A few more players were added to Santa's naughty list in Week 4 and are set to miss out
on featuring for their sides this week's fixtures. Others are finally back after serving bans from
Week 1, while one player is back on the bad list for a second time after just a few weeks.
Here's who will not be playing this week:
Joe Cole (AM) is back in action!
Last week, Arsene Wenger yet again accused another team of intentionally going after his players in
an attempt to take them out of the game. This time Sam Allardyce and Blackburn Rovers were his foil
(at other points Stoke have been one of his targets, too). As I read them, Wenger's comments had
the feel of "bad teams aren't good enough to compete with us, so they will just foul us to keep up.
In the last few days, I've been thinking about ways of measuring and displaying defensive
production at the level of teams. It's been helpful to think and read about the performance of
individual players, especially in related team sports like hockey, but I figured it'd be nice to
get a handle on things just by looking at overall team performance.

One of the most extraordinary goals that Liam Brady scored for Arsenal was on December 23, 1978.
And of all teams, it was against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the north London derby.
The 1978-79 season saw the return of Tottenham to the top flight, but Spurs were buoyed by the
addition of Argentina stars Ossie Ardiles and Ricardo Villa.
"Six In A Row" screams the Edinburgh Evening News back page.
A headline that doesn't refer to Hibs' current losing run at home.
Rather the club have announced better news. A sixth consecutive year of profit.
Given the troubles facing Scottish football this is a fine record.
The miracle of Turf Moor
It is hard to take positives from a game in which you throw away a 3-1 lead in the final ten
minutes but Preston should be encouraged by the majority of their performance. Winger Keith Treacy
was outstanding.
As for Burnley, they were limp, lacklustre and completely reliant on the brilliance of Chris
Iwelumo.
On the eighth of September 1888, on the opening day of the Football League in England, Preston
North End beat Burnley by five goals to two in their first match of ther season. It was the start
of the year of The Invincibles, the Preston side that ran away with the Football League
championship by eleven points.

I ran this as a regular feature last year and I don't see any reason for it not to continue. I
find it interesting at least. Same premise as before, which was explained in #01 if it's not
immediately obvious, the only change being the mapping of the three promoted and three relegated
teams:-
- Newcastle = Burnley
- WBA = Hull
- Portsmouth = Blackpool
That reflects their finishing positions in the respective leagues.

First of all, I am very sorry for my ridiculously long absence. I have been very busy in my
personal life, but I also have been making time for this blog. Apologies all round.
To fully understand the implications of this match you need a little background, which some
newcomers will lack.
The League Cup has picked up an air of youth in the past as most Premier League sides
took their cue from Arsene Wenger and Arsenal and used the cup competition as a showcase for
youngsters. Most sides this time around rested key players, but for some big sides, that left the
door open for some shocking scorelines.
One by one, some of the big boys of English soccer fell by the wayside against lower-tier
competition in the third round of Carling Cup action this week.
On Tuesday it was Everton, which was stunned in penalty kicks by League One side Brentford, and
Bolton, which fell, 1-0, to Burnley.
United Soccer Leagues - A Fine Footballing Life
After Everton, Heath would be on the move for the rest of his playing career, joining up with
Kendall again when he made his move into coaching as an assistant and player for Sheffield United.
Short spells in charge of another former club Burnley and the Blades didn't offer much chance for
him to show what he could be capable of.
