Joe Cannon vs. Brad Knighton: The Stats Don’t Lie

There has been a lot of debate on the Twitter verse about who should be the starting goalkeeper this season for the Whitecaps. Do you go with the 38-year-old, 14 year MLS veteran Joe Cannon? Or, do you go with ... Continue reading →

The South Stand Report - Toronto v Vancouver... or Greatest. Match. Ever.

Sometimes, this part of the report is written before a match in a vain attempt to build towards some kind of atmosphere, as someone who's reliving the "match-day experience" or whatever that could possibly mean in MLS(E) land. But tonight, there will be no pre-match set-up beyond the following : Toronto mediocre, everyone else better, wonder how the hell a team six seasons on is still this crap.

THE SOUTH STAND REPORT : Toronto v Vancouver... Or worst champions evar!?!?1!!!

When I think of the V-cup (formerly the NutCan), I think of stupid 8pm kick-offs and a traditional staring competition with the eye of some storm. I'm not impressed that the correlation doesn't involve a championship.

Can you believe it? We've won this thing before. Many times.

A point on the board, a clean sheet, on the road, and probably the better team by a slight margin. All without two starters. Considering the struggles of the MLS Eastern Conference versus their Western Conference counterparts, that's not a bad return.

Those less charitable might point out that Vancouver isn't really all that great and will struggle to be involved in the playoff picture.

Portland Timbers

Kings of Cascadia! Well, more like Kings of BC!

Quick Recap:

Portland Timbers control the first half for 45 minutes and 30 seconds and get the first goal. The 30 seconds they didn't control the game the Vancouver Whitecaps get a Corner on a dubious call and of course they score. Portland did not let the late first half goal get them down and they came out firing on all cylinders and got the go ahead goal.

First off, I accept that this is a pretty unfair comparison.

To rank any Arsenal team from any era against the most feted group of Gunners ever to have worn the sacred cannon is clearly destined to be a mismatch.

It's a bit like comparing Dan Brown with Charles Dickens, or Boyzone with the Beatles.

Why do Arsenal fans leave Emirates so early?

Arsenal Insider at related • 0 views

I'm starting to think I'm missing out on something. Is there a big party that everyone goes to? Something exciting on the telly? Or perhaps it's a free goodie bag for the first 10,000 on to the tube?

It's an age old moan but I am going to go on about it again. Just what is people's (I'm refusing to call them fans) excuse for leaving Arsenal games at the Emirates early?

I wanted to win this game so badly before kickoff. I just wanted the players to leave their blood, sweat and tears all over the pitch. I got the sweat, but not the result. With Chelsea beating Birmingham today, it leaves Arsenal in 3rd place. Disappointing, but the performance from the team showed heart and

The game started as if the players had been shot out of a cannon and it barely let up for the entire first half.

Is this Arsenal’s home shirt 2011/12?

I was sent a link yesterday to what is claimed to be Arsenal's home shirt for next season. Of course, the kit will be going along with the 125th anniversary theme and to be honest if this is it I will be wholly disappointed:

I had seen some prospective designs for next season a little while ago and there was one quite similar to this, however there were far better designs there.

What a Match – Sagna The Stalwart

What a match that was against Leeds. I know you saw it, so I won't go into all the gory details. Needless to say it was a thrilling match with a lot of back-and-forth play, featuring some stunning goals. Sagna blasted home a real cannon that the ghost of Schmeichel was unable to parry (check out my previous post for a picture of Sagna on top of the world with a goblet of fire wine while the Millenium Falcon flies overhead).

Liverpool loved Fernando Torres... now they rightly mock him

Torres had every attribute a Liverpool No 9 should possess. Strength, speed, ruthlessness and a right foot that could blast like a cannon. He was a force of nature, lively and worked tirelessly.

It mustn't have been much fun growing up with the name "Pratley". Kids can be so cruel etc etc. However, on Saturday against Man City, the Bolton midfielder almost lived up to his unfortunate moniker after bizarrely firing in a 25-yard effort on his own goal, only for the ball to cannon back off the crossbar.

Today’s Poll Question – What Would Cause You to Drop Arsenal as Your Favorite Team?

The Offside - Arsenal at related • 0 views

I got to thinking about this question in the wake of the most recent Carlos Tevez controversy. I know he's been a constant headache for years, but the latest news is that he apparently refused to enter the game on Tuesday, when Mancini summoned him at about the 60 minute mark. Of course, as an Arsenal fan, I pretty much just laughed at this one, hoping this is the beginning of a downward slide for Man City this season.

The controversy over Luis Suarez's alleged racial abuse of Patrice Evra may have overshadowed Liverpool's (forgettable) draw with Man United at the weekend, but it also took the focus away from two blatant acts of cheating during the game.

As you will see from the evidence below, United's Ashley Young and Liverpool's Stewart Downing were guilty of trying to con the referee with outrageous dives.
