It began with a burst of colour, song and dance. People cheered and admired the entertainment on
offer. The longing anticipation only added to the fervour, for in Ghana it had been a long time
coming. There were roars of approval, cacophonies of laughter and a hubbub of enthusiastic noise.
You could feel the electricity in the Accra air.

One of the players who really caught my eye at this year's Africa Cup of Nations was Mohamad Zidan,
of Egypt. He scored two fine goals against Cameroon in the group stages, and although he played

Alain Nkong has been journeyman his whole career (a still young one at that, only 28 years old). He
was in his native Cameroon for a while, then Portugal, Spain, Portugal again, then Uruguay, and
then the Colorado Rapids. While with the Rapids, he played well enough to be kept around for a
couple years [.

An update on Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o's Cup of Nations situation. As reported in yesterday's
entry, Barcelona and Cameroon have been arguing over when the star striker would report to
Cameroon's pre-Cup camp in Burkina Faso.
The Olympics are less than a week away, but the football tournament will kick off with the start of

The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China are but a few weeks away.
The men's Olympic Football Tournament looks like it will be a hotly contested competition, with
countries like Argentina, Holland and the United States seeking Olympic gold.
Africa will be well represented with three formidable squads in the 16-team tournament for the gold
medal.
Talk about unexpected.
I saw a Ghana-Ivory Coast African Cup of Nations final happening no matter what.
How could Cameroon stop the Black Stars on their home turf? How could Egypt defend their title
against the hungry Ivorian Elephants, who wanted revenge from their loss against the Pharaohs in
the 2006 final?
And believe it or not, it's a surprise to many. That's odd considering it is the defending
champions - Egypt - vs. Cameroon, a common participant in the African Cup of Nations final. Think
about the strength and consistency of both Ivory Coast and Ghana this tournament. Ghana had the
host nation effect working for it, [.
First off, congratulations to Ghana, who came from behind to claim a consolation third-place finish
at the African Cup of Nations after beating Ivory Coast in a six-goal thriller, 4-2.
Sulley Muntari's swerving 25-yard free-kick gave Ghana the lead on 10 minutes before Ivorian
Boubacar Sanogo hit back with a quick-fire brace.

No hubo sorpresa y los "Faraones", con seis copas, tienen el récord de títulos en 26 ediciones de
esta competición continental, habiendo ganado también la primera en el año 1957 y la anterior,
en 2006 (además de las de 1959, 1986 y 1998).

Dynamos FC of Zimbabwe and Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon made it through to the final four of the
2008 African Champions League this weekend, with crucial wins in their respective final group
games. In Harare, Dynamos took on Egyptian giants Zamalek knowing a win would send them through to
the semi-finals regardless of results elsewhere.
Cotonsport Garoua were only founded twenty-two years ago but have come on leaps and bounds in
African football during that short period and go into the final of the 2008 CAF African Champions
League looking to make history by winning their first ever continental trophy. However the task at
hand could hardly be more daunting given their opponents.
Who knew that obtaining Samuel Eto'o's shirt would cost so much money?
The story begins here: Tanzania lost a hard-fought encounter against Cameroon 2-1 in recent World
Cup qualifying. Tanzanian defender Nadir Haroub gave away his jersey to Cameroon star Samuel Eto'o

The awful situation in Kenya has forced Cameroon's national team to cancel their high altitude
training in Kenya ahead of this month's African Cup of Nations in Ghana.
The Indomitable Lions were scheduled to arrive in Nairobi on Sunday for a 10-day training camp.
They were also expected to play the Kenya national team in an international friendly but they have
canceled the tour due to post-election violence that has rocked the country and left at least 300
people dead.

Day 3 of the African Cup of Nations didn't disappoint.
First off, defending champions Egypt routed pre-tournament favorites Cameroon 4-2. Striker Mohamed
Zidan scored a double and Hosni Abd Rabou also struck twice for the five-times African champions
with Samuel Eto'o netting Cameroon's two at the Baba Yara stadium.
Samuel Eto'o is the king of African football.
Today he became the highest scorer in Cup of Nations history when he converted a penalty in a 3-0
win over Sudan in their group finale.
The Indomitable Lions finish second in Group C behind Egypt with six points to go through to the
quarterfinals.
Egypt vs Angola just has such a charming nature about it. African football's superpower versus the
new kid on the block. The most successful team in Cup of Nations history against a nation making
only their fourth ever appearance. The current champions taking on a side that has never before
made the knockout phase.
What happened to the Ghana vs Ivory Coast dream final? Well, it's off, that's what. Here's how:

Samuel Eto'o could become the third Barcelona player called up by his country to play in next

While we lament the loss of the Nigerian Super Falcons in the Women's Olympic football tournament,

The African qualifying groups for World Cup 2010 are always a particular favourite of mine, as they
are rarely predictable and - as things get tense - there are often accusations and
counter-accusations of cheating, voodoo and bribery. Unfortunately, this time around the seeding of
the teams will most likely make things a little more predictable.
Ghana were oh-so-close to getting the job done, to making their way to the African Cup of Nations
final on their home soil.
But with their 1-0 loss to Cameroon in yesterday's semi-final, all those dreams came tumbling down.
Hard.
Today, a report from BBC News about the emotional aftermath of yesterday's loss.
Egypt defended their 2006 African Cup of Nations championship successfully today in a 1-0 victory
over Cameroon, giving the Pharaohs a record 6th continental title.
It was a rematch of the opening game in Group C, a 4-2 Egyptian victory. Mohamed Zidan scored twice
in that game for the winners and his success against Cameroon continued today.
Egypt celebrates as Mohamed Aboutreika's 77th minute strike seals their 6th African Cup of Nations
triumph. His goal was the 99th in the tournament, the highest number of goals scored in any Cup of
Nations in history, handing Egypt a 1-0 win over Cameroon and prompting wild celebrations in the
streets of Cairo.
The men's Olympic football tournament will be one of the most highly anticipated sporting events of
the upcoming 2008 Beijing Games.
This year's tournament features three teams from Africa, with Cameroon, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast
sending over their young, developing talent in hopes of Olympic glory.
