Brian Ching is not the answer: Ching scored twice, but one was a deflection off of his back from a
Pablo Mastroeni shot (yes, you read that right). You can score two goals by accident if you play
ninety minutes up top against Barbados. I mean, Eddie Johnson even scored in a ten-minute cameo.
Ching just wasn't at the same level as the rest of the US attack and you could see it when at lot
of the attacks broke down once the ball was played to him.
Before I really begin this post let me preface it by saying, "no one is asking". By that
I mean I know that no one is asking me what I think MLS should do in regard to signing players nor
would I ever feign being qualified to tell anyone over there what to look for in a player. I say
this because I don't want this post to come across like one of those that you read on some other
blogs where a guy who's got less access and insight than the janitor at HDC tells you who Chivas
USA should sign, so please don't take it too seriously.
Well, yesterday was certainly an interesting day with a match, a look at new boy Nasri and a new
signing which sparked plenty of debate.
Let's start with the football and a 3-1 win over Stuttgart continued our pre-season preparations
(Arsenalist has the goals and highlights).
Clinging to the final MLS playoff spot with six games to go, DC United has received word that
designated player Marcelo Gallardo will be out of action for at least two more weeks due to
complications from sports hernia surgery. The former River Plate man has decided to return home to
Argentina to begin rehabbing the injury, which was operated on back in mid-July.
...with a special late cameo from Cuauhtemoc Blanco!
Yes, it certainly did make for compelling theater at the MD Soccerplex on Tuesday night, with
twists, turns and thrills galore. Three goals, six yellow cards, two reds, and 120 minutes of
end-to-end soccer, played with urgency and intensity that outshined the long stretches when real
quality was lacking.
The Roar came out at full speed for the first 20 minutes and could have had 3 or 4 goals early. As
we know, the Roar are at their best this way. Very entertaining for the crowd of 14,000. (Photos
are 'the game stops for Thomas Oar' and 'Charlie Miller about to surprise and delight').
The first half was a showcase for new strikers Sergio van Dijk (very strong in the air and with the
ball to his feet - put a left footed swivel turn just over the bar from outside the box) and Tim
Smits (good in the air, scored a looping header and looked fast enough to cause an A-League defence
havoc - but slowed into the 2nd half) and full back Luke DeVere (great in the air but with clearly
a lot to learn about controlling strikers and their runs).
Luis wrote a post-game article that included a Kyle Beckerman quote, but he left out the Nick
Rimando cameo.
Luis and I were part of a group of reporters around Kyle in the locker room. Just as Kyle said his
bit about Edson taking advantage of an inch of space, Nick walked by.
"He got more than an inch," the goalkeeper asserted.
Blackburn 0-4 Arsenal
Is there a better way to warm up for an arduous trip to the Ukraine than to thump Blackburn
4-0?
It's funny, because you could argue 4-0 was generous to Arsenal; the last two goals were classic
late game-killers and Blackburn caused our defence a fair amount of problems all day.
"The story of the blind man" has as the main punchline Blanco changing his sign from
"I'm blind, have compassion" to "They offered me work as a ref, but I prefer to be
an honest beggar." A former MLS player makes a cameo - who can name him?
It was a funny comment attributed to Frank Farina in the Courier Mail today. It was suggested that
the pre-season cup should be scrapped because it exposed players to suspensions for the real
A-League season. Craig Moore's send off yesterday was the case in point. However, John Kosmina
could be running this argument with 3 off on suspension (1 red and two - two yellows for the
pre-season cup).
You might not see this guy again for a while.
He had a brief -- very brief -- cameo in the Olympics, but he might be gone for a while.
Out of favor with Derby and the odd man out in a crowded USMNT midfield means Feilhaber will need
to lip-sync some more pop songs to stay relevant.
