Talk about a great honor!
Barcelona star Samuel Eto'o was unveiled as the face of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa on
Friday.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Friday unveiled the poster for the first tournament to be staged in
Africa.
An image of the Cameroonian striker about to head a football, his face and neck superimposed on a
map of Africa, will form the center piece of the publicity campaign for the tournament.
We knew this would boil over at some point. The old 'club-vs.-country' debate.
Who is it more important to play for: the club that pays your bills? Or the country that feeds your
passions?
Word comes out of Spain today that Barcelona are looking to keep currently injured Cameroonian
striker Samuel Eto'o from playing in next year's African Cup of Nations.
Life has taken its toll and I haven't been posting as much as I want. Too much to do, not enough
time to do it.
But enough about me. Let's catch up with some news. This item comes from the BBC and writer Ben
Wyatt. It's about Portsmouth and their African contingent. To read the full article, please click
here! The following is an excerpt of the enlightening article.
Japan 2, Cameroon 0
Russia 2, Poland 2 - the first two goals are great headers while the third goal by Poland's
Krzynowek is a screamer and the fourth is a cheeky finish
Ukraine 1, Uzbekistan 0 - Hladkiy
Ukraine 2, Uzbekistan 0 - Rotan
I couldn't find the Uzbekistan goal by Geynrih, but the final tally was the Ukraine 2-1.
We here at 2010 haven't looked at the FIFA world rankings in some time now. They're released every
month, so let's take a peek and see where our friends in Africa rank with the world powers.
The Top Five of the August 2007 ranking are a Who's Who of world footballing giants, with Brazil
ranked #1, followed by Argentina, 2006 winners Italy, 2006 finalists France and 2006 hosts Germany.
Three tidbits on the world of African football from your hard-working friend at this blog, who's
still wondering how he'll end up in Johannesburg for the Final.
- The crime situation in South Africa continues to be an issue as the World Cup Finals approach in
three years time.
Data from the South African Police Service released on Tuesday showed murders, carjackings and bank
robberies rose in South Africa in the past 12 months, dealing a blow to efforts to reduce one of
the world's highest crime rates before the country hosts the Finals.
Ah, International friendlies, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. On Wednesday about half
the countries of the world are participating in potential FIFA ranking boosters as they steal
countrymen from their clubs and send fans into worrisome frenzies about whether or not their star
players will return unscathed. A lot of the matches have the potential to be quite entertaining.
Life has once again intervened in my blogging endeavors.
But I'm back with some updates on South Africa's progress on the Road to the 2010 World Cup.
World Cup organizer Danny Jordaan (above) briefed the South African High Commission in London a few
days back and said the state of tournament organization is very good. Everything is on track for a
successful World Cup come 2010.
Japan 2, Cameroon 0. No, I didn't get to see this match and from the looks of the score, I doubt
I'll bother trying. Looks as if either jet lag got to the Indomitable Lions or Osim played the
trump card and put everyone behind the ball. I'm gonna guess a mixture of both. The scorers for the
Daihyo were Tanaka in the 25th minute and Yamase in the 90th.
The FIFA Under-17 World Cup is turning into an African talent show, with both Ghana and Nigeria
advancing to the semifinals of the all-star event.
The Nigerian Golden Eagles will face Germany in Wednesday's semi-finals after the Europeans
thrashed their rivals England 4-1 in a quarter-final match on Sunday. Nigeria defeated Argentina,
2-0.
African players showed talent and agility this weekend on the world stage, scoring epic goals and
stunning volleys around the European leagues.
The most memorable goal of the weekend goes to Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor. His strike capped a 3-1
victory for Arsenal in their north London derby clash at Tottenham Hotspur, his unstoppable volley
whizzing past England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
Finally, a superstar player has come out to say he's definitely playing in the upcoming African Cup
of Nations.
Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, who plies his trade for FC Barcelona, has committed to play for
Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations in January, according to reports in the Spanish media.
Spanish sports daily MARCA reported that Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain had met
earlier this week with the player's representative Jose Maria Mesalles to discuss the issue.
The world's most popular league gets back into gear tomorrow when The English Premiership starts
play with matches around the country. The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal begin
their quest for the championship of England and glory in Europe.
As you know, many of the best African footballers ply their trade in England.
I've been up since 5 A.M. previewing international friendlies that are, in the very least,
interesting and may be entertaining to watch as well. Here's a recap of those previews.
Japan vs Cameroon - I'm confused. Now it'll be on at 6:45 AM EST? Okay, well, if that's the case,
with my sleeping habits, or lack thereof, I should be able to catch this one.
This, straight from the Reuters wire ...
Cameroon's Daniel Ngom Kome and Albert Meyong Ze will miss the 2008 African Nations Cup after being
suspended from international duty for six months for partying ahead of a qualifier.
Sports Minister Augustin Edjoa said in a statement dated Monday that the ban was for "indiscipline
shown on the occasion of the final qualifying match" between Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon on
Sept.

Samuel Eto'o is one of Africa's brightest stars.
But he doesn't know if he'll play in next year's African Cup of Nations.
"I will play where they tell me to. I am not the boss," Eto'o said in an interview with Spanish
daily Sport on Friday.
"I can't do anything. I understand the club's worries but I also understand my country's concerns.
Cameroon's Pierre Achille Webo had an operation on his right foot Tuesday and will be sidelined for
up to four months. This is bad news for the Cameroon squad ahead of next month's African Cup of
Nations.
Webo was injured during a game with his Spanish club side Real Mallorca, a goalless draw at home to
Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
The African Champions League took place this week but we're going to focus instead on the 'little
brother' of African continental competitions, the Confederations Cup.
Here's a quick re-cap of this weekend's African Confederations Cup action, thanks to our friends at
the BBC.
A Nigerian club coach had to be rescued by police and another quit on a disastrous weekend for the
country in the Confederation Cup.
The African Champions League isn't the only game in town this weekend.
The African Confederations Cup gets ready to crown two finalists for their grand championship game
this weekend, as well.
CS Sfaxien of Tunisia and El Merreikh of Sudan could clinch places in the big games this
weekend.
In Group A, Sfaxien must beat Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in Pretoria to be certain of making
the final.
