As far as I know Luke Pilkington plays for ANU FC in the ACT Premier League and yet was fit enough
to win a contract, through Football Superstar with Melbourne Victory.
I doubt any young 18 year old from top sides Belconnen United or Canberra FC would be fit enough to
win that competition without considerable extra training.
Canberra United players Ashleigh and Nicole Sykes maybe be barred from playing in their local
Dubbo/Bathurst Under 18 team in the Western District boys league...but the story has reached the
FFA....
And the FFA has it seems engaged their Legal Department quicksmart.
Some members of the local association were laughing almost mocking when I rang them recently.
Canberra has produced a number of Socceroos, A-League players and currently has 4 Canberrans in the
Joeys squad.
So when they announced the first Under 13 boys Australian team ever....thirty spots mind you..I
felt sure with thousands of kids playing football, Coerver Coaching, and various Academy and
Clinics around town surely we'd be able to get one or maybe two players into the squad.
Meet Boomerang FC.
And well done Eddie Senatore and Kristian Collins for doing something that no-one else in Canberra
football have been able to do.
Futsal teams under new club Boomerang FC from 12 boys and girls to Premiers will play in NSW
Premier Futsal league. The implications for Canberra are awesome if you understand the size of the
game in Asia and Worldwide, for now read on.
Stephen Lustica signed for Gold Coast United first-team this week.
What young Canberran wouldn't want to swap places with Canberra's Andrew Baresic and Lustica as
they start their first A-League contracts onlongside Jason Culina and the richest team in the
league..supposedly.
And Central Coast Mariners are increasingly likely to bring an A-League game to Canberra.
I am not so big on reality TV. But if you are going to have it, this one is probably for me. I only
watched the last 2 episodes. Which was enough.
The idea was a top 50 of young football players is reduced to one - selected and then signed by
Melbourne Victory for the upcoming A-League season.
Lucy Zelic says give Pim the flick, we dedicate the show to Tarek Elrich, Paddy Bordier reveals his
A-League team after five seasons!
And why we all love the Gold Coast...and it's the team we all want to watch. And why the FFA have
stuffed Canberra and their own expansion plans. Watch your back Lucas!
FFA Tech Director Han Berger had a chat with me last night about the new technical development plan
put out or about to be by the FFA.
First thing that struck me is that elite sports for kids is so serious these days, and I guess
Aussie football juniors are about to get a rude awakening! Maybe it's already happening in other.
FFA Technical Director Han Berger talking at the National Junior Championships in Canberra
yesterday said there is a chapter in the National Curriculum (coming soon) about the financial
barrier for football.
Football became the World's game because it's so easily accessible for everyone, rich
or poor, everyone can play.
No I haven't gone mad..research shows if you want your kid to succeed at football in Australia or
indeed any other sport this weekend could be the one.
The next and newest Australian National teams are about to be picked. Australia Under 13 girls and
Under 14 for boys! With the girls heading to Vietnam and the boys to Malaysia in the coming months,
both historic sides will be picked from the week long tournaments which take place in Canberra this
weekend.
Former Futsalroo, Head of Coerver Coaching Australia and Canberra Jason Lancsar returned my call
last night from the train from London to Newcastle!
"I'm with
Alf (Galustian, Head of Coerver International) we're heading to Newcastle to do some work with
them," said Jason.
"You'd better hurry coz they are woeful and could get relegated tonight.
Two streams: Talented and Community; but who are the FFA talking to in Canberra?
I went along to the FFA Tech Director Han Berger's introduction to the National Curriculum.
There are two streams; the Community stream and Talented Development stream.
One for the community players which I reckon judging by the standards laid out in the curriculum
for training etc from age 8-19 covers almost 98% of Canberra male players are community.
National Show. DownloadGlen Thomson Coach of the Borroloola Cyclones, and Paddy Bordier, Anthony
Hatton and myself discuss ACL, Newcastle Jets and can Australia support a Second Division. Quiz,
dedications to our Costa Rica listeners and more.

Players FC Boss Anthony Hatton leads the way in junior development in Canberra.
The FFA Technical Report, on the FFA website this week, it's a great start, but it's already taking
us backwards..for the most important people...our children...particularly the 99% who will never
play for Australia.
In Canberra we've been playing small-sided games for a number of years. In particular Under 10's
play 7 v 7.
It's July. Will Canberra get the nod this month?
Can we dare to dream, or will the journey end in tears?
One thing for sure is we haven't died wondering, we're in there fighting for our lives.
Will Canberra be taking the field in twelve months time, three weeks after the World Cup.
Imagine listening to all that twaddle down the years about Small-Sided Games.
It develops your skill, it's great for technique, we must change blah blah blah.
I played small-sided games all my life, on the street with drains for goals. North of England, you
know, life was tough we got up before we went to bed!
Peter Funnell caught up with Canberra United's new Coach Ray Junna.
Where else would you get such a lengthy interview on local football in Canberra?
Got to love volunteers in this city; And it's a great interview.
Download
Emily van Egmond, Overseas players signed up, pathway and training schedule for the team and just
how hard is it to be a United player?

Nationally we talk Expansion and why the FFA love Canberra. Ben Buckley did you take your national
capital for a little ride? Are you continuing to take the city for a ride?
And all the A-League, W-League and football talk you could ever dream of.

Peter Funnell talks to one of Canberra star footballers, Ned Zelic.
Imagine teaching football all week. Not a bad job if you are a teacher!
Imagine Coaching a National League side, throw in an FFA Scholarship which includes an annual trip
overseas to find a mentor, National Under 14 Selector, and Assistant to the first Australian Under
14 team heading to Vietnam in June.
Meanwhile, Central Coast Mariners are investigating taking two home games away from
Gosford, with Canberra Stadium likely to be one of the venues.
SMH journalist Mike Cockerill thought Wollongong were a cashed up shoe-in back in October..well now
he thinks the Mariners may play an A-League game in Canberra.
AFC Futsal Champs will be held in Iran this year.
NSW Thunder will represent Australia this year having defeated Canberra in the final.
Given the strength of ACT Futsal it wouldn't be hard to see Canberra in the AFC Final...and this
tournament held in Canberra.
With the TV viewing figures for Futsal across Asia this is a tournament that could make money.
No, sadly not Canberra, not yet..but Burton Albion.
I was born in the Brewing Capital of the World, surrounded by Brian Clough League Champs Derby
County, European Cup winners Aston Villa, and Notts Forest, and the super Baggies of the
1980's.
Burton is just eight miles from Derby, 21 from Nottingham, 25 from Birmingham, 30 Stoke, 25
Leicester, 25 West Brom, 25 Wolves so plenty of local football around over the years.
Looks and sounds like the Mariners will bring two A-League games to Canberra. V Adelaide and Perth
Glory.
And if Perth Glory sign Denilson or Alvaro Recoba as rumoured we'll be in for a treat like never
before.
These are not pre-season games but regular competitive fixtures.
First the Socceroos now A-League.
How long before you hear one of these comments:
Loitering, yes we're talking about the lazy striker planted by the other coach.
Small Sided Games...whatderyermean it's good for em, just boot it will ya.
Hey Ref...where's your specks.
Hey Coach..what about my son..oh so I am the Coach now!
Settle down!
Fulham will play the Gold Coast, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory but they WON'T be playing in the
football backwater of Canberra....sorry about that....nor Wolves either come to mention it.
Canberra United full-back Nicole Sykes scored three on debut for Young Matildas, she wore the
number 9 shirt...hey isn't Ashleigh meant to be the striker, Nic!
7-0 the YM's thrashed Finland. Nice one!
VARESE
Tuesday 26 May 2009
A hat-trick of goals to Angela Fimmano and Nicole Sykes has helped the Westfield Young Matildas to
an impressive 7-0 victory over the Finland U-19 Women's Team in Italy yesterday.
Nationally Russ, Paddy and two of the Socceroos biggest fans, Jezza Butler and Matt MacDonald talk
Qatar, Bahrain and what it means to qualify again. And Jezza already has three tickets for all the
Aussie games.
And apologies to Young Matildas fans, CD didn't work so we'll play that interview with Alen Stajic
next week.
FFA will launch our World Cup bid in Canberra today. You can see all the action on Fox and SBS live
from 3pm
A great occasion no doubt, with the PM, star players and a staged launch. (Watch out for a Majura
parent giving the "ethnic" speech well that's how it was described to me!)
Me?
Gary van Egmond has already had to take a Public Service funded job and he's only been in Canberra
a week.
The FFA has seemingly backed down on their Under 17 AIS/FFA Funded job....so now it's just an AIS
position. A Public Servant!
And that means he must be a target for the Canberra A-League team.
A few local types in Canberra complain and rant about girls from Dubbo getting a go in the Canberra
United W-League team.
Their logic is clearly flawed in my view. So only players from a town or city which has a W-League
team can play for that team. Should we kick out Ulladulla's Cian Maciejweski, Albury born Amy
Chapman and Albury resident Ellie Brush or do the rules not apply for them?
The next time someone in Canberra tells you we've a huge junior base with 20,000 kids/registrations
tell them they are dreaming, same goes for 260,000 registrations across NSW or the paltry 50,000 in
Victoria.
What we have is a lot of people playing independently in their own clubs, maximum community in
Canberra is Woden Valley 1800.
I'm hearing the FFA are saying we're the front runner and we may get the nod.
Well no better time to announce it than tomorrow in my view.
No suggestion of that but it's time for the FFA to decide on Canberra's fate.
Frank Farina gives us a big plug on the SBS site, Fox Sports mention every player whoever played
for Canberra on tonights game.
So there was a little bit of history repeating itself thanks to a late Canberra United comeback in
Perth to draw 2-2 with the Glory, but apart from that it seems the Westfield W-League results fell
into a little bit more predictable fashion in Round 3. Are the cream starting to separate from the
crop?
Nationally from 6.30 we'll discuss the issues of the week...the Mariners thumping, ACL hear from
Lawrie McKinna, National Junior Championships, and have a heap of news views etc.
Locally from 7pm we'll talk to Nicola Williams, Australian Under 14 Asst Coach, and the only female
coach in the W-League with Perth Glory.
Former Tuggeranong boy Ante Juric will Coach the Australian inaugural Under 13 side. Ante was
sitting alongside FFA Technical Director Han Berger at the trials in Canberra today.
Interviews with both will be aired on the Nearpost Radio in coming weeks.
This week we will have FFA and Perth Glory Coach Nicola Williams in the studio, one of the few
professional female football coaches in Australia, maybe the only one.
If Canberra were in the league we'd have:
Jason Culina, leading Gold Coast United to play at the Canberra Stadium. A Socceroo. Still only 29
would we ever have a fitter, younger, better credentialed Australian playing football in Canberra
at his peak?
Robbie Fowler would be in Canberra to play for Townsville.
West Sydney: Is that the best you've got?
In a sort of Mike Cockerill inspired way West Sydney are ready to go, they've got the "vague"
amount of money..but no doubt they won't need as much as Canberra to get over the line..will
they?
Read all about Western Sydney's latest bid here but don't be fooled by the French/Chinese investors
nor the dilapidated stadium posing as West Sydney's alternative to the Canberra's Australian
Institute of Sport
Me?
It's Canberra of course..with the highest percentage of registered players. Surely a base to build
long-term local football support for an A-League side...
but NSW have 232,000 players whereas Victoria has just 37,000 players. Now we know the Vic's won't
allocate pitches to football, away from their beloved AFL but the difference in numbers between the
two states is incredible.
Tuggeranong United had phones, keys, camera's stolen at training tonight.
Police say this is the third club to be hit in the last few days. If you're training in Canberra
protect your gear.
We are often told how fickle Canberra fans are, Raiders and Brumbies fans...well take a look at
Arsenal.
Champions League Home Semi-Final...they couldn't get out quick enough in the second half...I know I
know they were 4-0 down on aggregate...but really they're playing Man United, just goes to show
these so-called super clubs support their teams when they are down.
