Here are the matches that the 32 World Cup teams will be using to tune their tactics and make
the final squad decisions before the big show. Mexico is apparently from the "more is better"
school of match scheduling. They are playing constantly throughout May and early June. Argentina,
as far as published friendlies go, looks to be opting for training camp over match fitness, with
only early home matches with Haiti and Canada.
Sorry that we are so late with this, but some of us had to give a graduation speech at the local
college and had to prepare for that. Anyway, better late than never, I suppose.
The big match of the weekend, of course, is the European Super Bowl as Inter Milan and Bayern
Munich face off in the UEFA Champions League final on Fox at 2:45 this afternoon.
Once the Champions League final is done and dusted tomorrow, that's pretty much it for big time
domestic football.
Whoever's holding the big-eared trophy on Saturday night will be celebrated on Sunday, but once
Monday comes it's all about World Cup build up again.
Not least because that's when the proper World Cup warm up games begin.
SCHEDULE:
May 24 in Melbourne, 4 am ET
Australia vs. New Zealand
May 24 in Saitama, 6:20 am ET
Japan vs. South Korea (TV: ESPN3)
May 24 in London, 3 pm ET
England vs. Mexico (TV: Fox Soccer Channel, Telemundo)
May 24 in Leiria, 2:30 pm ET
Portugal vs.
...even if it wasn't particularly convincing. A well taken goal from Ledley
King, a rubbish handball offside one from Peter Crouch (which we should
try again during the knockout latter stages of the tournament) and an absolute beauty from
Glen Johnson gave England an ultimately flattering 3-1 win over a Mexican team
who had a number of first class chances (23 shots on goal, nine on target to our eight attempts,
five on target) throughout the game.
Brian Lewis has reported that Bouna Coundoul has received a call-up from the Senegalese National
Team. He currently leads MLS in saves with 67, and is third in save percentage (77.9%). He is also
near the top of the league in wins and shutouts.
Taking a look at the FIFA.com website, Senegal's next match is a friendly against Cape Verde
Islands, on August 11.

I have just seen the Italian World Cup squad and I am amazed. In this blessed time of huge
continental football exposure and coverage, I am unable to recognise more than a handful of names.
Those I do recognise, such as Gattuso, Zambrotta and Cannavaro, could easily be classed as past
their prime.
In the wake of the news Nani will miss the world-cup Carlos Queiroz did his last tinkering
against Mozambique. We scored 3 and more importantly came to a few important conclusions.
1) Fábio Coentrão has definitely won Queiroz's trust as left-back.
2) Nani's replacement is Duda.
3) Simão has lost his effectiveness.
Picture this, if you will, for a moment: a young man named Gelson Fernandes arrives at the age
of five with his mother from the Cape Verde islands, where as immigrants they land in a rather
different place: the French-speaking Alps of Switzerland, in the beautiful but snowy town of Sion.
There, as he grows up, he shows a talent for football, and ends up training with the local academy,
and beginning a career in Professional football that takes him from the modest club of FC Sion to
the French club of Saint-Etienne, and onto the Swiss national team.
