Wolves preview + Saturday round-up

Arseblog 07 November @ 03:10 AM EST

Good Saturday to you all. Here is the news.

It looks like Manuel Almunia is back in pole position. Or, he would be if Arsenal was a Forumula 1 team and he'd just come fastest in qualifying, but you know what I mean. A mixture of a chest infection, family tragedy and just plain old poor form meant his start to the season was a bit all over the shop, but it seems as if the manager is ready to put his faith in him again.

Wednesday’s win over Alkmaar was more important that it may have seemed

The Beautiful Groan 06 November @ 10:23 AM EST

The 4-1 thumping of Alkmaar in midweek was an immensely satisfying affair, a triumph of footballing philosophy over the defensive nous of coaches such as Ronald Koeman, and yet another demonstration that this Arsenal team is serious about combining footballing beauty with tangible success.

But prior the the match, there was a definite sense of relaxation amongst the fans, as if the game really didn't matter, so assured was our progress regardless of the result.

Video: Arsenal smack AZ Alkmaar, 4-1 in the return

Soccerblog 04 November @ 08:19 PM EST

Arsenal came into its own with crisp, free flowing football. Cesc with a brace, Nasri with a very welcome contribution on his return, and Diaby rounded up the scoring. But Arshavin was the source having a hand in three of the goals. And Wenger singled him out.

Wenger highlighted Andrey Arshavin - who had a hand in three of the goals - for special praise, saying: "He was outstanding.

Phew, writing something vaguely interesting (even for me) at this time of the night here is hard enough. Where do I start? I know, I'll start with a Lithuanian most of you have forgotten about.

I was watching (albeit very briefly) Inter at Livorno the other day. It finished 2-0 to Inter btw.

Spurs trash talk ridiculed in 11 seconds & Why our fans should take a bow

Gunners Today 01 November @ 07:00 AM EST

Hello to all of you reading this on a Sunday or Monday or maybe even 3 years time when you are caught reminiscing about this game making it 20 games unbeaten against Spurs.

Like the title says, 11 seconds, that is all it took for Spurs to crumble and fall to the knees (literally when Cesc went past half of the Spurs team for his goal).

Top four ‘Arry, your’e having a laugh…….

Avenell Road 01 November @ 04:43 AM EST

Morning All – I did a little bit of multi-tasking yesterday, using my vast experience and skill around the keyboard; I typed while watching our wonderful team put in a lunchtime shift at the Emirates!
Ok, I am fibbing, I just typed as I watched and corrected a huge amount of spelling mistakes afterwards, it took an age!

The Derby

EPL Talk 31 October @ 10:07 AM EST

So yet another installment of the fiery North London derby has passed. Tottenham, missing Jermaine Defoe through a suspension and Aaron Lennon through injury, looked a shadow of the side which threatened to take over one of the top 4 spots earlier in the season. Arsenal, on the other hand, were magnificent.

Its Raining Men…

Avenell Road 31 October @ 03:12 AM EST

Well it will have to if the big city of London has had the rainfall we have had here in Berkshire!!

The Daily Telegraph, well the Belfast version reports Cesc has signed a pre-contract agreement with Barca! Worried for a second, but then I saw the word ‘Adeybayor' in the same sentence you know him, the one who feels he has the right to an opinion about us!

Spurs preview – who will play in goal?

The Beautiful Groan 30 October @ 08:26 PM EST

With Almunia frozen out, and Mannone beginning to show understandable signs of being a little out of his depth in the first team at this early stage of his career, the stage seemed set for Fabianski to return to the fray against Spurs this afternoon, especially after a decent showing against Liverpool in midweek.

Arshavin or Cesc? Who is the more deserving for the Ballon D’or?

Gunners Today 22 October @ 01:03 PM EST

At the Euro 2008 Semi Final, I love this picture! Thanks to whoever who took it.

Two of Arsenal's holy trinity have been nominated for this prestigious award. The third component of this trinity, Robin van Persie curiously has been ignored. Since November 2008, Robin has been the most consistent Gooner full stop.

Deja Vu

Arsenal Station 21 October @ 07:36 AM EST

See below for match highlights followed by Arsene Wenger's post-match interview.

Tuesday's match with AZ Alkmaar was full of deja vu on so many levels. Arsenal created a similar amount of chances to most of their other matches this season. Also, our inability to take our chances and kill the game off with the second goal was reminiscent of last season.

Mediocre Arsenal get a mediocre result. Match report.

Arsereview 21 October @ 07:19 AM EST
Wenger got the team wrong last night. But first, it's important to recognise a couple of things.
Firstly, a draw away in Europe is never a bad result. We had six points on the board, now we have seven. So despite Alkmaar's last minute equaliser we're sure to go through. Which is more than can be said for Liverpool. Click to continue reading...

AZ Alkmaar 1-1 Arsenal : Even Stevie Wonder could see that goal coming

Arseblog 21 October @ 02:09 AM EST

The Champions League group stages are not renowned for providing scintillating, exciting football and last night was no exception.

A rather dull game looked like it was going to provide Arsenal with three points but there was an inevitability about AZ's late equaliser. Ronald Koemen said before the game that Arsenal had defects and although it took them 93 minutes to exploit one, exploit it they did.

Report Card: Ballon d’Or Nominations

Premiership Talk Blog 19 October @ 09:36 AM EST

With the Ballon d'Or nominations finally releasing this weekend, the headlines have mostly been devoted to the fact that world champions Italy have no representation whatsoever. But why blame the press for paying excessive attention to an irrelevant detail? After all, the award itself is destined to be heading Lionel Messi's way, which means very little is there to be talked about in terms of debating the winner, right?

Arsenal 3, Birmingham City 1

Wicked Deflection 19 October @ 09:31 AM EST
That was an oddly hard game to find. I had to watch it on tape delay on Arsenal.com.
Two quick goals in the first half from Van Persie and Diaby were enough for the points.
Walcott started ahead of Arshavin, but Walcott went off injured in the first half, and Arshavin played the last hour, scoring the third in the 85th minute, I think it was. Click to continue reading...

Damage Assessment

Arsenal Station 16 October @ 07:17 AM EST

On the Thursday and Friday following an international break, the club generally goes into damage assessment mode. The question is never, "Is anyone hurt?" But, rather, "Who is hurt, and for how long?" Last month, I posted my recurring international break nightmare. It is also the time to forgot all the "Cesc-to-anywhere-but-Arsenal" stories, which for some reason continue to get Gooners all worked up.

Back to League action tomorrow with the visit of Birmingham City. Let's hope the international break hasn't disrupted the momentum that was building before the players scattered for the World Cup qualifiers. We need three points in the bag. Manuel Almunia is said to be "50-50" for availability for selection.

Ramsey wants/needs games. But where does he play & when? & Coquelin’s ambition

Gunners Today 15 October @ 11:37 AM EST

One of the things I hate about people, life if you may, is when promises are broken. If you can't keep 'em, don't make 'em! I once told my friend I'd visit him when he was living in a different city. But due to one thing or another, I never got around to it.

If we are to believe what Ramsey has said recently, Wenger is looking to start him in 15-20 games this year.

While Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas has clearly enjoyed his Spain side cruise to the World Cup 2010 finals with a perfect record (and no goals conceded at home), he has spoken to Arsenal.com to offer some backing to a couple of his teammates who won't be appearing in the showpiece event next summer.

Football, here we come!

The Goon Blog - an Arsenal blog. 15 October @ 04:51 AM EST

Good Morning all of you, wherever on God's green earth you might be.

The damned internationals have finally come to an end, which means some real football is right around the corner. I hope all the players have manage to avoid getting crocked up as beginning Saturday, we'd see a busy month ahead in terms of football as we've got 5 games in 3 different competitions and lets not forget the all important North London Derby, so we'd need all of our first team to be fit for action.

Ramsey: An Embryonic Cross Between Cesc, Lumplard and Gerrard

Avenell Road 15 October @ 04:37 AM EST

Ramsey scored from a freekick for Wales yesterday ......

"Arsenal teenager Ramsey whipped in a free kick that breezed the hairline of the wall and curled into the top left corner."

"This lad is going to be very special one day – he is looking like an embryonic cross between Cesc, Lumplard and Gerrard – fantastic passing, great shot and can orchestrate the game pulling all the strings" (Rasputin)

Good summary.

Why there should be no Paddy reunion at Arsenal

Arsenal Insider 13 October @ 06:36 AM EST

With another round of International world cup qualifiers and friendlies taking place, we gooners have to find a way to pass the weekend without our beloved team in action. With Arsenal scoring goals for fun from all positions of the pitch, the International break has come at a wrong time for the team.

Ever been hurt by a paper aeroplane? Why flare it up, Cesc, Theo & Notts County/Chelsea

Gunners Today 13 October @ 12:00 AM EST

Don't worry, I'm not advertising any insurance here. Not sure about the odds but you'd be very unlucky to get hurt by a paper aeroplane that's for sure. Seriously though, have you ever been hurt by one? If so, is it as bad as David James makes it out to be? This is what he said,

They were big flares, granted, but you could argue that someone throwing a paper aeroplane on the pitch might take someone's eye out.

Non-Stop Drama Raises Italian Stock

Premiership Talk Blog 12 October @ 11:44 PM EST

Beyond the nation's borders, Italian football has certainly faded into the background in recent years. A devastating match-fixing scandal in 2006 bitterly overshadowed the country's World Cup triumph that year while the domestic league has clearly become a one-horse race ever since. Reigning champions Inter Milan have shown no signs of a slip up in the Serie A for the last three seasons and that trend continued with their strong start to the current season as well.

Hello there everyone. A fine Monday to you all. Hope everyone had a good weekend even though there was no Arsenal. Mine was pretty good. My Under-9 boys team got their first win of the season in our third match of the year. We won 6-1 after losing 8-0 and 7-0 in our first two matches. So it was a big victory for us and we'll be looking to keep that run going. Click to continue reading...
