WHILE the lavish spending of the Premier League's big boys captured most of the limelight on
transfer deadline day, there was also plenty of business done in the second tier. James McMath
looks at some eye-catching signings made by Championship clubs.
When it comes down to it, there are several categories which are splitting the Championship
equally. The resurgence of the newly promoted teams is wowing everybody and shows that you do not
have to spend large sums to get success. Unlike their Premier League counterparts, they do not have
millions to spare and could prove to be tricky.
Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing will not be joining Burnley on loan when the window re-opens for
clubs in the Football League.
The young midfielder, who gained a handful of first team opportunities at Liverpool under Kenny
Dalglish last term, has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield after a handful of arrivals in the
transfer window.
Bolton manager Owen Coyle has dismissed suggestions that there will be any tension for him at
the Emirates Stadium this weekend when Bolton visit fellow strugglers Arsenal.
Both clubs have performed below their capabilities thus far in the season and while Arsenal
could have done much better with the services of a proven English center-back such as the Trotters'
Gary Cahill, a war of words between the two managers brought an end to the negotiations last
month.

Stoke The League Two side Aldershot Town have drawn Manchester United at home in the stand-out tie
of the fourth-round draw of the Carling Cup.
Arsenal have been handed a home draw at Emirates Stadium against Bolton Wanderers in the Fourth
Round of the Carling Cup.
The Gunners secured their passage to this stage of the competition with a 3-1 victory over
Shrewsbury at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
Bolton made it to the Fourth Round with a 2-0 win at Aston Villa.
