals River Plate Puerto Rico taking on Sevilla FC Puerto Rico while the
new SC Orlando City club debuts against the two -time USL-2 regular season champions, the Richmond
Kickers.

2011 is a year of new beginnings for Toronto FC.
An 11th-placed finish in last year's campaign fell wildly short of both fan and ownership
expectations, resulting in the ousting of head coach Preki and director of soccer Mo Johnston.
Under the advisement of former German national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Toronto hired Ajax
assistant Aron Winter head coach and brought Paul Mariner back to the MLS as director of player
development following his unsucessful stint as manager of Plymouth North End.
