After a rather quiet offseason in terms of player moves, the New York Red Bulls are reportedly
close to making a big splash in the transfer market.
According to reports out of the Netherlands, the club has a two-year offer on the table to Ajax
midfielder and Finland international Teemu Tainio (pictured above, left), who has fallen out of
favor at the club and can be had on a free transfer.
With the Philadelphia Union. Interesting choice of forward by Coach Peter Nowak, not exactly
renowned as the tolerant type especially given that Ruiz has played for three different clubs in
three years.
How he will work with the party-loving Carlos Ruiz, seen at right playing for Greek side Aris
Salonika last September against Athletico Madrid, who used to drive former Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid
nuts when he played here, remains to be seen.
The Philadelphia Union's Guatemalan international striker Carlos Ruiz has a base salary of
$306,670, according to a report put out by ESPN.
The ESPN report lists the "best-paid athletes from 182 countries." Each monetary value listed is
devoid of any other types of compensation other than the base salary.

Carlos Ruiz netted the lone goal of the game in the 77th minute as the Philadelphia Union
defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC by a score of 1-0. It was his first goal in Major League Soccer
since July 19, 2008, when he was in his second stint with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Colorado Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan has been suspended 10 games and fined $5,000 for his

The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee added nine games and $4,750 onto the automatic
punishment for receiving a red card by determining that "Mullan's challenge was reckless,
egregious, and showed utter disregard for the safety of his opponent," according to a statement
released by the league.

There are certain basic adages that should be considered general knowledge...
Don't mess with success.
Unfortunately, Peter Nowak doesn't know that one.

Nope. Not that one either.

Last season, the Philadelphia Union managed a measly 35 goals, good for 5th-to-last in the
league.
For the entire 2010 MLS season, Philadelphia Union coach Peter Nowak used a formation that is
widely referred to as a 4-2-2-2. The normal back four was utilized along with two forwards; in the
midfield, two players would sit back and focus more on breaking up the opponent's possession while
the other two midfielders would support the two forwards.

The Philly Soccer Page » Match Report: Dallas 2 – 0 Philadelphia
Peter Nowak (back from his jaunt to Poland) made multiple changes to the Philadelphia line-up for
their trip to Dallas. For the first time this season, we saw Sebastien Le Toux partner Danny Mwanga
up top with Carlos Ruiz dropped to the bench.
So DC lost to Ajax in front of 10,000 people. The Dutch side dominated for most of the game
despite being without Maarten Stekelenburg and Christian Eriksen, and having started with Gregory
van der Wiel, Jan Vertgonhen and Siem de Jong on the bench. DC went down 1-0 in the tenth minute,
then leveled the score in the 58th with a goal from Blake Brettschneider, only to be finished off
by Vurnon Anita's goal in the 87th minute.
We're finally putting the closing number on week 10. A few changes here and there in this week's
rankings. First up is LA taking over the top spot again. With RSL's ho-hum of a draw down in Dallas
it felt like a proper time to place LA back on top.
The middle got mixed up again here with a couple results this week.

Fans were treated to two of the better goals of the Major League Soccer season on Saturday
night, when Carlos Ruiz and Bobby Convey each found the net in impressive fashion.
Ruiz admitted that his left-footed volley from distance was a bit fortuitous, and perhaps
Chicago keeper Jon Conway could've done better, but the stunning strike was perfectly hit and gave
the Union three points.

The Sounders are traveling north of the border this weekend to take on Toronto FC. I'm not going

A late equalizer from striker Carlos Ruiz game the Philadelphia Union a well-earned road point

Dwayne De Rosario, acquired earlier in the week by D.C., was inserted directly into the lineup
