Two of the best players in the U.S. national team youth system will be taking their development
to Europe.
According to Justin Rodriguez at ESPN (click here for the original article and all the details),
Gyau (16) and Renken (15) have signed multi-year contracts with Bundesliga upstarts 1899
Hoffenheim. Some quotes that should encourage US fans and allay concerns of player development
are:
"The key to the decision made by the boys and their families is that Hoffenheim constructed an
outstanding path for their development as players," Segal said.
Two of the most well regarded US U-17 prospects are set to pack their bags and head of to join
Hoffenheim's youth academy. Joseph Gyau and Charles Renken who have spent the last two years at
Residency will both head to Germany next month. Read on...I really like this move a lot.
Hoffenheim are a team on the rise backed by SAP creator Dietmar Hopp, and the two will be in a
competitive environment that will nurture their development.
It's been a pretty good Tuesday around the world of soccer. Jozy Alitdore scored his first goal
for Hull City and some young Americans are getting their shot in Germany. I know I've been a bit
quiet these last couple of days, just expect more of that in the coming couple weeks as my wedding
and honeymoon approach.
Soccernet is reporting that US u17 starlets Joseph Gyau and Charles Renken have signed contracts
with German Club 1899 Hoffenheim. The two youngsters, who are generally considered the top two
prospects in the u17 squad, will split time between Hoffenheim and the Vancouver Whitecaps youth
academy for the next year, before a full time move to Germany.
1899 Hoffenheim was the biggest story in European football last fall. The newly promoted side was
leading the Bundesliga as Christmas approached. Of course, Hoffenheim fell off but they left their
mark on the world of football and the Bundesliga.
Today, Hoffenheim signed two of the best young American prospects ever: attacker Joseph-Claude
Gyau and midfielder Charles Renken.
STARTERS
Two of the USA's brightest young prospects are headed for Germany. Justin Rodriquez of ESPN
Soccernet reports that both Charles Renken and Joseph Gyau of the USA U17 Residency Program have
signed with Hoffenheim. The German club also has a connection to the Vancouver Whitecaps (this is
breaking news to me as well) and the players will see some of their time spent in BC at the
residency program there as well as with the senior team in Germany.
