EURO 2008: Austria 0-1 Germany, Ernst-Happel Stadion, Vienna
Ballack 49'
Germany advanced to a tasty quarter-final clash with Portugal after ending Austrian hopes 1-0 in
Vienna tonight.
A rocket of a set piece from Michael Ballack was the only goal of the 90 minutes, but the Chelsea
man's strike was enough to see off the challenge of the co-hosts on their home patch.
Greetings Hillcrest followers. I'm checking in live today from the inaugural Food Wedge Cup from
gorgeous Loch Lloyd Country Club in southern Kansas City. The event marks our organization's
first-ever golf tournament, with proceeds going directly to our charitable arm, the Kansas City
Soccer Foundation.
A win is a win, right? The US went into the Guatemalan cauldron, never the most happy of hunting
grounds for US Soccer, and emerged with an important 1-0 victory courtesy of Bocanegra's noggin.
Time to break out the bubbly and wave the flag . . . or is it? Cue the talking points . . . ! * The
second note that appears in the text file I was using to keep track of my thoughts on the game is,
"
Yes, believe it or not, the fans are getting excited about the draft.
Lets be brutally honest, the fans opinions really mean nothing when it comes to player personnel
decisions. What am I really saying? Peter and Curt could care less what you and I think. Just send
the sales department your money for those tickets and Sing and Chant.
Looking at all the Wizards information out there yesterday, I came across this post over on Kansas City Soccer Review, with some of the news of the day for the Wizards. After looking at the first link, I had the same view as the author, now you can basically get a berm ticket for the price of a Cauldron ticket?
OnGoal has been the owner of our beloved Kansas City Wizards for two years now. There have been many wonderful things done since they took over ownership: new stadium plans, a temporary home, and they are showing some signs of support towards the group of fans who stand in the Cauldron.
Their stated goal is to grow the Cauldron through a grassroots campaign.
A couple of reminders for your Friday morning. One, we play AT HOME tomorrow. Crazy stuff, I know.
Two, we have a handful of free tickets left for Father's Day gifts over at
www.WizardsThankDads.blogspot.com. Simply post a comment there about your dad and why he deserves
one free ticket. All additional tickets will be available for purchase at the group rate, courtesy
of our friends at M&I Bank.
While I could write about the Samuel Eto'o transfer rumors (yawn) or the possibility of Luis
Aragones replacing Unai Emery as head coach (whatever ...), I thought this was infinitely more
interesting ...
According to Setanta Sports, Valencia's Mestalla is Europe's noisiest
stadium.
I cornered Kerry after practice on Thursday, I setup near the media cookies and he fell right into
my trap. I had to of course ask him about the huge banner the Cauldron did for his last regular
season game. That banner was awesome. I do not know who all worked on it but I know Jeff (Szazzy)
coordinated it.
That was not good. One bright spot was the KC fans traveling to Columbus to support their team.
Check out
Greetings ladies and gents. For those of you who haven't seen it, we did some filming yesterday for some upcoming videos of our guys re-enacting your favorites 1980's movie scenes. The Offside Rules had a spy at the event, and posted this. Check it out. Great stuff SF. Jimmy had your same Freddy Mercury comment during the shoot.
We're back home again this weekend. This time it's to take on Real Salt Lake. Salt Lake is coming
in on a 5 game winning streak, including their first road win of the season, a 1-0 result at Chivas
USA. Other then that win, though, Salt Lake is 0-5 on the road. So here's to hoping that Salt Lake
returns to their regular road form against us tomorrow night.
To everyone that came out yesterday, a huge THANK YOU. Though we didn't get a victory, the
atmosphere was outstanding. Chicago supporters forced The Cauldron to be as loud and boisterous as
ever. I sat outside the press box for most of the match and enjoyed the sights and sounds,
including this view currently up at kcwizards.
That was fun. What a great night. I do not know where to begin...The fans were able to honor 2 of
their favorite Wizards. Kerry Zavagnin's last regular season home game deserved a special display
and it was delivered. This is part of the display before the game. Many Cauldron members posing
with THE centerpice of Kerry's TIFO.
There's been a lot of talk lately in blogs and on message boards about the Cauldron and it's
location at Community America Ballpark. The arguments have gone from the pricing of the Cauldron
season ticket to the support of the section.
The price for one season ticket in the Cauldron for this coming season is $299 for a 15 game
regular season, and apparently 3 special game tickets.
The Cauldron has done some work this season to start a reaching out to the community. One of the things the section is doing, is collecting new and gently used soccer equipment for the Don Bosco Center in Kansas City. This will help to promote youth soccer in the area. The big date to get all of this in, is this coming Saturday, June 14th.
Ah yes, the old cliche that always appears after any long trip away from home. And after six
games, two months, one win, three losses, and two ties, the Wizards come back to play a home game
at Community America Ballpark (or as I affectionately call it, the CAB) this weekend against the
Crew.
The road trip hasn't been pretty.
Sammy Lee is backing the Kop to rise to the occasion and help turn Anfield into a fortress once
more during 2008-09.
Our assistant manager believes the fans will be in buoyant mood for the league clash against
Middlesbrough on Saturday as the Reds attempt to draw a line under last season's mixed home form.
The coming weeks are going to be very active for the Wizards and their supporters, the Cauldron, in
regards to their work in the community. The first event will take place this coming Saturday, as
the Cauldron will be participating in the Alzheimer's Memory Walk, in Corporate Woods in Overland
Park.
