A couple of hours after Lanús confirmed their participation in the Copa Libertadores with a win,
Arsenal de Sarandí did the same in spite of a defeat. Their 2-0 home victory in the first leg
proved enough for the Copa Sudamericana holders, as Mineros de Guyana could only manage a 2-1 win
in Venezuela.
Take a deep breath everyone... COMPETITIVE FOOTBALL IS BACK! Arsenal de Sarandí played the first
meaningful match featuring an Argentine top-flight side of 2008, in their first ever game in the
Copa Libertadores. It was a good start, too - they beat Mineros de Guyana of Venezuela 2-0 in El
Vidaucto in the first leg [.
Real Madrid's love affair with Brazilian footballers seems to be slowly coming to an end. At its
height, back in Florentino Pérez's last season as club president, the squad boasted five
Brazilians in its ranks: Roberto Carlos, Cicinho, Baptista, Robinho and Ronaldo. As of today, with
the sale of Julio Baptista to Roma for €12 million, this number now stands at two: Robinho
and Marcelo.
The Futbolitis blog is an excellent resource for those interested in a deeper analysis both of
tactics and the politics of football, without many of the rumours ans sensationalism associated
with more traditional media. As the articles are written in Spanish, I thought I would share some
of the highlights of the item that was published earlier today regarding one of Ramón
Calderón's broken electoral promises when he became Real Madrid president: Ricardo Izecson dos
Santos Leite, better known the World over as Kaká.
An extra treat this week, because the goals from the lower divisions have been put online by TN as
well - something they do sometimes and not at others. For the Primera A goals of the weekend, all
twenty-two of them, including an absolutely unbelievable one from José Sand for Lanús
(the first of his [.
You cannot pick up an issue of either the British or the Madrid sports press without reading some
story about Cristiano Ronaldo's proposed transfer to Real Madrid, each more outlandish than the
last: 80 million euros, 50 million euros plus Ramos, Diarra and Robinho, 30 million euros plus a
treasure map to the mythical Eldorado (only one of those is made up).
He's been called President Pinocchio, Tourettes and Motormouth (that last one's mine), but if there
has been one person on Ramón Calderón's case since he became Real Madrid president, that
is José Antonio Abellán, a journalist and presenter of the popular late-night radio
sports programme El Tirachinas.
Raúl and Casillas received a St. Valentine's day present from Real Madrid when they linked what is
likely to be the remainder of their playing careers to the club by agreeing contract extensions at
lunchtime today. Under the terms of the agreement, Raúl's contract was extended until 2011 (when
he will be 35) and Casillas until 2017 (when he will be 36).
Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón gave his support to the Levante striking players in
a radio interview, describing the situation as "sad, because the players have shown
professionalism, honesty and dignity playing a great many games when they had not been paid. They
have beaten sides who did not have those worries and that have all my respect, affection and
support and that of Real Madrid.
If after winning two consecutive league titles, Ramón Calderón cannot ease through his
desired reforms to the club's statutes, it is hard to see whether he will ever be able to. At
today's Extraordinary General Assembly, the proposals were heavily rejected (by 682 votes to 150,
with 34 abstentions) by the current raft of socios compromisarios.
Often, when looking at a club's assets, one tends to concentrate on the players, the ground,
sometimes on the manager and technical staff. Rarely do we look closely at those people who
actually run the club. And in Real's case that is not president Ramón Calderón. Four
years ago, when Florentino Pérez was still president of Real Madrid and pursuing his
galáctico policy, the club's then director
The second leg of the Copa Sudamericana semi-final between Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes de La
Plata was as all reasonable people expected it to be. That is, after Argentinos' first team
thrashed Estudiantes' reserves 5-0 in the league on Sunday, it was evident to all that Estudiantes
would advance from the semi.
It's hard to win a game where they score against you in the first few minutes of each half,
said Guti, summing up the impotence felt by Real Madrid at Getafe.
More importantly, it illustrates why the recent mini-run of two 1-0 victories (against Recreativo
and BATE) was a mirage and bodes extremely badly for the next lot of league games against the
top-placed teams.
It's hard to know what to believe. Almost since Ramn Caldern became Real Madrid president, one
Jos Antonio Abelln, a journalist and presenter of the popular late-night radio sports programme
El Tirachinas has been conducting a relentless campaign accusing him of all manner of
irregularities and possibly even illegalities in his running of the club.
Mallorca, the team responsible for dumping Real out of the first of three competitions this season,
caused motormouth president Calderón to ask for help from on high (presumably the Spanish
Federation and referees are not trustworthy enough): "I am afraid of all our opponents.
It's very hard to win in Mallorca an I'm very happy with the draw because this point could prove to
be very important at the end of the season.
Real Madrid's new-look website (welcome at last to the 21st century!), under the headline
"Exercise in transparency", spells out in full the club's PR response to the allegations
a couple of weeks ago about irregularities in the selection of socios compromisarios by
Calderón and his associates.
The running of a football club involves a lot more than those elements that the ordinary fans are
concerned with on a day-to-day basis: players on form, or injured, competition standings, what the
rivals are up to, who's going to be bought or sold. Occasionally fans look more closely at
institutional or financial matters, to see whether the club will have enough money for players or
new
After the Annual General Meeting in December 2006 ended with no changes to the shambolic electoral
process that blighted the last presidential election, a "Reform Commission" was set up in
June 2007 to look at redrafting the club's statutes. It is particularly appropriate that they
should choose this week to present their findings and proposals, given the recent controversy about
the selection of
The whole of Real Madrid's transfer policy for the summer is predicated on what happens in the
Cristiano Ronaldo saga, according to Ramón Calderón. Not that this is surprising: if the
figures of 90 million euros or thereabouts are to be believed, it's clear Real will find it hard to
make any decisions on what happens to other players, whether incoming or outgoing, until this is
resolved.
Bernd Schuster has never been one to mince his words and he has once again shown that he has not
learned to keep his counsel when perhaps discretion was called for. In today's press conference to
recap the first 10 days of preseason training, he sent a pretty direct message to the club's
sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic, about the way he has been kept informed of the club's
movements in the transfer market.
As the Real Madrid squad fly out to Colombia for a (presumably) lucrative friendly against
Independiente de Santa Fé, the news filtered out that the long-running saga around Cristiano
Ronaldo is over, at least for this summer.
In an interview with Portuguese daily Publico (reproduced in full and translated to English
in The Guardian), the Manchester United winger finally declared his desire to "fight
and honour the shirt with the same desire and dedication I always have".
In a week where the various international fixtures mean there is little in the way of Liga
to talk about, the Madrid sports dailies try to entice punters to buy their wares with a
tried-and-tested strategy: transfer talk. Never mind that it's only six weeks since the transfer
window closed, As continue to carp on about Benzema and Marca have wheeled out Bernd
Schuster to stoke the flames surrounding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
How much more can Ramón Calderón take before he decides that enough is enough and he
packs his bags? It's not been an easy few days for the president of Real Madrid, continuously
dogged by issues that have nothing to do with the team's sporting results.
Last week he had to contend with the announcement by Juan Villalonga that he would seek the
presidency of the club at the next election, scheduled to take place by 2010.
Motormouth Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón took advantage of an interview on the
financial TV channel Intereconomía Televisión to announce the club's general
assembly will be on December 7th and to criticise former president Florentino Pérez for
leaving the club.
"He is the only president in the history of the club who left half way through a
season.
It's obvious, but perhaps it needs to be stated from time to time, and Xavi, the Barcelona and
Spain midfielder put it succinctly the other day when he said that "Barça and Real are
like a set of scales, when things go well for one, they go badly for the other, and
viceversa".
Just think back six months: Real Madrid were running rampant in a league championship they
eventually won with an eighteen-point lead over Barcelona.
There are a number of traditions regarding the opening of presents for those who celebrate
Christmas. The earliest presents are opened on St. Nicholas' Day on December 6th in Holland,
Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and some other European countries.
In most other countries, presents are opened on Christmas morning.
The feelgood factor generated for Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón by the signing of
Jan-Klaas Huntelaar lasted barely twenty-four hours as his youth categories director tendered his
resignation and blasted him for his "lack of knowledge or interest in the youth
teams".
Calderón, who had already hinted at another possible transfer announcement in advance of the
club's Annual General meeting on Sunday may not find it so easy to dismiss the comments made by
former Real Madrid player José Miguel González Martín del Campo, or Míchel, as
he is best known.
In hindsight, it was almost inevitable. Ramón Calderón survived a fractious AGM on Sunday
and bought himself the time he needed to try to steer a new course before the ship that is Real
Madrid is hauled into dock for a complete refit.
As it is, the sacking of Bernd Schuster and installation of Juande Ramos as caretaker coach is like
careening the vessel at high tide to scour the hull: a superficial short-term fix that may do
little to change the club's fortunes this season.
