A very bad year for the youth national teams

Pasión Albiceleste 17 November @ 11:11 AM EST

For many years Carlos Bilardo campaigned for his players from the 1986 World Cup to be brought as managers to all levels of the national team. These players who eventually became managers are refered to by the Argentine media as the "86 Generation".

Players like Jorge Luis Burruchaga, Hector Enrique, Sergio Batista, Jose Luis Brown, Nery Pumpido, Oscar Garre, Julio Olarticochea.

A pointless ban: Maradona gets off lightly

Soccerblog 15 November @ 01:22 PM EST

For his potty mouthed outburst following Argentina's win over Uruguay. (translation)

Here is an even more graphic video.

Till three weeks ago, Maradona remained unrepentant.

"I was getting it off my chest, and I don't regret it," Maradona said. "I gave my mother a kiss on the forehead and told her: 'If I was wrong I ask your forgiveness, but nobody else'.

Maradona – Potty Mouthed Conspiracy Theorist

WorldCupBlog 24 October @ 10:42 AM EST

There was a time when the names Diego Armando Maradona, Carlos Bilardo and the Argentine National team were synonymous with success. The magical run to the 1986 World Cup made both men house hold names in the sport, and heroes back home.

Boy, does that seem like a life time ago.

  • So The Dona has an ongoing fued with Carlos Bilardo as we all know but it looks like the matter has escalated to beyond childish. Yes, he is now accusing Bilardo of "trying to overthrow Argentinean Football President, Julio Grondona." Grandpa, you need to sit down.

  • So Argentina qualified for the World Cup and Tevez looks confused. Seriously, though, why does The Dona look like he's being pushed around? How dare you! We can almost imagine the amused look on everyone's faces at the press conference after hearing this : "Our victory is going to all Argentineans, except the journalists.

Bolatti saves Diego's bacon

Soccerphile World Cup Blog 14 October @ 08:04 PM EST
The impossible shock didn't happen in the end as Argentina won 1-0 in Montevideo to bag the last South American place in South Africa and send Uruguay into a two-legged play-off with Costa Rica.
Chile's 1-0 win over Ecuador meant neither of tonight's teams in the Centenario would go home empty-handed. Click to continue reading...

Diego does it in the end

No Short Corners 14 October @ 07:06 PM EST
No shock after all as Argentina made it to the Finals after downing Uruguay 1-0 in Montivideo thanks to an 84th minute goal from Mario Balotti. Emotional scenes followed the final whistle as Diego Maradona and old Carlos Bilardo hugged each other in ecstatic relief. The albiceleste's task had been made easier by Chile eliminating Ecuador, ensuring at least a play-off spot, Uruguay's consolation. Click to continue reading...

The Dona To Quit After Two Games?

Futbolita 07 October @ 02:23 AM EST

So The Dona and gang have a mission to qualify for the World Cup. And obviously a place in South Africa is muy importante! As you can see, he probably cracked a ball joke in the photo above and Kind Messiah decided that it would've only been polite if he laughed along.

The Dona VS Carlos Bilardo

Futbolita 29 September @ 01:02 AM EST

So the Albicelestes are facing another crisis and this time, it involves a rift between The Dona and the squad's general manager and former midfielder, Carlos Bilardo. Can't anybody get along anymore?!

Anyway, it's common knowledge that the coach didn't call up any Europe-based players for Argentina's friendly against Ghana tomorrow but now, it seems that The Dona has told Bilardo to "stay out of his decisions" because he "prefers a distance".

Pasión Albiceleste 17 September @ 08:39 PM EST

So while the national team manager is on vacation in Italy doing whatever it is that he is doing, Carlos Bilardo is taking charge of the call up list and in reality, the national team, for the upcoming friendly against Ghana.

The players called up will be from the domestic league only.

Bilardo will assume a larger role in player selection

Soccerblog 13 September @ 04:14 PM EST

Diego Maradona's power is being taken away. Carlos Bilardo is being asked to step in and help with player selection.

Julio Grondona had requested Maradona to avail of Bilardo's advise after the Bolivia drubbing but the manager who won Argentina the 1986 World Cup and helped catapult Maradona to the world stage has been marginalized with little input in the selection.

Grondona demanding changes

Pasión Albiceleste 13 September @ 08:55 AM EST

According to a published report out of Buenos Aires, because of Maradona's poor performance as manager and the national team's recent losses and current place in the WC Qualifying standings, Julio Grondona is stepping in and imposing a list of conditions to Maradona.

Apparently, Grondona will no longer go along with everything that Maradona requests and does as national team manager.

A quiet foreboding fills Argentina

Soccerblog 06 September @ 10:32 AM EST

Colombia did Argentina a good turn yesterday with their 2-0 win over Ecuador which meant that they still retained fourth spot even as they crashed to defeat against Brazil at the Grand Arroyito.

This maybe the way to go to SA, with a little help from other teams. Because the public seems to be quietly giving up on the team as over 65% of them in a survey believe that they will not make it to the World Cup.

Liverpool 1st, Chelsea 2nd and United 3rd

Republik Of Mancunia 10 August @ 04:20 AM EST

This time last year The Guardian writers predicted that after winning the Premiership and European Cup double, Manchester United would give up their title to Chelsea. The reasons were obvious, apparently, but I disagreed with every single one.

First they argued that if Chelsea came within a few points of us that season, with a World Cup winning manager in charge they were certain to improve.

Estudiantes win the 2009 Copa Libertadores

Soccerblog 15 July @ 09:54 PM EST

Their first Libertadores title in 39 years. It was a come from behind win as Henrique lashed a shot that took a deflection of a Estudiantes defender and beat Andujar to put Cruzeiro up by a goal in the 52' minute.

But Juan Sebastian Veron in one of his magical moments laid a perfect outlet to Rodrigo Brana who caught up to the ball running onto his right.

2009 Copa Libertadores Final: Will Cruzeiro steal one over Estudiantes?

Soccerblog 08 July @ 08:32 PM EST

Its an Argentina vs Brazil final. What more can you do to stir passion?

However as Tim Vickery points out, the Copa Libertadores is looked down by many in Brazil even as the clubs fight for the final four spots in the national championships because similar to the European Championships, entry into the Copa yields big financial payoffs and a potential launching pad for players interested in an international career.

The Manager Tag Overrated?

Mad About Fútbol 07 July @ 09:46 PM EST
What seems to be en vogue in Argentina is the newest position of manager. There is no doubt in my mind that the clubs that have been fed this line of horsecrap have been the ones that have not been successful.
Let's start with the national team. Carlos Bilardo was handed the keys as manager under Diego Maradona. Click to continue reading...

Grondona wants a Riquelme return

Soccerblog 25 June @ 12:17 AM EST

The faultlines between Julio Grondona and Diego Maradona could deepen if these two cult of personalities square off on the potential inclusion of Juan Roman Riquelme to the national team.

Like Steve McLaren call up of David Beckham in England's faltering Euro 2008 campaign, Riquelme is on Grondona's lips because the Albiceleste are approaching a crisis point under Maradona in their World Cup quest.
