Franco should be a hero in Mexico/PA Sports Image
I understand this is a website dedicated to MLS and US Soccer, but please indulge me in this
moment of personal privilege about our neighbors to the south and our neighbors to the north.
Guille Franco opened his Premier League account yesterday, playing for a less competitive West
Ham side than former Mexican striker Jared Borgetti did in Bolton a few years back.

There is a scene in an otherwise exceptional documentary, The History of Football, that discusses
the formation of Major League Soccer following the 1994 World Cup. A smug Clive Toye pops up to
tell us how MLS "may never be as successful as the NASL, because they didn't have the money we
had," but in the very next sentence bemoans MLS's "tremendous advantage" wrought from a generation
of kids grew up watching the North American Soccer League.

Colin Jose, the preeminent historian of the sport in North America joins us on the podcast. This
show is a must listen for anyone interested in the evolution of the game in North America. Soccer
history in the US/Canada did not begin in the late 1980s, and the sport is not a new one in this
part of the world, as has been argued by some.

The Offside 24 August @ 06:00 PM EDT
As Giuseppe Rossi became, officially, Giuseppe Rossi this summer - you know, finally fulfilled that
enormous hype on the international scene - Jonathan de Guzman is officially becoming Jonathan de

"And anyone forthwith who is ignorant of the meaning of
a 'rouge' is will have their citizenship revoked and shall be
forever expelled from the land" - British North America Act.
We have a version of American football, which we call Canadian football. It involves one less
'down' and the field is bigger or something, but at the end of the day is still a bastardization of
rugby and a pox on all things holy and true.

the yorkies 04 July @ 09:25 PM EDT
Regular readers of The Yorkies' site know that one of our aims is to shed light on the fairly poor
coverage of Toronto FC in the local mainstream media. In order to illustrate this, and positive
coverage as well, we are set to unveil The Yorkies'
"TFC Media League".
The league will be a year-long tally featuring local media outlets vying to win the prestigious
Graham Leggat Trophy named for the Scottish pioneer of Canadian football broadcasting.

This CONCACAF Gold Cup will be contested by watered down squads from the two traditional
CONCACAF heavyweights, the USA and Mexico. Additionally, the failure of Trinidad & Tobago and
Guatemala to qualify for this edition of the event opened the field up.
Guadeloupe, a surprise package to everyone but myself two years ago (I actually believed
Guadeloupe could make the final two years ago before the event and they almost did) returns with
another strong team as does Jamaica who missed qualification in 2007.

When it comes to the Nutrilite Canadian Championships, you really have to live here to get it.
Outsiders look at it and wonder why anyone would care about an event that only involves three
teams.
Where it is true that the tournament (which will only be referred to as the Voyageurs' Cup from
here on out – more on that in a bit) is small, it is far from insignificant to Canadian soccer
fans.
