As the Senate gets ready to vote on a new bill to stave off economic disaster, and Sarah prepares
(feverishly) to debate, and George Will joins the ranks of those who see her as unqualified to
serve ... and some (unfortunately) find themselves feeling sorry for the lipsticked pitbull ... my
thoughts turn (feverishly) to [.
Call it change. Call it luck. Call it redemption. Call it bravery. Call it what you will - it's
gold and it's real and it stays! The USWNT defeated Brazil 1-0 yesterday in extra time after
putting on a gritty performance on the pitch on a wet, humid, Beijing night.

I opened up MSNBC this morning and saw the news that Obama has picked Biden. Probably a smart move
... experience and gravitas and whiteness and all. I was kinda hoping for something more
interesting - but would rather win. So Biden seems good. Biden I can live with. (But wouldn't

The news wires are now full of player profiles, match reports, you name it, as the US women's
soccer team gears up for its gold medal match versus Brazil on Thursday morning. This team is
living up to the Nike Women's World Cup hype of several months ago ... the greatest team you've

The USWNT defeated Norway 4-0 yesterday in Fredrikstad, and Abby Wambach scored her 99th career
goal! Next up is Sweden on July 5th. Interestingly, the US had not defeated Norway in Norway before
- losing and tying their two previous matches there. The Norwegians must love it that the USWNT's
first win [.
Yesterday the USWNT beat Sweden 1-0 at Norrvalla Stadium in Skelleftea, Sweden. Carli Lloyd scored
what turned out to be the game-winner off a corner that she took, giving a short kick to Lindsay
Tarplay. Lindsay returned the ball to Carli, who took it into the box past at least three defenders
before [.
In a game featuring lots of possession, lots of tough tackles, and lots to build on, the USWNT
prevailed over Brazil, again by a 1-0 score. Unfortunately, they lost stalwart forward Abby Wambach
who went down after a first half collision and, as it turns out, broke two bones in her leg. She's

... but first, congratulations to Usain Bolt on his phenomenal victory in the 200! He is just
amazing to watch ... how beautifully effortless and strong. Can't wait to see it tonight! On the
USWNT front, we've got Lindsey Dolich with her pre-game report and Jeff Carlisle on the USWNT
mindset heading into the [.
The United States women's team celebrate their victory over Brazil for the Gold medal in 2008
Olympic Games. The Olympic team included Hope Solo, Heather Mitts, Christie Rampone, Lindsay
Tarpley, Shannon Boxx, Amy Rodriguez, Heather O'Reilly, Carli Loyd, Kate Margraf, Angela Hucles,
and Lori Chalupny.
Abby Wambach flew to Portland, Maine this past week to be present for the opening ceremonies of the
US Youth Soccer Region I Championships. Here's a link to Blog entries by the players and coaches at
the tournament. And guess who was there with his team? Our own Morgan, of Final Four Fame!

Here's Cindy McCain speaking about "the only way to get around in Arizona." (This is way
too easy ... I think I'm starting to feel a tad mean-spirited and guilty.) I'll get over it,
though. Mark Zeigler writes from San Diego about tonight's USWNT vs. Brazil match-up ... the second
this week. On [.
The USWNT kicks off against Japan tomorrow morning at 5AM ET and will (hopefully) field a team with
its heads screwed on more securely than on Wednesday! I like to think that Wednesday's game was a
collective test, to see whether "Boom Ball" really doesn't work. Lesson learned, guys?
Gayle Bryan has written about [.
It's been a crazy week at the Red Stars office, from the USWNT allocation in Manhattan on Tuesday,
to the USA vs. Ireland game last night at Toyota Park, we've all been logging 18 hour days &
hundreds of miles. So before we move on to the international draft, I just wanted to take

Yes, according to The Writer's Almanac, it's Arianna Huffington's birthday. Best wishes - and I'm
glad your journey landed you in the blogosphere! From the Huffington Post, here's a good piece my
Tom Matzzie about the ongoing lobbying from big oil and the Bush administration to allow
off-shore drilling.
According to BigSoccer (thanks Dandal and the Swedish press) Pia will be with the USWNT through the
2012 Olympics. That is wonderful news! Here's a thread about Pia's performance ... note how
the comments "evolve" as the USWNT moves deeper and deeper into the tourney! Also on
BigSoccer, an interesting thread about Carli Lloyd.
After a beautiful weekend away and a great visit with HollyCornblog and CharlieHopbrew, there's a
lot to catch up on. I'm sure I'll be back in the swing in a couple of days ... but right now it's
pretty slow-going. On the USWNT front, Lauren Cheney is replacing Abby on the roster, as the team

Germany-Japan are underway and Japan is looking goo so far (17th minute). meanwhile, I can't
imagine what the USWNT must be feeling right now. Hopefully they are focused and confident. Their
making it to the gold medal match is a wonderful accomplishment and, at the very least, has brought
the eyes [.
Yes, it's true. Turdblossom (aka Karl Rove) has spoken out about the excesses of the McCain
campaign ads. To my mind the fact that he would do this publicly speaks, not to any new found
sense of decorum or fair play in the doughy sleazeball, but to the fractiousness and internecine
warfare within the Republican [.
It's day two of what continues to feel like a new era. Obama faces a plethora of daunting
tasks, and we are on notice that for hope to burn bright, we need to roll up our sleeves and
help. That's the difference. Obama's no white-haired GOP fake Father-Knows-Best, but a
competent and inspiring leader who's [.
Here's just a quick piece from The Huffington Post, highlighting a Robin Roberts interview with
Elizabeth Edwards about her commitment to work with the Obama team - especially focusing on health
care issues. Meanwhile Charlie Black's disturbing statement quoted in Fortune Magazine has raised
lots of eyebrows.
Finally! clipped from www.ussoccer.com The U.S. Women's National Team defeated Brazil, 1-0, on a
41st minute goal from forward Amy Rodriguez in a scrappy encounter at the 2008 Peace Queen Cup,
giving the USA control of Group B and taking a major step toward a berth in the tournament's
championship game.
Just to keep you up to date ... the Red Sox lost and the Phillies won ... and there's nothing from
Beulah yet. Rest assured that I'll post as soon as I see anything! Last night I dreamed that I had
a quick breakfast with Pia Sundhage and April Heinrichs. (April joined us midway
