An update on Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o's Cup of Nations situation. As reported in yesterday's
entry, Barcelona and Cameroon have been arguing over when the star striker would report to
Cameroon's pre-Cup camp in Burkina Faso.
The awful situation in Kenya has forced Cameroon's national team to cancel their high altitude
training in Kenya ahead of this month's African Cup of Nations in Ghana.
The Indomitable Lions were scheduled to arrive in Nairobi on Sunday for a 10-day training camp.
They were also expected to play the Kenya national team in an international friendly but they have
canceled the tour due to post-election violence that has rocked the country and left at least 300
people dead.
Day 3 of the African Cup of Nations didn't disappoint.
First off, defending champions Egypt routed pre-tournament favorites Cameroon 4-2. Striker Mohamed
Zidan scored a double and Hosni Abd Rabou also struck twice for the five-times African champions
with Samuel Eto'o netting Cameroon's two at the Baba Yara stadium.
Samuel Eto'o is the king of African football.
Today he became the highest scorer in Cup of Nations history when he converted a penalty in a 3-0
win over Sudan in their group finale.
The Indomitable Lions finish second in Group C behind Egypt with six points to go through to the
quarterfinals.
As squads begin training for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, two stories of the age-old club
vs. country row that affects football from time to time.
This year, the situation's been magnified by the timing of the Cup of Nations. With more Africans
playing in major football leagues, the mass exodus of players for up to six weeks is worrying big
clubs like Chelsea of England and Barcelona of Spain.
Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o became the top scorer in African Cup of Nations finals history today
when he converted his second PK of the tournament in the 28th minute, and Cameroon benefited from a
Sudanese own goal just six minutes later and went on to win 3-0. Eto'o also scored again right
before the end of the game to add to his now-record count of 16 tallies.
The venues are being scrubbed clean, the tickets are printed and the cities are bubbling with
anticipation.
The African Cup of Nations is but a mere 2 weeks and 2 days away from taking over the minds and
hearts of football fans around the globe.
Cup finalists begin their pre-tournament preparations in earnest this weekend, led by defending
champions Egypt who host Namibia in a friendly.
Samuel Eto'o converted a PK in the 66th minute to draw even with Ivory Coast legend Laurent Pokou
for most goals scored (14) in the African Cup of Nations finals and Joseph Job bagged a brace to
propel Cameroon over Zambia 5-1 yesterday. This was a game Cameroon absolutely needed to win after
their opening loss to Egypt and the Indomitable Lions took care of business.
