Soccerlens bring to you: The Cheaters XI which is basically just the England squad of
the last five or so years (plus a few peripherals) which, you can't help but feel, may say more
about the British tabloid press than it does about the skewed fidelity of our nation's footballing
protagonists!
Here's another "end of the year" post about where we stand halfway through a very exciting season
in the Big 4 leagues of international soccer (Bundesliga, EPL, La Liga, and Serie A).* Below is a
set of calculations of offensive production (goals per match) at home (the first graph) and away
(the second graph).

Well Kickettes, duty calls...again.
Just as it did the last time we had enough motivation to transform ourselves into thigh
lexiconartists. We've been inspired, dear readers.
However. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Consider this Thursday Thigh-Off one more
small step towards weekly repetition.
Do yellow cards help or hurt a team's chances to win a match, or do they perhaps not matter at all?
The intuitive answer seems to be that they should hurt - that is,
if yellow cards are an
indicator of a team's inability to cope with the other side's offensive pressures. This would be
consistent with the common complaints you hear from managers that teams foul more when they are on
the losing end of a match (remember Arsene Wenger's complaints about Stoke and Blackburn?

I feel I should issue a prior warning that this one comes by way of Goal.com, so anyone
who finds their particular strain of blanket, 'see what sticks' football coverage a little rich is
advised to get out while they still can.
Anyway, the site are reporting this afternoon that the Bundesliga's joint-top scorer, Freiberg's
£10 million-rated Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cisse, is angling for an
'interesting' January move to Arsenal having already spurned the advances of Fulham in his quest to
join one of the Premier League's London-based Champions League contingent.

Bring it on, Arsenal fans said. BRING IT ON. Bring on one of the greatest teams ever to play
football. And lo, Arsenal will face Barcelona in the last 16 of this season's Champions League. I
hope Gooners are happy now. They got their wish and it will take something of a football miracle
for Arsenal to make it through two legs against Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and co.

As a great soccer year is coming to a close, I thought I'd start sharing some of the more
interesting soccer-related scientific research I've come across. Among the most fascinating papers
I've read in the past 12 months is a really creative study by three political economists (Miguel,
Saiegh, and Satyanath) about the connection between civil conflict (political violence) in a
player's home country "and his propensity to behave violently on the pitch, as measured by yellow
and red cards the player received.

My friends, it was a memorable 2010. In football terms, we've seen Dutch quality in several
forms and formats ( Champions League, Italian Serie A, Bundesliga, EPL) and most tellingly in the
World Cup.
We also had our share of disappointments but still, being the second of the world and [read

Ryan Giggs; inconsolable after our negligent behaviour. (Getty Images/Daylife)
We know that a few of you have parked outside our office with machine guns contacted us to
politely inquire why we have neglected to cover the birthdays of some elite players recently.
So, to all those fans of Torsten Frings (22nd November), Xabi Alonso (25th November), Jesus
Navas (21 on 26th November!
He's said it at the Supporters' Summit and regarding the 2022 World Cup;Don Garber intends for
our league to be not just a great league, but one of the best in the world. Is it possible?
Let's be straight with it: Sure, this is possible, but it'll take time. Until we see Garber's plans
for this, we can only assume the timetable which we assume the league will follow now: a slow
ascent with an eventual breakthrough into the American mainstream.
Lakic Will Spearhead Kaiserslautern's Attack.
You'd think this would be a relegation six-pointer for both of these sides, but Kaiserslautern
have looked a notch above a side destined for the 2. Bundesliga this season. Their hosts, however,
could be in some trouble without three points here.

Bring on the dancing horses
True, he's a perfectly decent forward with a fair old goal record in the German league to boot
but I'm sorry, not never no how has Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko ever been worth
€40 million.
It's time for another edition of Calcio Thoughts! You asked the questions, now I answer them. As
always great questions that I really enjoyed answering. If you have a calcio question or calcio

many ways you can submit it.
A Poor Excuse For His Side's Disappointing Away Form.
It's just so lame. "We don't win away because other Bundesliga clubs don't take care of their
pitches." I mean come on. Many of the Bundesliga's top clubs play a similar kind of attacking
football, and they've been able to take points on the road.
The Kult Club Get A Fortunate Win Against Their Relegation Rivals.
It's just disappointing all around really. One goal, and an own-goal, to decide what should have
been a game packed with action. Kaiserslautern have been on such high form that anyone would have
easily bet money on them smashing a St.
MSV Duisburg played early this weekend and had the chance to take the lead in the second Bundesliga
if they managed to win against Eintracht Frankfurt at home. But that was not to be, despite an
early goal from no other than the Wolves striker and target man Stefan Maierhofer. I've seen voices
on the [.
Mario Gomez: Will He Be The Scourge Of Schalke?
Round fifteen of the Bundesliga kicked off in unspectacular fashion on Friday night with St.
Pauli beating Kaiserslautern by one (own-goal) to nil. Hopefully Saturday's games, though, should
be full of action. Werder Bremen hosts Wolfsburg, and Bayern Munich travels to Schalke in two of
the bigger games of the weekend.

Will Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp still be smiling at the end of the season?
Borussia Dortmund are already confirmed as Herbstmeister (Autumn Champions) before
their weekend game against 1.FC Nürnberg on Sunday. That's because their nearest challengers 1.FSV
Mainz 05 lost out in their local derby against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Benedikt Howedes Seals Schalke's Win Over Bayern Munich.
While the goals haven't been flowing yet in this round, there have been some surprise results
and a lot of great drama. With the league leaders not playing until tomorrow, the pressure was on
some of the Bundesliga's title hopefuls to keep the pressure on Dortmund.
BvB Could Go Ten Points Clear With A Win Away To Nurnberg.
Mainz slipped up on Saturday afternoon against Eintracht Frankfurt, which gives Borussia
Dortmund the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to an enormous ten points. To
say they're running away with it wouldn't be far from the truth right now, despite it only being
December.

Samir Nasri. We're starting to 'get it'. You? (Getty Images/Zimbio)
Is it the cold weather? A new shyness breaking our amongst our baller boys? We're not sure, but
there was certainly a dearth of nekkidness in the European league fixtures this weekend. This
makes our job very difficult indeed.
You will have all recognized the unmistakable Black Yellows ie Borussia Dortmund! Autumn
Champions of this year's Bundesliga, 10 points ahead of Mainz and I'm ready to bet will stay ahead
and win the German title this year. Even better, the team's players are 22 years old on
average.
The Portuguese Winger Will Provide Width To A Potent Benfica Attack.
The Champions League continues this week with the Bundesliga's representatives finishing their
groups and either heading into the round of sixteen or out of the competition altogether. Tuesday
night features Felix Magath's Schalke, who will travel to Benfica for three more points that will
seal their top-of-the-table status; and Thomas Schaaf's struggling Werder Bremen side, who will
host last year's Champions League winners Internazionale.
The season has got off to a horrid start for Bayern Munich, sitting seventh on the ladder, a
remarkable seventeen points behind league leaders, Borrusia Dortmund. Despite a fair home record,
they have been severely let down by their away form – winning only one game outside of Allianz
Arena – following a devastating two nil loss to Shalke on the weekend.
