Good to see Merryn Sherwood and the Canberra Times giving increased and excellent coverage to
Canberra United.
News this week:
Former Canberra based Matilda Sally Shipard will not return to football and play in the W-League
this year. She doesn't rule it out in the future.
The camera never lies, well this one did. Apologies for the shot but Grace Gill pictured here with
Christine Ng and Doug Gibbs in the background is looking a little bit concerned about the initial
question from the Awesome Foursome on this weeks Nearpost Radio show.
But Grace soon had us running round in circles as the talented defender swotted us away like flies.
The new Canberra United website was launched today.
Nationally:
Dylan Macallister, Lawrie McKinna talk us through the Magnificent Mariners.
Young Matildas Coach Alen Stajic reviews the recent camp and looks ahead.
We review the A-League Round 3, talks Socceroos v Holland and have dedication and quiz questions
and all the news.
Locally:
Extended interview with Canberra United W-League Coach Robbie Hooker talks about his new role.
100,000 plus women and girls play football, now we have the W-League...hooray.
Canberra United to win the league, Melbourne to play at the Dome before Sydney Melbourne game this
week, W-League on the telly every week it's all too much and Russ Gibbs and 2XX to call all United
home games...
(Summary is not available.)
Canberra United Coach has handed in his report card after five rounds of the W-League season.
He's given the team an overall B, with the forwards falling below the mark. Lydia Williams brings
the average up with an A.
Read Robbie's report card and feel free to write what you think.
Can you spot the Matildas in the photo and not just the Wannabee's
Wannabee's Matildas flocked to show their skills to World Cup hero Caitlin Munoz and Asian Cup star
Amy Chapman on a cold Friday night at Dickson Oval.
The usual training session was taken by not one, but two, of Australia's star players.
Great to hear Canberra United announce their first signings this morning. I listened to Robbie
Hooker on ABC radio this morning announced the players. And Tim Gavel got a few things wrong:)
Firstly the signings:
Caitlin Munoz, Amy Chapman. Lydia Williams and Grace Gill are all Matildas and local players who
have signed up.
Canberra United drew 0-0 with Adelaide United in a game shown live on ABC TV ,and called live on
2XX 98.3FM.
A miserable "summers" day kept the crowd down but still over 800 people braved the
elements to watch a game, ruined by the referee....
and signs of Capital Punishment, Canberra United, and Brush em off were spread around the ground.
Having listened to Heather Reid on Nearpost Radio last night discussing plans for the first game in
the Westfield W-League for Canberra United in October, I'm predicting a record crowd for McKellar
Stadium. (Expected to be the venue but to be confirmed.)
With all the hype, the entertainment planned, it should be a day to remember and a great turn-out.
W-League is coming even if things have gone a tad quiet. I'm expecting the TV Deal with the ABC to
be announced next Thursday...and..
in Canberra I'm expecting the Coach to be announced next week.
There have been a number of applicants, interviews were held last week, so an announcement any day
soon.
ActewAGL have signed up as front of shirt Canberra United sponsor. Good news.
And United Coach Robbie Hooker announced further signings this morning.
Local players Rebecca Kiting, Ellie Brush, Bronwyn Studman, Chrissy Walters, and Dubbo Matilda
Ashleigh Sykes have all joined the club.
Young Matildas lost 4-3 today to Japan Under 19's, but in other local news the Coach of Canberra
United will be announced on Friday morning.

Now just the small job of getting a team:) Good luck Robbie. And you can hear Robbie on Nearpost
Radio from 7pm next Tuesday. Robbie will be talking players, plans, promotion and more.
Canberra United. It feels good, doesn't it, to have a team in Canberra finally.
Ivan Slavich is on one of the supporters family buses to Sydney to show support for a Canberra
A-League team. Why not get your club to have your own football singing bus. I'm sure there'll be a
Tuggeranong United bus.
Football Federation Australia announced today can call all the Canberra W-League games live.
Canberra football's Number One Commentator Russ Gibbs will be calling live, with the help of other
"experts" (not me I am disappointed to share:) all the Canberra United Women's games.
And with the W-League Websites expected to go live Monday, TV deal to be announced and further
signings to be announced.
Queensland Roar may have won the Minor Premiership but they can't beat Canberra United.
They lost at home earlier in the year to United and should have lost tonight.
Ashleigh Sykes was brought down in the second half with United leading 1-0. Casey Dumont the six
foot Queensland keeper should have been carded but in keeping with the overall quality of W-League
refereeing she stayed on the park and saved the subsequent Ellie Brush penalty.
No fixtures announced for the W-League yet. And apparently they won't be out until October.
The FFA ARE going to release the fixtures before the season starts although there
has been some debate about this.
Some members of the FFA want to release the fixtures after the first game.
Russ Gibbs called the game on 2XX, and it was a great call. I listened, unable to get to the game,
but the excitement of the the United win, the chanting of the crowd and goals goals goals made for
great radio.
For those 1152 lucky enough to see "the best W-League game this season" I suspect they
will be back next week for the Queensland game.
Semi Finals hear we come, Media Release United 1 Roar 1 from Canberra United below.
Canberra United have booked a date with the Newcastle Jets in the Westfield W-League semi finals
following a 1-1 draw with the Queensland Roar at McKellar Park on Saturday evening in wet

The new Canberra United Coach is expected to be announced on Friday at MacKellar Stadium, a call
for Assistant Coach and Team Manager will go out ASAP.
And players will be recruited ASAP after that.
And I'm expecting the TV deal to be announced this week as well. September is going to be a busy
month for our new National side.

So delighted to announce 2XX is taking Canberra's premier sporting team across the city, country

No longer will a Caitlin Munoz shield, an Amy Chapman goal, or Lydia Williams save just be seen by
those at the game.
Canberra United start their campaign with two away games before their first home game against the
Central Coast Mariners on Sunday Nov 9th at MacKellar.
Canberra play Melbourne, Queensland, and Central Coast all twice and Sydney, Newcastle and Perth
and Adelaide once.
Canberra's ABC TV live games are expected to be Queensland (away) 2nd Round and Adelaide (HOME)
round 5
Full fixtures below.
ACTAS player Steph Tokich has signe for Adelaide United, presumably Steph is guaranteed a start.
Interesting none the less and good to see another Canberran in the league.
Lydia Williams will start in goals against Vietnam tomorrow in the ASEAN final.
Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni said, "We decided before we even left for the tournament the
goal-keeping roster and if they made the final, then Lydia would start."
The Matildas probably only have 12 field players available with Amy Chapman and Clare Polkinghorne
suspended, Renee Rollason also in doubt and Elise Kellond-Knight probably won't play.
A night at the A-League tomorrow. Thursday 6th Nov. Ned Zelic (fmr Socceroo and Canberran), Danny

And find out about the Canberra A-League bid.
Canberra United recorded their second win, and second away win of their campaign to move into the
top four of the W-League after 4 games.
A goal from Sasha McDonnell sealed the win. But Melbourne Victory had a penalty claim turned down,
Robbie Hooker said we should have scored more, (heard that before) and Grace Gill had a goal
chalked off for offside.
Canerra United star Amy Chapman was delighted with the win in Melbourne yesterday and praised the
United defence for their resolute second half display.
"We played a good attacking first half, perhaps unfortunate not to capitalise on our chances,
but the strong headwind in the second half made it very difficult for us to get into their
half," said Chapman.
Saturday 4pm live on ABCTV, but here's a chance to show your support for Canberra United and
A-League4Canberra to the whole nation, and particularly the FFA.
Canberra United v Adelaide United.
Adelaide have two key strikers....out!
Wear your green, shout and holler for the team and show the FFA not only do we support the W-League
in big numbers but we also want an A-League team.
Canberra United trailed 2-0 in the West with ten minutes to go. Superstar Lisa De Vanna had scored
after half-time to give Perth the two goal lead.
But Ashleigh Sykes, United's young striker scored two late goals and the points were shared.
Canberra are now in 5th place with four to play, a point outside the crucial top four.
Warning: DO NOT WATCH THIS GAME ALONE.
To be seen in GREEN, there is a gathering to watch the Canberra United historic live game against
Queensland Roar in Brisbane on ABC 4pm LIVE this Saturday.

Canberra United beat Queensland Roar 1-0 in Brisbane today to gain their opening win of the
W-League season so I thought I'd better write something, because we all love a winner:)
A hard fought win, United were focused for the full ninety with so many heroes all over the
park.
The game was televised on ABC, and it was great to see the local team on the box.

Canberra United thumped the Central Coast Mariners 3-0 in Sydney today. With Sydney losing to
bottom place Perth and Melbourne losing to table topping Queensland, Canberra moved into joint
second place, albeit for a short time with Newcastle expected to thump Adelaide tomorrow.
And next week United are at home to Melbourne Victory who are one place above; we could be set up
for a home Semi if United do the unthinkable and win at home and the Jets lose to Queensland.
