Only two days after defeating Chelsea in the Premier League Arsenal travel to Ewood Park to face
Blackburn in the Carling Cup quarterfinals.
The team is likely to be hugely different from the near-full-strength squad that beat the blues to
keep Arsenal on top of the Premier League, as Arsene Wenger always tries to field his kids during
cup ties.
Arsene Wenger will continue to blood his youngsters in the Carling Cup, even against the tough
opposition of Blackburn. The Arsenal coach feels that playing a young squad will not only increase
the experience of Arsenal's fringe players, but also allow the Gunners' senior squad a chance to
rest during period congested with fixtures.
A quick chance for revenge following our recent 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane, with Pascal
Chimbonda's controversial goal proving the difference. City are looking for there 10th straight
home win.
Spurs had a good win at Pompey on Saturday and will certainly be a different proposition from the
confidence drained side of just a couple of weeks ago.
We were down to the final eight teams in the Carling Cup; the "Elite" or "Great" eight if you're a
fan of college basketball and the NCAA Tournament, the boring last eight if you're not, but six
days ago, Everton sent West Ham out of the competition with a 2-1 victory at Upton Park. Three more
quarterfinals remain to be played with two of them taking place today and the other to kickoff
tomorrow.
Ten-man Arsenal defeated Blackburn 3-2 in extra time, after a tense 120 minutes at Ewood Park. The
Gunners gained an early lead thanks to Abou Diaby and Eduardo, but Blackburn came back through a
Roque Santa Cruz brace. Neves Denilson was sent off during second half stoppage time, but Arsenal's
youngsters showed great character as Eduardo bagged his second during the first half of extra time
to propel the Gunners to victory after a titanic clash.
What are ya gonna do? When three players of the opposition are worth more than your whole side in
transfer fees, a 2-0 loss with only ten men on the pitch has to be considered a valiant effort. I
didn't know Chelsea needed an ego boost that bad, but I guess I was wrong.
All our boys need to be commended for their performances.
Yesterday, Arsenal beat Blackburn 3-2 to qualify for the semi-finals of the Carling Cup. With an
average age of 20, Arsenal were able to score a last minute stoppage time goal to overcome a
physical Blackburn side. Arsenal, however, were limited to 10 men after Denilson was red-carded for
a somewhat limited tackle, and were [.

Outside of a moment of sheer idiocy from Peter Crouch and an unfortunate deflection off Carragher,
I really can't complain.
...According to Rafa Benitez that is. Despite losing two Premier League games on the trot, a
debilitating loss to Reading and a beating against the run of play to Man Utd - Rafa Benitez
remains positive about his side's Carling Cup game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tonight.
While simultaneously conceding that Chelsea are [.
The quarter-final curse that has afflicted both the club and Sven over the past few seasons failed
to be exorcised last night in what at the time was one of the more frustrating evenings of
following City, and on reflection one of the biggest opportunities wasted.
To plat at home against a side not in fantastic form, reduced to ten men after just twenty minutes
on our home ground where we had won every game so far this season is an opportunity that doesn't
present itself too often, and clearly we blew it.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had a pop at ref Martin Atkinson after his team's 2-0 Carling Cup
quarter final loss to Chelsea for not penalizing Mikel John Obi for the two fouls he committed
before Crouch did his wild lunge - and a wild lunge from a man as lanky as Peter Crouch [...]
West Ham United are safe from relegation this season and that's something when you consider in the
summer they lost their Messiah Carlos Tevez who almost single handedly rescued the West Ham ship
after it had appeared to be sinking for much of the season. The Hammers lie 10th in the table with
22 points [.

Game: Blackburn Rovers v Arsenal Venue: Ewood Park Competition: Carling Cup Quarterfinal Date:

anything to go by, this game will have plenty of kicks, scrapes and cards, and the result will be a
close affair.
The Reserves had a friendly with Tottenham yesterday, that they won 2-1 behind goals from David
Martin and Craig Lindfield. More importantly, any player featured in that match will probably not
get the call at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. That means sadly there'll be no chance of getting to see
Emiliano Insua, Jay Spearing, Ray Putterill, or Krisztián Németh, among others, but neither Nabil
El Zhar, Jack Hobbs, nor Sebastián Leto played, so they may feature.

This'll be the third time Liverpool's faced Chelsea in domestic cup competition since Benitez took
over. Liverpool won 2-1 in both last year's Community Shield and the 05/06 FA Cup semi-final, while
Chelsea won 3-2 in the 04/05 Carling Cup final.
Arsenal will face North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the semifinals of the Carling Cup for
the second season running. The other semifinal will be a tough contest between Everton and
Chelsea.
Arsenal made it through to the semifinals after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers,
while Tottenham barely had to fight to defeat Manchester City, despite playing 70 minutes with 10
men after the sending off of Didier Zokora.
Alhassan "Al" Bangura - the Watford midfielder and Sierra Leone native - was granted the
opportunity to qualify for a work permit, which effectively has kept him from being sent back to
Sierra Leone for the time being. If it was a 'regular' work permit hearing, Bangura would still be
packing his bags, but apparently the [.
I've decided to revamp my ratings system for a number of reasons. Before I was rating players
individually, as in how well they played compared to how well I've seen them play. The problem with
that is I feel that it doesn't really show the proper value of a player's performance in relation
to the whole side.
A nail-biting conclusion to cap off a fine effort by our young stars. The Carling Cup is once
again the showcase for Arsenal's young talent, and with an average age of 20, Arsenal beat
Blackburn's normal squad. Diaby opened up scoring in the sixth minute with a deft volley and
Eduardo solidified Arsenal's lead only ten minutes later.
(Summary is not available.)
If you think you've seen it before, indeed you have. For the second year in a row, Tottenham and
Arsenal face off in the Carling Cup semifinals, with the winner going up against Chelsea or Everton
in February's final at Wembley. The first leg will be contested at the Emirates Stadium on January

Spurs captain Robbie Keane will be suspended for both upcoming games against Manchester
City, it was confirmed on Tuesday.
The Irish striker was sent off against Birmingham City on
Sunday, and with his two-footed challenge earning him a straight red card he was handed an
immediate three-match ban.
You have to say it but they were two great results for Arsenal and Tottenham last night. To go to
Manchester City and get the win will be a great boost for Tottenham. While Blackburn is always a
nightmare place to get a result so Arsene Wenger will be more than pleased with the 3-2 win.
I watched a bit of the Tottenham game and was impressed with some of the football from Spurs.
Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda is up for some good old fashioned revenge after his side won
2-0 away to Man City in the Carling Cup quarter final, which set up the possibility of one North
London semi final and the other one being a Liverpool-Everton Merseyside tussle. Arsenal and Spurs
played in last season's [.
Three teams that seem to care about the League Cup will be joined by ever defiant Arsenal, who got
past Blackburn with only youngsters and with ten men in extra time on Tuesday. Chelsea knocked off
Liverpool 2-0 today while...
Meh.
Although I will totally watch if the final turns out to be another bitchslapping contest between
Arsenal and Chelsea.
The Carling Cup semifinal draw was made last night after Chelsea's 2-0 win over Liverpool at
Stamford Bridge.
The semifinal round will be contested over two legs, with the team that scores the most goals over
both games advancing to the final. The exact dates have yet to be determined but the matches will
be played during the weeks of January 7 and 21.
Chelsea won this Carling Cup quarter-final within five minutes around the hour mark. The latest
Chelsea deflected goal to break Liverpool hearts was bounced in off Jamie Carraghers leg, and then
Peter Crouch showed how long legs can help you fly through the air with an acrobatic albeit
dangerous lunge on Mikel.
The draw for the semi finals of the Carling Cup was made last night with one particularly juicy
draw - Arsenal will play Tottenham in one of the semis thus giving Spurs the chance to avenge last
year's loss against their fierce North London rivals. In the other semi-final, Chelsea will play
Everton: 1st Leg [.
Carling Cup holders Chelsea will be looking to advance to a second consecutive final and third in
four years when they take on Everton in the Carling Cup semifinals next month. Chelsea took home
the cup in 2005 and 2007 under Jose Mourinho, and they're looking to get Avram Grant his first
trophy as [.
