We have reached the midway point of Serie A 2010/2011. Unofficially the winter break has always
been the midway point, as teams go on vacation and start planning their transfer strategy for the
January market. Officially the real midway point is after the 19th giornata, but the winter break
always feels like the real midway point.
As far as the strangest free kick I can recall goes, this is up there although it doesn't really
touch the Catania of a couple years ago. This one, from the Chinese second division, is easily the
most confusing, though.
Was this planned? Or is number 32 just the worst teammate known to man?

volubile.
Gazzetta dello Sport Juve Quaglia everything It finished 3-1 in Catania Quagliarella scores twice
and the referee doesn't see a valid third goal The ball crossed the line Pepe also scored Juve are
third, six points off the top Zanetti: 'It's absurd Sneijder isn't in the top three for the Ballon
d'Or' Sacchi: 'No one like Milan in the title race'.
Hernan Crespo scored twice to help
Parma put some breathing space between
themselves and the drop zone as they beat
Udinese 2-1.
Fiorentina
beat
Cagliari 1-0 to move up to 12th, with Adrian Mutu grabbing the only goal of
the game.
On Saturday evening, Napoli proved to the rest of Serie A that they are serious title contenders
after a hard fought 1-0 victory against Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. A brilliant headed goal
from Slovakian international Marik Hamšík after 26 minutes, was enough to give Walter Mazzarri's
men all three points and move the Vesuviani up to second place in the championship standings.
So, we are now 16 games into the season, and only one week away from the annual winter break.
Milan, no matter what they do vs. Roma this weekend, will be top of the table going into the winter
break for the first time in a very long time. However, they can't be too comfortable as the trio of
Juventus, Napoli, and Lazio are all breathing down their necks only 6 points away.
The eternal Hernan Crespo has struck again, ending Fiorentina's Coppa Italia run. While the
Coppa Italia isn't too interesting in the early stages, I really do enjoy it when it reaches the
round of eight, like it has now. Maybe it's due to the different mentality teams have when they
play knockout football, and it occasionally produces spectacular last-minute goals.
Last Wednesday, afterNapoli striker Edinson Cavani had scored a dramatic injury time winner against
Steaua Bucharest to send his team through to the knock-out stages of the Europa League, he stated
that his last gasp strike was " a miracle from God". Fast forward four days then to another
miracle, as the Uruguayan hit-man produced an incredible 20 metre strike to score the only goal.
And so, the first half of the Serie A season is gone. Wow did that go by fast. It feels like it
was Giornata 1 just yesterday. Now it's vacation time for the calciatori of Serie A, who go escape
to warm weather with their families for a little bit and then get right back to training for a
January 6th re-start.
Today, Italy and the Football world mourn Enzo Bearzot, the man who lead Italy to victory in the
1982 World Cup finals in Spain. Bearzot, 83, died in Milan after battling a long illness.
Bearzot, a defender, began his playing at Pro Gorizia in 1946 and went on to play for Inter,
Catania, and Torino before retiring as a player in 1964.
Enzo Bearzot, a legend of Italian coaching, died today. While I can't say much about what I
remember of him, I can say that he is certainly one of the greatest influences on Italian football.
Although many coaches focus on drills, tactics, and fitness, Bearzot also made sure he created a
tightly-knit group.
