Football: Axe to fall on five
By ERIC SAMUEL
PETALING JAYA: At least five players will be axed following the national football team's dismal
outing in the playing tour of Slovakia recently.
Malaysia lost three matches and drew one in the tour.
National material: Kedah striker Mohd Khyril Muhymeen (right) has been picked by national coach B.
The draw for the first qualifying round of the 2008-2009 UEFA Cup took place yesterday, which
ordinarily wouldn't have much significance at least as this site is concerned. This time around,
though, an English club will be taking part.
Manchester City are playing in this competition based on their exemplary fair play record last
season, not through their league position, and thus will have to start from the very beginning.
MLS teams began their CONCACAF Champions League campaigns with losses on the road. A near
full-strength New England Revolution team traveled all the way to Macoya, Trinidad and dropped a
2-1 decision to Joe Public (yes, that's the team's name)...

NBA all-star Dwight Howard, tennis star Ana Ivanovic and teen soccer star Jozy Altidore will be the
latest athletes to be featured in a Got milk? Effort. The effort will differ from past campaigns in
that it will promote chocolate milk as well as support milk's role in exercise recovery.
A new Newcastle United Supporters club has recently formed, which is comprised of various fanzines,
such as The Mag, true faith and nufc.com. The group is composed of veterans from various campaigns
such as "save our seats", "the magpie group" and a lot more, and

According to the latest news in the London Times, Chelsea are planning to make a world record
signing of Kaka from A.C. Milan. To me thats Kaka. With the amount of money they are going to spend
on 1 player who may still be in his prime, but also is nearing the end of it, they could be
rebuilding the entire squad for the multiple campaigns that they have to mount in England and
Europe.
Saturday Croatia and Kazakhstan kicked off their qualifying campaigns and Croatia started the best
possible way with a 3-0 win over Kazakhstan. The game was held at home in Zagreb, where a crowd of
25,000 packed the Makismir Stadium to cheer on their teams as they tackled the first obstacle ...
Talk about ruffling the feathers of your opponents. Sir Alex Ferguson is in his elements doing just
that. Luiz Felipe Scolari has barely banked in his fat paycheck at Chelsea, and Ferguson has
already given him a taste of things to come in upcoming campaigns. Call it a sparring match, if you
want, just to test [.
Seven-time European champion AC Milan began a rare foray into the UEFA Cup confidently Thursday,
and Tottenham secured its first win of the season in the first leg of the opening round.
Both teams have endured torrid starts to their league campaigns, but Milan beat FC Zurich 3-1
and Spurs secured a slender 2-1 advantage over Wisla Krakow.
Alexandre Guimaraes' dismissal wasn't the only coaching change around the region. Several managers
saw their contracts end as their national team's qualifying campaigns came to an end. Barbados' FA
released Eyre Sealy and Keith Griffith from their head coach and technical advisor positions,
respectively.
Crystal Palace in their ongoing fight to Premier League promotion has bolstered their back four
with the signing of Johannes "Johnny" Ertl. The twenty-five year old defender, who has
seven caps for Austria has spent the last two campaigns with Austria Wien and has been looking for
a change since
Safe to say Celtic acquired an amazing number of new fans after we were subjected to a Scottish
tribute to anti-football during last year's Champions League and UEFA Cup campaigns. One could find
giant pink diamonds easier than an attack at the Ibrox, and to make matters worse they made it all
the way to [.
With Arsene Wenger warning that no business will be done while he prepares for the start of both
the Champions League and Premier League campaigns for Arsenal, he didn't rule out that he still
would shop. One of the midfielders...

And they're off... in Europe at least. Most of the globe have started World Cup qualifying, but
this weekend sees the teams from Europe start their campaigns to qualify for the World Cup in South

Ryan Giggs today received an honoury degree from Salford Uni for his contribution to sport and

trio – but neither Javier Mascherano nor Lucas will feature against Standard Liege.
The Champions League qualifier comes too soon for the pair following their Beijing exploits, though
both are fighting for a place in the starting XI versus Aston Villa on Sunday.
Phil Thompson believes Liverpool will have few problems negotiating their way to the Champions
League knockout stages despite drawing one of the tougher groups.
Last night's official draw saw Rafael Benitez's men pitted against Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven,
French giants Olympique Marseille and Spanish up-and-comers Atletico Madrid in Group D.

Not much happening, to be honest.
We're at the very height of the Interlulll and you know things are slow when Arsene Wenger is
talking about international football. Still, Arsenal's star summer signing can help ease the blues
as he's going to be back from injury any time now.
Amaury Fishshop was signed from Werder Bremen for free (they even threw in all his plaster casts
and traction) and he's hopeful he'll be back in contention for a place in the squad soon.
