It seems someone has made a PSP app. Who knew?
Philadelphia Union
Look for PSP's Chicago Fire vs. Philadelphia Union match preview later today.
While Danny Califf and Peter Nowak told reporters that they had put the "miscommunication" flap
behind them at a meeting earlier in the week, Nowak indicated at Wednesday's press conference that
Califf's status for Saturday's game in Chicago was still uncertain.

Editor's note: At the end of the 2010 season, we posted a series of season reviews of every
Philadelphia Union player. Over the next several weeks PSP continues with a review of the 2011
season.
The Freddy Adu redemption narrative began this year the same way such stories typically begin:
At rock bottom.
The MLS incarnation of the Seattle Sounders is a very young franchise with only three seasons
under its belt. That combined with the relative lack of player movement in the single-entity MLS
means that there really aren't that many ex-Sounders. But I thought it'd be nice to take a look
back at some Sounders of yore and see what they're up to now.

Happy New Year from all of us at the Philly Soccer Page. The Union's first kick is only 70 days
away.

Clausura 2012.
Esqueda, Daniel Guzmán Miranda y Carlos Ruiz.
Sebastien Le Toux and Kyle Nakazawa were seen as the two major free kick takers on the
Philadelphia Union through the team's first two seasons of existence.
For Le Toux it was because of his massive number of free kicks, coupled with a perceived high
failure rate on them. Nakazawa's status as a free kick taker came from a mystique that he developed
among the Union's fan base from great technique.

With the signing of Lionard Pajoy, the Union may just be nearing the end of their offseason
transactions (at least for outfield players). In a set of three installments, PSP's Eli
Pearlman-Storch outlines the most likely formations for the Union in 2012 and how the roster, as
currently composed, is suited to play in each.
In which we address the pre-pubescent new roster, and try to see things from where our beleaguered
coach stands.

Following last week's discussion of the merits of the 4-3-3, PSP's Eli Pearlman-Storch
outlines the traditional 4–4–2 as it would work for the Union in 2012 in the second of a
three-part series.
With the continuing turnover in the roster, the 2012 Philadelphia Union must find consistency on
the pitch in order to prove that last year's playoff appearance was no fluke.
It's that time of year again, Union fans. As of now, our controversial roster is pretty much
what it's gonna be. Following an offseason of unusual turnover, heart-rending surprises,
vicious debate, and a deluge of tweets fit for no man's daughters, we've got ourselves a team.
For better or worse, Union 3.
Ah, awards season. The Golden Globes! The Grammys! The Oscars! The Unis!
Yes, it's the Unis. So don your powder blue tuxes while I, Mr. Tim Carr, the host and award
presenter, do a cheesy lounge musical medley of "I'm looking over a four leaf clover," "Union Man,"
and "Doop," then hand out arguably the most important trophies on Earth: the Unis.

Roster turnover. Throughout the Union's brief two year life in MLS, it has been one of the
unavoidable topics surrounding the team. Each season has seen a drastic overhaul of the lineup and
this year is no different. With the opening kickoff in Portland only days away, PSP takes a moment
to check in with all the former Union players to see where they've landed for the 2012 season.
We've heard arguments from all sides about who should take the pitch at first whistle, come Monday
night. Now we'd like to know what you think. Who should make up the starting XI at First Kick?
What to go with? A 4-4-2? 4-3-3? 4-3-2-1? The great minds of the blogosphere have already
weighed in, complete with fancy charts: Now we want your opinion.

It is tough to provide much meaningful information about the match history of the Philadelphia
Union against the Portland Timbers considering that the teams have only played one another twice.
From a Union perspective, it becomes harder still when you consider that five of the starters in
either of those two games (Mondragon, Le Toux, Mapp, Ruiz, Paunovic) are no longer with the
club.
The chances of a red card at PPL Park on Saturday dropped drastically after news broke that Eric
Hassli did not make the traveling roster of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Hassli recently suffered an ankle injury that left him questionable leading up to Saturday, but
the French striker has now be listed as officially out, according to both 1040 Team Radio and Marc
Weber.
The blind squirrels have found their nut. By upholding the high defensive standards that have
come to be their most reliable asset, the Union was able to sneak away from PPL Park with 3 points
by way of a single penalty kick. While it's fantastic to see the that the Union defense is
decidedly back on track, and the Union's movement and possession were much improved, and it's just
plum wonderful to put a "W".

It took Danny Mwanga eight minutes to do what Lionard Pajoy hasn't done in 367: Create a
goal.
If that one play isn't a good enough reason of why Mwanga needs to replace Pajoy in Philadelphia
Union's starting lineup, here are a few more.
- Only one team in Major League Soccer has a worse goals-per-game rate than the Union's 0.
