Who would have thought that Swansea at home this Saturday would be such a pivotal game in the
Arsenal's Premier League campaign? Not this subscriber, that's for sure. You see, I saw the season
thus far panning out like this; Geordies away, three points, nae messin', man.
Bin-dippers at home?
Pipita Scored and Kaka had another good game. Great Signs ‘Assumptions are the mother
of all Fuckups!' – I once heard my brother (who's an associate Regional Director of a Fortune
500 Company) scold one of his subordinates. Filipinos have a similar adage: ‘Maraming Namatay
sa Maling Akala' (Many have died from the wrong assumptions), I was often told when I was
young.
There comes a point in every player's career when they must be sacrificed in favour of a younger
man. The natural order of football means there will always be a younger model, keen to take your
place in the side. This is even more pertinent in international football, with players increasingly
wanting to extend their club careers.

It has been a long road to international credibility for Stewart Downing but six years after making

Did Capello's decision to put faith in Gary Cahill pay off in Bulgaria?
Gary Cahill stepped out of the international shadows in Sofia to stake his claim to be Rio
Ferdinand's successor. Cahill struck up an instant bond with restored England skipper John
Terry as the Three Lions kept a clean sheet in Bulgaria and served notice that he has what it takes
to eventually replace 81-times capped Ferdinand, who will be 33 in November.

For those looking in on England's progress over the past decade, it is clear that both supporters
and media oscillate wildly from boundless optimism to the depths of despair.
The Three Lions are either World-beaters or a bunch of over-paid prima donnas not worthy of the
shirt – you would be led to believe anyway.
Supporting the England national team is like a never-ending seesaw of excitement juxtaposed with
disappointment. On paper, England have always fielded squads with some of the best players in the
world which spark intense hype. However, England seem to always fall short of their lofty
expectations in a variety of ways on the big stage.

I never seem to learn from my mistakes when it comes to watching England. With the absence of club
football I guess their matches fulfil my fix for the week, which is reflected in the media, who
with pages to fill go a little bit England-crazy.
The problem is that the games – usually friendlies but also now competitive matches – prove to
be turgid, frustrating let-downs.

I'm not entirely sure where to start with this article, but I can safely say that
yesterday represented, for me at least, the culmination of almost 12 months of agony whilst
following the fortunes of England and it's now hapless manager, Fabio Capello. A good place to
begin would be to think back to the Group qualifying game against Algeria in South Africa last
year at the 2010 World Cup.
Craig Bellamy's golf game, the media's desire to talk negatives, and putting the muckraking
press in its place over the issue of Carroll, drinking, and fitness in the wake of Capello's
comments earlier in the week. We'll be along with more soon, but for now have an entertaining and
informative exchange from Kenny Dalglish's pre-Stoke press conference to help pass the time:
