Saturday brought the shattering news of the death of Nigel Doughty, owner of Nottingham Forest. In
our latest conversation piece, we talk to Steve Wright of the website Mist Rolling in from the
Trent about the past few years at the City Ground and the atmosphere of turmoil that has
enveloped the club.
By Chris Wright
Early on Saturday morning Nottingham Forest owner and former chairman Nigel Doughty was found
dead, aged 54, in the gym at his home in Lincolnshire.
A Forest fan from birth, Doughty saved the club and I don't use that term flippantly from being
reduced to it's component parts and being flogged off to the highest bidders when he bought
his football team using nigh-on £11 million of his own personal wealth back in 1999.
My friends and I often indulge in extended debate on the club vs. country issue and how so far,
it's ‘OK' to support England. We eschew the jingoism, the hooliganism, the sheer repugnance of
many of those called on to sport the jersey, the overreaction to defeat and over-anticipation of
victory, the arrogance and the aggression, but still wish for a team we can support.
Forgive me for any emotion, but I love Nottingham Forest. And Nigel Doughty saved my club. After
buying the club for £11 million in 1999 after the club had entered administration, Doughty
ploughed £100 million of his own money into the club, allowing Forest to mount a series of playoff
campaigns in an effort to [.
After a two month hiatus, our Great Teams series is up and running again with this account of
Blackburn Rovers' return to the top echelon in 2001, a third Lancastrian study in a row after Fiona
Martin and myself considered matters Blackpool and Bolton in turn. You can follow Phil on twitter

I've been waiting for a video of this to surface since Tuesday night, in so far as it was the
only slight sliver of a shred of commiseration we Forest fans were able to take from the night.
Burnley won 2-0. Rodriguez scored them both.
Anyway, with the score at 1-0, the man they call 'Jay Rod' up around Turf Moor way stepped up
and performed a timely homage to John Terry's infamously spunked Moscow spot-kick which proved to
be the only highlight of the game from a Forest perspective.
Oh God Jay Rod It isn't much fun being a Nottingham Forest fan at the moment, this much I can vouch
for. Second bottom of the Championship despite being tipped for promotion during preseason, fans
have not seen the club score at home since November, and third manager of the season Steve
Cotterill looks seemingly [.
Signing of the season?
So one of the most exciting days of the season is over, and Jim White's excitable gossip-hungry
clone can go back into suspended animation until next year. Yet spending is down nearly 70% versus
last year's January deadline, where Torres and Carroll dominated the headlines.
Being forced to sell his captain during the January and consequently losing matches heavily did for
Simon Grayson. While OTP feels slightly sorry for the recently sacked Grayson, we won't be dwelling
on his departure for too long because there are some exciting prospects in contention to be the new
boss at Elland [.

After three years in charge, a promotion from League One and decent finish in the Championship
last year, Leeds United have seen fit in their infinite wisdom to sack manager Simon Grayson with
the club 'languishing' in tenth position after losing 4-1 at home to Birmingham last night.
Our latest guest post sees us welcome Tom Victor. Tom is the Major League Soccer Correspondent for

brings his attention to the extraordinary development of family tradition at that storied east
London club.
Okay, you can all relax now. Turns out that our hero, Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, will
NOT be sanctioned for allegedly throwing an elbow in the face of defender Carlos Cuéllar, after
all. Had the Football Association chosen to sanction him, and there certainly seemed to be
justification for doing so, the punishment to both Robin as an individual and Arsenal as a cohesive
whole would have been severe enough, considering the awful timing, to virtually end the team's
season on quite a sour note.

Bloated Premier League squads need ballast and amid the burnt ends of Match of the Day episodes,
the fleeting few minutes of highlights from the KC, Molineux or DW Stadiums have been notable for
their late cameos from players unfamiliar – your Henrik Pedersens, Okelsandr Yevtushoks and
Itzhak Zohars – the men you feel yourself reaching for the Rothman's successor volume to run the
rule over, or, laptop on knees, Wikipedia.
Stage 3 of our examination of the financial architecture of the Football League's clubs sees us
head to Coventry. Ian Palmer is a friend and associate of Neil Allison, custodian of the Sky Blues
Blog and here provides his thoughts on the slough of despond facing the Sky Blues, a situation that
has been allowed to develop both on and off the pitch.
Newcastle could find themselves in an unlikely bidding war with the son of Watford manager Sean
Dyche. That's if the Hornets boss' tongue-in-cheek comments about the Magpies' bid for defender
Adrian Mariappa. Dyche has rejected a bid of £750,000 and an improved bid of £2m for the
25-year-old. He said: "A bid has been made [.
Arsene Wenger keeps going on about he will only ever spend money in the transfer window if he can
find "super-quality" players or "better than we already have". Well I personally think that it
would be VERY easy to find players that are better than most of our current squad! So I found this
excellent [.

Like a deleted scene from the airport bit in Love Actually, Leicester City pair Sean St. Ledger

This week, we shall be running a series of five posts examining the fortunes of 5 clubs that have
experienced significant financial and/or organisational turmoil in recent times. Unfortunately,
this cross section is but the very precarious tip of a very grubby iceberg indeed - and if you
think the problems we shall detail are unique to this quintet alone or indeed the 72 clubs in the
Football League, then think again.

Every week, my brother places an accumulator on various Football League results, only a few
quid, but enough to make it fairly interesting. To this date, he has never won.
Nottingham Forest fans read on, for we are very pleased to welcome back Glen Wilson, steward of
Doncaster Rovers' Popular STAND Fanzine and late of award winning blog, Viva Rovers. Here Glen
provides us with an insight into Sean O'Driscoll, recently installed in a supporting role to Steve
Cotterill at the City Ground.
If one remembers the instant relegation Brighton and Hove Albion suffered on the last occasion they
ascended to English football's second level, it's been a heartening first half of the season for
the Seagulls. Many expected them to do well given the verve they showed in cantering to the League
1 title in May and a position just four points off the play off zone constitutes real progress.

We like it when the internet throws up a slightly unexpected video. For example, when we got up
this morning we didn't know we would be writing about Portsmouth cult hero Linvoy Primus. And we
definitely didn't think we would be featuring him bowling. Big Linvoy doesn't even have to watch
the ball as it [.

"Here love, put down the ironing for a minute, my car bonnet needs a good

Ipswich lost again last night; 2-1 to Birmingham, Nikola Zigic nabbing the winner in stoppage
time, their 11th defeat in 14 matches.
Manager Paul Jewell was also left fuming over an incident in which Ipswich winger Lee Martin was
fouled in the box by Brum's Stephen Caldwell and no penalty was given on the insistence of the
referee's assistant a lady human with a vulva and everything by the name of Amy Fearn.
No Tractor Girls allowed Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell is at the centre of a sexism row after
post-match comments about a female assistant referee. The Tractor Boys' gaffer was infuriated after
his side were refused a late penalty at Birmingham only for the home side to grab a winner. He was
in no doubt [.
One of this website's latest followers on Twitter, Simeon F. W. Pickup states his interests as
‘Reading FC, Atheism, Labour. In that order.' Although Ed Miliband's negligible impact on the
polls may have something to do with his party being relegated behind Brian McDermott and Richard
Dawkins in Simeon's thinking, I did read this as tongue in cheek.

nothing better than to rail against anyone who disagrees with him on Twitter under the nom de plume
of @epouvantail - he's a little smug at the moment given the club's continued robust play-off push.

talento.

It has been a while since we previewed a Championship game, instead focusing on the no less
riveting events further down the ladder. But which to choose? Two of last year's big-hitters, Leeds
and Reading, meet at Elland Road this weekend, but neither have done much to grab the attention so
far this term.

One of the more bizarre incidents of the weekend's action came from the clash between Reading and
West Ham. The Royals' Jimmy Kebe decided to rub salt into the Hammers' wounds with a bit of
sock-related showboating. The Mali international chose to highlight the amount of time he was
getting on the ball by pulling [.
Following our assessment of the Premier League potential of the current Southampton squad back in
October, the Saints have opened a three point gap at the top of the Championship table. Just behind
them sit the club many tipped to enact a rapid response to relegation in May. West Ham have yo-yoed
somewhat over the past decade and it would certainly be no surprise to see them occupy one of the
top two slots come the end of the season, especially with a manager as experienced as Sam Allardyce
at the helm, as well as a defensive coach of no mean reputation.
