How many teams can miss that many first choice players and eke out a fairly comfortable win in
the Champions League? I think that is the big question and one that many might have missed when
entangled in observations pertaining to Arsenal's defence, which undoubtedly needs a lot more
work.
As expected, Wenger rested a number of key players.
After surviving the shock of falling a goal behind to their League Two opponents, struggling
Arsenalcame back to beat Shrewsbury Town 3-1 and comfortably progress into the fourth round of
the Carling Cup at the Emirates Stadium.
The visitors stunned the Emirates crowd after 16 minutes when James Collins's bullet header beat
Lukasz Fabianski, and a major upset looked to be possible.

Well we got back on track a little bit today, battling back from a one goal deficit to defeat
Shrewsbury Town 3-1. Some of the same worries are still there, of course, but at least we can enjoy
ourselves for now. Before getting into the recap, I want to apologize to the readers for a couple
of things.
Strong start. Eased off. Conceded a sloppy goal and some chances. Regrouped. Equalized. Pushed
on and closed the game out by adding a couple more. Entertaining. Encouraging. Much needed.
It was a youthful line-up and an even younger bench. Le Boss also started with a fluid 4-4-2
giving Park and Chamakh having a great deal of freedom to move.

Robin van Persie has tipped Arsenal youngster Ryo Miyaichi to achieve greatness at the club
given the Japanese starlet's work ethic and positive attitude towards the game.
Van Persie watched from the sidelines as Miyaichi and the rest of Arsenal's Carling Cup squad
defeated Shrewsbury Town 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium but even before the kick-off, he only had good
things to say about his prodigal teammate.
Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates believes that he has entered into an extremely exciting
stage in his career after accepting the challenge to join Kenny Dalglish's side over the
summer.
Coates' arrival at Anfield was welcomed with open arms given that the club desperately needed
defensive depth.

Saturday 24th
Manchester City vs Everton from the Etihad Stadium, Manchester
City's fast start to this season has cooled a little with Roberto Mancini's men dropping two points
away at Fulham last weekend, and it was especially disappointing being 2-0 up and letting a two
goal lead slip.
This will be a battle between teams placed 17th and 19th with the two leakiest defences in the
League. Bolton have shipped just one less goal than Arsenal's 14. Neither team is on a particularly
good run either and both have a Cup result to blame, at least partially. Arsenal have been
unrecognizable since the Carling Cup loss while Bolton haven't been able to recover from the 5-0
hammering they got from Stoke in the FA Cup semi-final.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos have struck early for Arsenal to give the home side a
2-1 advantage over the visiting Olympiakos during the first half at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners left skipper Robin van Persie and key playmaker Aaron Ramsey on the bench in
anticipation of Sunday's cracking North London derby but that did not prevent them from dominating
in the early stages of their Group F match.
Fans finally voting with their feet.. Silent Stan nowhere to be seen.. Just what is
going on at Arsenal?
Arsenal fans are voting with their feet for the first time during Arsene Wenger's 15-year reign.
Tickets for a Premier League match are on general sale for the Bolton game on Saturday week.
When it was first announced, not many would have thought an Arsenal V Shrewsbury tie in the
third round of the Carling Cup will take on such significance. I shudder at the thought of
elimination but given the recent form, and with the team finding new ways of gifting goals, it's
not too hard to imagine.
Hatem Ben Arfa will return to the Newcastle side on Tuesday night at Nottingham Forest in the
Carling Cup, and that's terrific news for Newcastle fans. Ben Arfa - after scoring phenomenal
winner at Everton And it seems that in training Ben Arfa has been very impressive indeed, and doing
things other players simply cannot [.
Lost amid all the debates and media coverage about the respective merits of David De Gea and
Anders Lindegaard, Tomasz Kuszczak silently fades into oblivion and obscurity, left out in the cold
by Alex Ferguson and stranded at Old Trafford with his only football coming on the Carrington
training ground and in meaningless reserve matches.
Another chance for Coquelin to show his stuff, albeit in a less pressure match that his last
away trip
Carling Cup returns to action tonight. I have to admit, this is a competition which I do enjoy
and look forward to each season. Perhaps the biggest reason is how Arsene Wenger has chose to use
this competition.

How am I supposed to avoid a The Taming of the Shrew reference? Because I hate sports puns,
that's how.
Regardless of how Billy Shakespeare felt about Arsenal's chances tomorrow, and despite Rich's
vehement defence of the Shrews' special blend of defiant and energetic football, I would have to
say that I agree with Homey's preview: we shouldn't misunderestimate them, but this should be a
clear win.
Stoke away in the Carling Cup third round it is. Only two days after our last match. That is
ridiculous isn't it?! Trip to Greece on Thursday, Cheeky win over Liverpool on Sunday, off to Stoke
on the Tuesday. It's the same for Stoke, they've had a Thursday, Sunday, Tuesday fiasco going on as
well. So are we expecting a second sting side from both teams with all 22 players content not to
get hurt, play out a 0-0 bore draw whilst at the same time failing to be good enough to make a
stake for a first team start?

After a disappointing result against Blackburn at the weekend, the hope is that the Carling Cup
will offer a welcome distraction from the travails of the Premier League. Certainly it will be a
youthful side put out by Arsenal, but there are a few fringe players in need of game time that will
offer experience.
After initially attributing Arsenal's shocking 4-3 defeat at Blackburn to fatigue and a stroke
of misfortune, Arsene Wenger has finally broken his silence on what he thinks has led to the club's
worst start in 58 years.
The Gunners have managed only four points from 15 in their opening five fixtures and their
latest setback at Ewood Park caused many to wonder precisely what it is that continues to cause
issues at the Emirates Stadium despite a host of major signings bolstering the squad at the
transfer deadline day.

A review of Barclays Premier League sides in Carling Cup third round action.
Putting the misery that was the weekend in the rear view, Chelsea begin their League Cup
campaign with a home fixture against West London neighbors Fulham. Those sodding neighbors. More
after the jump:
Child, please?
On paper, this is simply a Third Round League Cup fixture against a quality opponent that can
certainly cause the Blues trouble.

Stuart Holden's road to recovery is officially complete.
Having been sidelined since March with a devastating knee injury, Holden played in his first
official match of the season for Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday. The U.S. men's national team
midfielder started and went the distance in Bolton's 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa in the third
round of the Carling Cup, a promising return for a player looking to get back to the form that had
many considering him one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

Match highlights from yesterday evening's nailbiting 3-4 thriller against Nottingham Forest in the

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was clearly happy after the Gunners reached the fourth round of the
Carling Cup after a tricky game against Shrewsbury Town, on Tuesday. Speaking after the game, the
Frenchman explained that the ...
We won against Shrewsbury Town! Woooooo...*cough* *cough* erm, yeah. A 3-1 huff-puff win against
League Two opposition is hardly the tonic you'd want after the League run Arsenal are having at the
moment, but I'd prefer to concentrate on the ‘win' part of things for now.

Team Selection.
Having missed the opportunity to ensnare London or 26may to write a match report I'm shamelessly
using their comments from after the game and adding a few of my own.
Like many I was looking forward to seeing Oxlade-Chamberlain, Park and Ryo in addition to other
well-known young guns show off their silky skills.
