Not perfect, but the performance got the job done. And no yellow cards, which means no one is
suspended for the game at Trinidad and Tobago, where the USA has an opportunity for some road
points.

chance to put a stop to that threat.

And those words are: Not the time to tinker.
Let me be clear at the beginning. I'm not a coach, I've never been a coach, and I don't have
access to the kinds and amounts of information an MLS coach has at his disposal, nor the skills to
interpret it. But, having said that, I just plain didn't understand Bruce Arena's
starting lineup yesterday.
Three headers score the goals.
Cristian Castillo puts El Salvador up through a beautiful bit of trickery by Ramon Sanchez that
freezes three US defenders allowing him to loft a cross that finds Castillo heading the ball past
Tim Howard.
The US replies through Clint Dempsey (third time lucky) and Jozy Altidore.
Pardon me, but what the hell was that?
You knew we were going to have issues with Sr. Pineda when he started the game acting for all the
world like Chad Marshall had said something about his mother. The guy couldn't adjust his jock
without hearing the whistle.
And apparently jumping for a header while an opponent with his back to the ball jumps on you like a
drunk 16 year old on a prom date is against the rules.
Saturday night's unimpressive victory over El Salvador might have given the U.S. Men's National
Team three vital points, but a World Cup spot is by no means assured. Bob Bradley's team will
likely need to win two of its last three games to book its trip to South Africa. With the easiest
of the three games, at Trinidad and Tobago, on the docket for Wednesday night, a victory is needed
right away.

That was closer than it should have been.
Standings and upcoming schedule
And it remains close.
Earlier this week I spoke to the Galaxy's Landon Donovan and asked whether the team was more
aware now of giving up the first goal at home, a question he misinterpreted to mean whether they
were more aware now of the importance of scoring first.
In all seriousness, what the hell are you trying to do? That "win" against Trinidad & Tobago last
night was the stuff of nightmares. And not normal nightmares where you're falling or you're being
chased by a knife-wielding Jay Heaps in a Chivas mask. We're talking far worse.
I mean, my god, I turn on the TV and it's like your old Metrostars team has somehow found itself in
a CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Hexagonal.

The U.S. men's national team hasn't booked its place in the 2010 World Cup just yet, but a pair
of recent qualifying wins has the Americans on the doorstep.
Regarding what happened yesterday? I'm over it. Done. New day. Time to end suckers.
At least RSL and TFC lost last night. Thank god. The only bad part was having to listen to Glenn
Davis be a smarmy tool throughout the Houston game. As for Houston and Kinnear? That's a team
slowly dying inside:
A visibly frustrated Dominic Kinnear could be seen on the bench and the Dynamo
continued to make poor decisions on the ball, lacked movement and generally played
direct.
The tough are apparently getting going. Remember when the season started, and the Crew neglected to
beat anyone until May? Remember when the Crew ran into a Mexican cement truck at the end of August,
then made a starring role in Richie Williams' audition tape?
The Crew's September schedule consisted of the other three top MLS teams, Cruz Azul, and Saprissa.

Big weekend with lots of playoff implications. First up, us and New England. Basically, nobody
expects us to win this game, not even me. Everyone on the team has spent the week bitching about
having to fly to Boston - never mind that they already played us in Seattle. So you know our heads
are in the right places.
So, no points in New England. It happens. Everyone got all excited when we went ahead, but when
you're relying on world class goals (and damn, that was amazing), you're going to come up
short.
As for the Revs, I can't see New England going very far in the playoffs, especially if Ralston's
badly injured.
On a stormy Saturday night in Columbus, 21,000 fans packed into Crew Stadium hoping to see one
of two things: 1) A Massive win extending an unbeaten streak to 24 games, or 2) David Beckham. I'm
not going to say who was in the majority, but I will tell you that only one of those groups got
what they come for.
