One Fan's Reaction to Watching U.S.-Honduras Eighties-Style
I watch most U.S. national team games cloistered in my own soccer nerdom, hunched over a
computer or slouched at a friend's house where I can bitch freely about the team's dry ideas and
dire first touch. This is how a lot of us watch games.

The US is going to another World Cup. (Getty Images)
Editor's Note: Geoff Reid appears at WVHooligan each week. Today he is back to recap the
recent World Cup clinching match for the US against Honduras. Feel free to leave Geoff your
thoughts below.
It's been a few days since the US national team secured qualification for South Africa next
summer so now would be a good time to recap the latest events that took place in San Pedro Sulsa on
Saturday night.

Well, the Yanks have officially booked their tickets to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after
beating Honduras in a 3-2 thriller. I missed the game because (a) I was at a wedding, and (b) it
wasn't on TV anyway. So, let me say up front that I still feel like I can't really give you any
real insight into the outcome.

So I woke up Sunday morning after this weird dream. Something about the U.S. national team beating
Honduras 3-2 mixed with me being chased by Carlo Costly and Carlos Pavon in something straight out
of the Michael Jackson 'Thriller' video. Odd. So odd I decided it was worth breaking my 10-month
old self-imposed ban from Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

With a 3-2 victory over Honduras in San Pedro Sula, the US National Team secured its spot in the
2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. This is the sixth straight World Cup qualification for the
US, following a 40 year absence from the biggest sporting event in the world.
While the first half in Honduras remained scoreless, Julio De Leon put Honduras on the board in
the 47th minute.

Last night down in Honduras, the US qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with a 3-2 win
over Honduras. After a scoreless first half the US fell behind in the 47th minute via a Julio Leon
free kick. The US came back with 3 unanswered goals, two by forward Conor Casey, who got a surprise
start ahead of Jozy Altidore.

The U.S. Men's National team scored three unanswered goals then held on for dear life to eke out
a 3-2 win at San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Saturday night and qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Surprise
starter Conor Casey scored twice his first goals in a national team shirt, and when Landon

Big Story
There was something for pretty much everyone yesterday, an all-day footballing extravaganza that
began with Germany overcoming her many doubters by beating Hiddink's tactically astute Russia in
the Luzhniki Stadium, and ended with the United States overcoming a lethargic start and a
forty-seventh minute goal by beating Honduras 3-2 in front of a hostile crowd of forty thousand at
the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

This was absolutely a nerve racking second half for the USA and all of us supporters. Who
would've thought going down a goal in the 46th minute that the USA would gather their thoughts very
quickly and go out on a three goal rampage and especially from Conor Casey by not scoring a goal,
but two in a row.

The CONCACAF region is still very close and all six remaining teams were in action on Saturday,
October 10, 2009. The United States could clinch a spot with a win while Honduras and Costa Rica
are in 3rd and 4th. Mexico will all but clinch a spot with a win as they have a better goal
differential than Honduras and Costa Rica.

Typical boring CONCACAF. Mexico and US qualify with room to spare, Central American teams fight for
the other spots, and some baseball country along to make it a Hex instead of a Pent. We all saw
this coming last year. Ho hum.
So, yeah, that happened.
What more is there to say about Landon Donovan?

Honduras 2 U.S. 3
Game story.
Former Galaxy striker Carlos Pavon proved once again why he failed so abysmally in MLS, missing
a crucial penalty in the 87th minute for Honduras that sealed the U.S. win. And then he missed
another sitter two minutes later.
Still, it looked to me a legitimate Honduras goal was called offside.

Honduras is a free republic in Central America. Hondurans are a crafty, productive people with a
rich history. The Mayans first settled in the region, Chris Columbus (the explorer, not the
director) set foot on its shores, and Spain controlled the country for much of its existence. The
tiny nation also once fought a "Football War" with El Salvador.

STARTERSUgh - The USA U20 team laid another egg at the World Cup. Losing 3-0 to South Korea. And again they
looked quite inept on the green. Strange team. Horrible in game 1, very good in game 2, horrible in
game 3.

QUESTION ON MY MIND1-888-388-2650 - This is the phone number of the dopes trying to sell the Honduras v USA game via
closed circuit in the USA. Call them and tell them that they are dopes. So far they have signed up
a whopping 5 places in the entire country to carry the game.

Rounds 7 and 8 of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers were the rounds that re-established the known order
of CONCACAF national teams. The US & Mexico came into these rounds in need of 6 points to overtake
Honduras & Costa Rica in the standings. The Stars & Stripes defeated El Salvador 2-1 at home in
Utah with Jozy Altidore scoring the game winner in 1st half injury time.

In the North and Central American hexagonal, the top four teams appear to be decided - the question
now is which three will gain the automatic qualification places?
The group table has an unfamiliar look with Honduras in top spot, level on thirteen points with the
United States.

You take a 3-0 lead into the second leg and you should be okay, right? Not if Real Espana HULKS UP
and wins 6-0. Yes, 6-0. Carlos Pavon wreaked havoc all over the field, scoring 3 and having a hand
in 2 more.
At least the Red Bulls didn't lose 6-0...

The Gold Cup semi-finals are almost on us. The US gets to meet Honduras, one of their most
familiar opponents in recent times. This is their third meeting in less than two months so the
Hondurans could be pardoned if they believe familiarity breeds contempt but in fact, this team
wears an unfamiliar look.

The USA meet Honduras in their first big test in the Concacaf Gold Cup at RFK Stadium in front
of a pro Honduran crowd.
Their country has been in the news lately with a military coup toppling incumbent president
Manuel Zelaya and installing Roberto Micheletti, a development that President Obama condemned and
the OAS threatening to sanction Honduras.

Details for the Los Angeles Galaxy's 2008 post-season tour are starting to emerge. Despite the fact
that Los Angeles hasn't won a match in nearly three months, are currently outside the final MLS
playoff spot and have a lot of work to do if they are to make the postseason, club officials are
busy scheduling exhibition games around the world for this coming off-season.
