"I'm looking for a Mr Capello?"
No World Cup is complete without a media-appointed Group of Death, the sort of quartet that
makes you wince just thinking about it.
Here are seven of the most memorable GoDs in World Cup history:
1. ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, ITALY
(Group C, second phase, 1982 World Cup)
Who made it out alive?
Combing through the news wires, here is the immediate reaction from the English press and
pundits to being drawn in the same group as the United States:
"We can't argue with that draw and that's as good as we could have expected," said Terry
Venables, who enjoyed a two-year spell as England national coach in the mid-1990s.

It is practically impossible for Kazakstan to qualify for the 2010 World Cup Finals, whereas
England are sitting quite comfortably at the top of Group Six, 5 points ahead of nearest rivals
Croatia.
A suggestion for World Cup success Dear Mr Capello, An idea. OK, so it may be a tad premature but
if we're going to finally win another World Cup, we need some cutting edge ideas. The Argentinians
had a Hand of God in 1986, the Germans perfected the noble art of diving in 1990, the Brazilians
learned [.
1. Even great defenders can forget how to defend Rio Ferdinand picked up from his shocker in the
Manchester derby last month with another somewhat dubious display of decision-making as Robert
Green became England's first dismissal of the Capello era. However, the game presented a perfect
‘can do no wrong' opportunity for the English: win [.
This is not the worst team in the Premier League. It is the least valuable. This team would
incite the masses with talent, with name recognition and with expense. They would then fail
pathetically. This team could be composed entirely of Newcastle players, but we thought we'd
include a few others to keep things interesting.
Undici anni in bianconero.
Having witnessed England scrape past a very mediocre Slovenia side on Saturday, I couldn't help but
ponder England's trials and tribulations over the past few years. They're a team who continue to be
surrounded by question marks, and I can't see that changing in the near future, no matter how hard
Capello works.
Is this Rooney's year? As of today Wayne Rooney has 4 goals in 4 league games for his club, and 10
goals for 9 games including cup play and internatioanl games. That's a scoring rate one would not
expect Rooney to maintain, historically speaking. If you have read the football pundits about Wayne
Rooney in any of the last several years, it will have been hard to avoid glowing characterisations
of his football.
ESPN has taken more than their fair share of stick for their football/soccer coverage, and for
good reason. They're American (despite dubbing themselves The Global Leader) and, by and large,
they do American sports well. Others: not so much.
But they've gone off-script with their latest venture, the Soccer Power Index, designed to
render World Cup 2010 moot.
Capello should tap this man for ideas
Capello on how other sports can influence football and how he is going to use them to prepare
the England team for the World Cup.
"It's important to understand the psychology of all these sports and they've helped me to
improve my own style," said Capello.
The following list of elite midfield players in the world will exclude the likes of Lionel
Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka since they sometimes play as forwards or as support strikers
depending on the strategy deployed by their team. Kaka has previously played as a second striker
during his spell with Milan while both Messi and Ronaldo have played in various attacking positions
for their club (mostly on the wing though).

Match Preview
England v Andorra - England hosts Andorra with a chance to punch their ticket to South
Africa next summer. The Brits have been perfect in their 6 matches and currently have a 2-0-0
record at home.
1. What a disappointment. Where was the nailbiting last gasp qualification securing goal/hard
fought 0-0? Two games to spare? Give us a break, Capello. 2. Only kidding! We're going to South
Africa. And what an emphatic way to make sure. 3. Composed passing play, coherent attacking play,
neat angles and positioning.
What on earth could have caused Francesco Totti's wife Ilary to have such a reaction?
Click through to find out. (And no, it's not seeing her hubby in a mullet.)
We've seen Fabio Capello, Jose Mourinho and others of their ilk get the Italian TV show
Chiambretti Night treatment, and this time around it was Ilary's turn.

Mr. David came all the way from Milan to watch his old squad United take on Arsenal.
Afterward his old boss gave him the cold shoulder and got all buddy-buddy with Mr. Capello.
Kind of hilarious.
Sir Alex must be an MLS fan.

Spot the odd one out? Capello. He's not a knob. 'Mike Bassett, England Manager' is the most
legendary Football film ever made. Forget 'Damned United', 'Football Factory', 'Mean Machine'.
They've got nothing on Bassy. He danced half-naked on a bar infront of Pele, opened his curtains to
the media completely starkers, and he liked the Christmas Pudding [.
Unfortunately for Slaven Bilic, the Croatian coach didn't heed that warning prior to sending out
comments that have ended up in the England team locker room.
As Matt Hughes of the Times Online reports, Fabio Capello has thanked Slaven Bilic for giving
England all the motivation they need to win tonight's World Cup qualifier at Wembley.
The world might be football mad and in England we have the most high profile and richest
professional men's league in the world, but when it comes to the women's game the level of interest
and support remain frustratingly small. While Capello's men play at the shiny new Wembley,
England's women have yet to play [.
"I'm getting the words 'Group of Death'..."
It's time for you to look into your Sepp Blatter-shaped crystal ball and predict which group
England will land in tomorrow's World Cup draw in Cape Town. Exciting stuff, eh.
These are the four pots:
POT 1 (Seeds):
Argentina, Brazil, ENGLAND, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Holland
POT 2 (Asia, Oceania and North/Central America):
Australia, New Zealand, Honduras, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mexico, United
States.
As FIFA notes on their website, Draw ignites FIFA World Cup fever, it was an early Xmas present
for the US Men's National Team today as the final draw was completed.
While South Africans smiled upon learning that the host nation's Opening Match
on 11 June would be played against Mexico at Soccer City, it was the outcome of
Group D which caused the biggest stir.
Fabio Capello called Rooney a "Crazy Man" during training on Tuesday. As true as that may be, it
doesn't take away from how vital Rooney is to England's success. England has a 100% record in World
Cup Qualifiers, thanks in large part to Crazy Man Rooney. According to Castrol football Rooney is
currently the best player [.
In Episode 8 We find out what religious figure Jose the Special 1 likens himself to and get to
see Capello get a lap dance in Italy. As always, be champions!

Goalkeeper alert as Robert Green has refused to sign a new contract at West Ham. Green is 29
years old and will be looking to cement a place in Capello's England squad over the next two
internationals.
The position of goalkeeper is one that Wenger has never really filled since the departure of
Seaman.
Well they beat Andorra 6-0, are top of the group by ten points and you can expect every Englishman
to talk it up from here on it.
England 2010: No chance...although Mr Capello has this Irishman a tad concerned.
Still Wayne Rooney ain't Zidane, Messi or Kaka is he..and he's the best they've got.
The England star must be left feeling frustrated and livid that United have signed a new
striker, just over a week after he pleaded with Sir Alex Ferguson for a chance to play
centre-forward for the Red Devils. Rooney has done the dirty work for Christiano Ronaldo over the
last three seasons, as Ronaldo has taken all the headlines and has earned his dream huge money move
to Real Madrid.
Grant Wahl on Twitter:
Quote: Beckham being held accountable by Donovan/LA fans is best thing that could happen to Galaxy
on field. He's actually motivated to play now. At best, he'll be interested up until that moment
when someone says that playing in MLS endangers his England chances, then he'll go back to being
disinterested and upset at his whole situation.
There's something sarong about Becks' attitude
I know this isn't US Soccer related, but I find this situation pretty annoying. David Beckham
abandoned his team for half a season. Instead of admitting he did in order to achieve his
personal goals (pretty understandable), he tried to deflect heat by claiming all other players in
his situation would have chosen the same path.
Just a week from his return to the Galaxy and a hair's breadth from a fan's assault, Becks is
again pushing his luck. This time he wants to play Holland in a friendly. The match is awkwardly
placed between important MLS encounters with New England and Seattle.
More power to him if he can pull this off and commit himself to the Galaxy but Bruce Arena is
going to request him not to return for the friendly to be played in Amsterdam.
"Beckham knows well that if he doesn't return to a big European championship in December he'll have
no chance for the World Cup"
-Fabio Capello (La Gazzetta dello Sport. 8/10/09)
...and then he made one mistake and we sold him to Everton for 30 cents on the dollar... or
pound... or whatever? That was good planning, seeing as United now have three... no two.... okay,
one and a half fit and capable goalkeepers to start the season off.
Following a performance that would have made Massimo Taibi proud, 26 year old Ben Foster was
pulled out of the England squad that will face Holland this week.
Get in!
"You keep caning me and then you ask for interviews," Owen said, turning down requests to speak
about his goal against Wigan to the press.
There is something appealing about Owen's "me against the world" attitude. It's a feeling we so
frequently feel against the FA and the press.
Watch England v Croatia live here.
The England squad for the international break (a friendly against Slovenia on Saturday,
September 5 and the World Cup qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday, September 9) sees Rio
Ferdinand, Theo Walcott and David James miss out due to injury while Peter Crouch, Wes Brown and
Aaron Lennon return to the fold.
Admiral Capello strides onto the bridge. "Status report, Lieutenant Rooney!" he
shouts.
Rooney is grim. "The Croatians have boarded the ship, Sir," he says. "They've already scored
two goals."
"I see," says Capello. He turns to his chief defensive officer.
At look at the winners and losers of another weekend of Premier League action.
Winners
Chelsea
Chelsea is the best team in Europe at the moment. That doesn't mean that they will win the
Champions League or the Premier League, it simply means that they are playing better than anyone in
Europe at the moment.
I have no idea how Mark Hughes does this.
Manage a club with so many players who are no shows. The club with the most bloated transfer
payroll with very little to show for it. His star player is the Lindsey Lohan of the soccer world
with his fair share of entries in the police blotter. Even his countrymen have washed their hands
of Robinho.
At the start of every season there are certain players who hope to make it into the frist team
squad, they are given chances on the pre-season tour and in the Carling Cup.
Here is a resume of some of those players and what they managed to achieve this season.
Jack Wilshere
At the start of the season there was great hope that Jack Wilshere will establish himself in the
first team squad.
