Ronaldo brace sinks Santos

Two fabulous strikes from Ronaldo and a free kick from Chicão have put Corinthians firmly in the driving seat in the finals of the Campeonato Paulista.

Santos had the bulk of the opportunities in front of around 17,000 of their own fans but failed to capitalize and paid the price against a side which has specialized in hitting teams on the break.

Kléber Pereira and Madson enjoy the moment

Palmeiras went out of the Campeonato Paulista following a 2-1 loss to Santos in the Palestra Itália. Three players were red-carded - including the brainless Diego Souza who nearly caused a riot after booting Santos' Domingos. The Palmeiras number seven got into a harmless jostle with the bulky centreback.

Corinthians' 2-0 win the estádio Morumbi was more than enough to see Mano Menezes' team into the finals where they will face Santos.

The Parque São Jorge outfit arrived needing just a draw to go through but second-half goals from Douglas and Ronaldo gave Corinthians a deserved win against a São Paulo side bereft of creativity and fighting spirit.

Muricy Ramalho's Palmeiras came from behind to take all three points against Santos in the Vila Belmiro. The 3-1 win left the Palestra Itália outfit five clear at the top and even with 11 rounds to go, it's difficult to see anyone dislodging Palmeiras from their position as leaders.

Kléber Pereira comes to the rescue

For so long on Sunday it looked as if Portuguesa had done enough against Santo André to earn a place in the knock out phase of the Campeonato Paulista. Santos were struggling away to Ponte Preta until Kléber Pereira (who else) popped up with three goals to send his side into the next phase.
