This week, Tuesday 6.30pm: Nationally we cover the Socceroos and the World Cup from an armchair
perspective. Quiz, news and dedication.
USA Pilot Stacey talks about her Matildas passion
Terry from the Tropics finds THE indigenous community in the NT.
Locally from 7pm Russ and Chris' big interview is with the head of Coever Coaching (Australia)
Jason Lancsar.
We might not have an A-League team (yet) or a State League team or even a Men's Representative
side, but Canberrans can still play football.
Robbie Cattanach scored three on the opening day of the season for Manly United last weekend.
And the AIS has Sam Munro, Kofi Danning, Dom Giampaolo, Ivan Pavlak and Dane Milovanovic in this
years squad.
Canberra boys Ivan Pavlak and Steven Lustica are currently trialling in Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb.
Good luck to them, but surely another reason why Canberra needs an A-League side and a
Reserve/Youth side.
How many Canberrans are now trialling playing professional football overseas, in VPL or NSWPL?
Canberra soccer season kicks off with thousands on the team
By Merryn Sherwood
Canberra Times journalist Merryn Sherwood wrote one of the best football season openers I've ever
seen in Canberra. A few people have requested the whole article.
Merryn has kindly agreed for me to republish it here.
Belconnen United lose, Canberra FC progress, ACTAS run ends in a weekend of Fed Cup men's
drama.
Canberra FC had Captain Paul Ivanic sent-off but scraped home 2-1 over a vastly improved Queanbeyan
City.
ACTAS went down 2-1 to White Eagles
O'Connor Knights dumped Belconnen out 2-1.
Do you know these Internationals?
Former Canberra Football Tragic Rod Lynes played in a Masters 7-a-side Tournament in Bangkok last
weekend. It is a yearly event. But do you recognise the members of the All-Star who were in the
same tournament.
A Clue: They are all Welsh or English former Internationals, apart from Rod he's a Socceroos,
Rangers and Coventry City fan and he's the one in between the former Liverpool and Everton players.
Football in Canberra is booming. Registrations for the new season are expected to top 12,000
juniors for the first time.
But the Clubs need volunteers, desperately. Coaches, Committee members and all-round good guys and
gals.
If your child is playing, give a little more and get involved in your club.
Ben Barac lashed home the equaliser.
Moshen Povanparsa thumped home a bullet header from a sensational Rohan Coleman
cross.
O'Connor Knights shocked the Canberra football community with a 3-2 win.
Russ Gibbs reporting for the Nearpost said, "The underdogs O'Connor Knights have claimed the
Federation Cup for the first time in their history with a surprise 3-2 victory under the
floodlights at Belconnen Soccer Club.
NEXT GENERATION OF MATILDAS TACKLE NEW ZEALAND IN CANBERRA.
And not a Canberran in the squads. Is that a first for Canberra?
NEXT GENERATION OF MATILDAS TACKLE NEW ZEALAND IN CANBERRA
The next generation of Matildas will gather in Canberra this week for training matches against New
Zealand at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
So the Junior football season is up and running in Canberra, and across the whole nation.
Here in the Capital we have 17,000 registered players. So thought I should drop a line each week on
the game, the parents, the kids, the game.
It's a limited view, it's my view and it may or may not meet with your opinion.
Taylor Beaton: What he needs to do, Canberra's Matildas head-off, Rockets to play tonight, Next
Young Canberrans to impress Alex Tobin, and Amy Taylor get her boots on Football Superstars.
Central Coast Mariners Lawrie McKinna: Taylor Beaton was confident, stepped up, gave short give and
goes, and when he made a mistake he just got on with the game.
Jon Stanhope (Foundation Member) Zed Seselja (FM) Shane Rattenbury (FM) Alistair Coe (FM) Steve
Doszpot (FM and former President of Soccer Canberra) Brendan Smyth (FM) Andrew Barr (FM) all got
elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly. Football now has seven A-League Foundation Members in
Canberra and a few more over the border in Queanbeyan.
Canberra FC lost a pre-season friendly 5-0 to Melbourne Knights in Albury recently, Belconnen
United take on the ANU in a friendly at Canberra Uni on Saturday morning.
How's your team going? Managed to jog around the oval yet...with the ball:)
Train as you mean to play......so let's hope you're out their running your #5$^@# for the Coach.
Canberra developments to be proud of.
Canberra FC will launch their new Deakin Stadium on Sunday. Belconnen United have their own
impressive McKellar Stadium, Woden Valley juniors heading overseas to Europe every year, and they
have a new clubhouse, the growing Lightning Tournament and Kanga Cup are just some of the signs of
the growth of the game in Canberra.
From the FFA
To sustain the growth of the game and to allow FFA to provide national leadership in
the development
and implementation of the programs listed above, the national registration fees have been set
as
follows:
- Junior Player $10.00 including GST
- Amateur Player $20.
Across Australia that uniquely Australian exercise of "finals football" is on.
At Club level across Canberra it's no different. Men and Women's Grand Finals take place next week,
in it must be said, the shortest football season in the World out side maybe Siberia.
Focus usually is on the Premier League's but I bumped into a couple of 5th Graders this week from
the ANU FC (Australian National University).
I'm one happy pig today!
Canberrans are released from their darkness. No National Youth team, no NSW State League team or
even two, no A-League team, no national Women's team. No National Futsal team in a Futsal League.
Nothing. Until now.
And now we have hope and you can hear the voices across the football community starting to rise.
Wellington Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata speaking from the Windy City today said, "We're working to get
our proposal into the FFA by Friday."
You can hear the full interview on Nearpost radio Tuesday 6:30-7:30pm or catch it here on the
podcast on Wednesday.
"We've spoken to Capital Football who are supporting us,.
The Weekender is 450-700 words every Saturday on Australian and/or Canberra Football in it's
broadest sense. Anyone can write the article. Feel free to contact me with a suggestion.
This week I look at Australia's move into Asia and particularly to assess the impact on
Canberra.
And I'm off to the Canberra 20/20 Summit today.
Fed Cup scores below:
Women's
Belconnen United 3 ANU 1
Woden Valley 0 Belwest 2
and in the men's
Canberra FC 3 Tuggeranong United 1
O'Connor Knights 2 White Eagles 1
Finals next weekend.
Hear Russell Gibb and Kar Chivanocopt's report on the Nearpost Radio Tuesday 6.
I attended last Saturday's Canberra 20/20 Summit. This weeks "The Weekender," is my
reflections on the summit.
The Weekender guarantees Canberrans can read a football article on a Saturday in their own time,
written by one of their own. Email me if you'd like to write football.
"I heard you say football, in the group, and I groaned.
TEN bids came in to meet the FFA Deadline today, and not one from Canberra not even an expression
of interest!
Ten possible new A-League sides and the National Capital has not a flutter of hope.
Don't Canberra's Federal and Local Pollies know what football can do for the city, our links with
Asia.
One place up for grabs, five applications, and a decision to be made on Wednesday next week.
One application from Canberra I'm informed, so here's hoping we have another pathway to the
A-League, and beyond, for our Canberra footballers.
The Board of Capital Football meet on tonight to discuss the Wellington Phoenix/Canberra A-League
Youth team proposal. Here's the story if you missed it
Let's hope they do the right thing. There is only option for this fan.
Speaking to many people around Canberra and the only response from football people has been
outstandingly positive.
Hold on to your hats. Three simple sentences.
Capital Football are pushing for an A-League Youth team to start in August 2008, with the FFA
ensuring the Youth spots are open to ALL Australians.
A Canberra Women's team is expected to take it's place in a National League starting in October.
A year to remember a press release from my new best Kiwi friends the Wellington Phoenix.
Canberrans used to be a little suspect about our football prospects. The tide is turning. Step by
step. But read the release from our new friends.
Look what they achieved in one year.
What can Canberra achieve in the future?
Capital Football website is reporting that today could be the decision day for Canberra/Wellington
Phoenix based Youth team.
See Release below for details. And I'll have details later in the day of any decision.
Both side of the ‘ditch' propose Capital Phoenix
The Football Federation of Australia will meet today to discuss the proposal from Capital Football
and the Wellington Phoenix about entering a Canberra-based team in the new National Youth League.
This weekend Russell Gibbs Featured Match: Canberra Olympic v Canberra City. So play up lads, eh:)
Local football coverage continues this week when we see the opening of the men's Premier League
season. Our featured match is at Woden Park where Canberra Olympic take on Canberra City on
Sunday.
Canberra Times journo Merryn Sherwood wrote a terrific article on the coming Canberra football
season, published in Wednesday's paper.
Bet there were a few phone calls from the other codes after this article was published!
But you can only write what the public are saying, and it's about time it's been published.
Fourfourtwo are reporting there may be a shorter Pre-Season Cup this year.
Sounds good, especially if a couple of overseas teams could tour, or Aussies could head overseas.
And why not?
July and August is exactly the times when overseas clubs need games. And let's face it there are a
million football clubs around the World who would like to come to Sydney and particularly
Queensland in winter.
Women's football on the rise in Canberra, Australia. Federal Government money about to flow into
grassroots and womens football. But another blow for Canberra football. This time it's the women
who will suffer!
Looks like the National Women's football league is about to get the nod. Probably for a October
start.
Look who's coming to Woden Valley to celebrate 20 years, Local Politicians in action, ACTAS Girls
challenge for Matildas future.
Woden Valley have a massive celebration coming up Sunday 18 May. It's the launch
of their new Club house and Lawrie McKinna, Ahmad Elrich & Sasho Petrovski are coming to join in
the fun.
There's something about watching football under floodlights that stirs the soul.
There's something about watching football under floodlights that stirs the soul. Maybe it's because
most of the iconoclastic matches that sit in the memory were played under lights. Matches such as
the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich or the ill-fated
1997 World Cup Qualifier with Iran, or more recently of course the momentous 2005 World Cup
Qualifying victory over Uruguay.
With four blockbuster World Cup Qualifier's planned for Sydney, Melbourne and maybe Brisbane before
next July, the Asian Cup Qualifier home games of which there are at least two before July, will
possibly go to regional centres.
Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle or Canberra. So why not Canberra? If we bid now, we might get a game.
