Ruud van Nistelrooy
A bit of good news everyone, although some may beg to differ with me. Arsene has ruled out a
move for one of the 'Greatest Cheats' in the history of the Premier League. We are in dire
needs of an established hit-man to marshal our attack, but not at the cost of buying
has-been's.
Not that there was ever much doubt but once his brilliant header flew past Edwin Van Der Sar in
the European Cup final Lionel Messi was always going to be this years recipient of the
Balon d'Or. The little genius from Argentina lit up European
football throughout season 2008-09, playing an instrumental role in Barcelona becoming the first
Spanish club to do the treble.
Will Forlán make it a hat-trick of Pichichis this season? (Photo: Phillippe Marcou)
Having delved earlier into the history behind Spain's prestigious Pichichi award, the obvious
question to consider now is - who will win this season's Pichichi? In part 2 of this Pichichi
special let's take a look at the Spanish Primera Liga's main candidates after 13 games played:
1) David Villa (Valencia / Spain)
With 11 goals so far this season David Villa has clearly not allowed the disappointment of last
summer's botched move out of Valencia to get the better of him.
A cobbled-together Argentina side visited the Camp Nou for the Catalán national side's annual
pre-Christmas friendly on Tuesday evening, and were soundly beaten as the home crowd enjoyed
jeering Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuaín. Lionel Messi didn't play, according to Carlos Bilardo
because his club, Barcelona, had requested that he shouldn't.
By Thomas Rooney Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos believes that his side played well enough to
earn at least a point against Barcelona on Sunday night at Camp Nou. Madrid went down 1-0 to their
rivals, losing their place at...
That's the rumor, anyway. According to Pavlyuchenko's agent, Arsenal are among the teams bidding
for the lanky Russian striker, who has thus far been a massive disappointment since arriving at
Spurs from Spartak Moscow.
It seems pretty unbelievable. (A) He plays for Spurs, our arch-rivals, and (B) he hasn't been
good enough to hack it there, so why would we go out and buy him?
Brazilian pledges his future at Eastlands, well sort of.

Manchester City's Brazilian forward Robinho has told BBC Sport that he sees his
long-term future at the club and denies that he is looking to move away.
Publicly tracked by Barcelona in the summer transfer window, Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano
has incited new transfer talk after rejecting a contract extension with Premier League side
Liverpool as reported by Sky Sports.
After expressing interest during the summer to play for the Blaugrana alongside countryman Lionel
Messi, the price tag placed on Mascherano proved to be too high for Barca's tastes.
The matches to watch after you realize Ian Holloway is right about Roy Keane's shark eyes being
the scariest thing ever.
Saturday
Chelsea v Everton at Stamford Bridge Both sides limp into this rematch of last season's
FA Cup final. Chelsea will hopefully try not to make Ancelotti "really, really mad" again.
Barcelona derby tonight will be FC Barcelona's last La Liga match of this year. The team will be
off to UAE to take part in FIFA World Club Championship. FC Barcelona currently have a five point
lead over Real Madrid who has played a game less. This is the best oppurtunity to increase or
maintain the lead.
FC Barcelona have made sure that they will end this year as winter champions with a 1-0 victory
over Espanyol in the first edition of local derby. Real Madrid meanwhile have won at Valencia
reducing the lead to five points, they will have a chance to further reduce the lead to two points
while we are away in UAE for FIFA Club World Championship.
partido malo, malo, malo.
In the rare moments when we are not picking up awards here at EFW, we like to dish them out
ourselves. Following the relative success of our 2008 ceremony, we had a little think tank here at
EFW Towers and decided that we should end the year with a look back on 2009. Why change a winning
formula!? So, without further ado, roll up and enjoy the 2009 EFW Awards:
Highlight of 2009
Take 32 lads from all around Europe, add in four games of football in two different countries in
three days and enough beer to sink a small battleship and that - in a nutshell -was the inaugural
EFW Oktoberfest.
Barcelona overcame derby rivals Espanyol 1-0 at Camp Nou, while Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-2 at La
Mestalla in Saturday's La Liga action.
Mallorca continued their push for a European place with a win over Osasuna, while there were also
wins for Sevilla, Getafe and Villarreal in Sunday's La Liga action.
This could lead to a heated debate as the implications transcend beyond choosing the best club
to include the competitive nature of some of Europe's top leagues (namely the English Premier
League, the Spanish la Liga and Italian Serie A). English and Italian fans may disagree but
Barcelona's players have clearly staked a claim to the title of the best club in 2009 considering
they have won the treble- la Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League of course.
olabilir?
I missed to write about the Champions league draw. FC Barcelona got one of the easiest pairing with
Stuttgart as opponent. No offence meant to Stuttgart fans and players, but there was a potential
chance of facing bayern, AC Milan or Lyon. The first leg of the tie takes place in Stuttgart on
23rd of February and the reaturn leg will take place in Camp Nou on 17th of March.
Former FC Barcelona coach Johan Cruyff marked his return to the sidelines by leading Catalonia (or
Catalunya) to a 4-2 victory over FIFA World Cup-bound Argentina today at the Camp Nou. Sergio
Garcia, Bojan Krkic, Sergio Gonzalez and Moises Hurtado scored for the Barcelona player-laden
Catalans in front of 53,000 spectators that included Argentina coach Diego [.
The coaching carousel seems to move faster in European football then just about any other sport
these days. And now La Liga top manager Pep Guardiola's Barca future may be in jeopardy. No
the coach isn't getting sacked, but actually he is the gossip item of a possible move away from
Camp Nou.
