Darren Bentley of Burnley Football Club is chronicling the his team's summer training trip to the
United States. The team arrived in Cary yesterday afternoon and got a chance to check out their
Thursday competition at the RailHawks U23s match on Tuesday night. Here's some excerpts from
Bentley's letter to the Burnley fans:
Hours after arriving in Cary ourselves, it would have been easy to call it a
night.
When Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley FC have visited Cary over the last couple of years, our
supporters club has hosted their traveling fans for some social events before and after those
matches. Fans from both clubs expressed genuine amazement at how friendly we were towards visiting
supporters.

Burnley FC have started their summer training here in Cary, NC with a workout this morning on
Fields 2 & 3 at WakeMed Soccer Park. I was all set to go out and shoot photos of the practice but
my camera broke last night while shooting the U23s v.Dynamo match. Luckily David Vaught bailed me
out and managed a few snaps of their practice.
One game down, forty-five to go as far as the 24 teams in the Championship is concerned, but what
did the opening weekend of fixtures tell us? Many regard Doncaster's 1-0 win at Derby as the
performance of the weekend, but that's only working on the assumption that Rovers were playing
League One football last [.
Northern Ireland's Glentoran FC recently announced three pre-season friendlies for the month of
July.
Beginning Monday July 14th, Hearts, the Scottish Premier side, journeys to The Oval. Glentoran last
played the Edinburgh club in 1899 which was 109 years ago. Hearts won by a score of a 3-0.
The prospect of a fixture congestion has loosened its grip on several of Europe's household names
as the continent's heavyweights bowed out of their domestic cup competitions. The phenomenon of the
underdog has struck again in Spain, France and England as the reigning champions of each nation
have been crushed in their search for their first silverware of the season.
Irish midfielder James O'Connor has switched Championship sides moving from
Burnley FC to Sheffield Wednesday. He declined an offer from the Turf Moor outfit deciding instead
to move via free transfer to The Owls. The 28-year-old midfielder played a key role in Burnley's
season after being returned to the starting eleven for the 2007-2008 campaign.
Ahead of the RailHawks U23s v. Burnley FC international friendly set for Thursday, July 10th, I
spent some time with Dan Jewell at 2br, 99.8 FM, a local radio station in Burnley talking about
what the RailHawks, the facilities at WakeMed Soccer Park, and what the Burnley players and
supporters can expect to find here in Cary later this week.
Cary RailHawks U23 captain Darrius Barnes has been named to the Premier Development League
All-Conference team for the Southern Conference. Barnes, who is a rising senior at Duke University
and a Raleigh native, also received the same honor in 2006.
In 2008, Barnes logged more minutes (1253 in 15 matches) than any other U23 player and finished the
season with 1 assist.
