It is that time of year again. Time for European leagues to kick off and time for American
players to ply their trade throughout Europe (and Mexico).
This week marked the first week for the English Premier League and German Bundesliga, meaning
several names joined the list of Americans playing abroad.
If you follow German football a bit more than casually, you almost certainly know the name Patrick
Helmes. If you've paid attention to Die Mannschaft callup sheets even sporadically, you've probably
seen his name. But Patrick hasn't become a household name quite yet. Having spent the last two
years in the Bundesliga.
March is finally here and we're deep into the heart of the domestic season. Many of you will be
happily supporting your team as they bumble along in the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga
and so on, but we'd bet the shirts on our backs that you've probably forgotten all about the teams
that were relegated last Summer.
It's almost impossible not to feel a frisson of nostalgia when 'Gladbach and Bayern play each
other. In the 1970's these two giants of the game fought like titans for Bundesliga supremacy.
Think of those days and you think of Franz Beckenbauer and Gunter Netzer. These days its Bayern
with the upper hand.
