The country of Rwanda hosts the CAF African Under-17 Championship from today as eight countries fight it out not only for the continental title but also for one of the four available places in the FIFA Under-17 World Championship which takes place in Mexico this summer.

The African U-17 Championship has existed in its current form since 1995 and takes place every two years.

The semi-final line-up in the CAF Under-17 Championship in Rwanda has been decided. The four semi-finalists already have the pleasure of having qualified for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup so they will all take to the field this week in the hope of becoming continental champions.

Hosts Rwanda are amongst the final four after finishing second in Group A just behind Burkina Faso on goal difference.

Cote D'Ivoire topped defending champion Gambia 4-1 and Congo defeated Mali 2-1 to reach the semifinals of the CAF U-17 Championship, and with that, a berth to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

When you think of African football, a few nations come to mind first. Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Togo, etc. One that would come much later down that list for most of us is Burkina Faso. The senior side has never reached a World Cup, and aside from a 4th place finish in 1998, have never gotten past the first round of the African Cup of Nations.
