It's that time again, for the lists and the look-backs on what was, what could have been and what
shouldn't have been. Today we'll take a look at some of the transfers which haven't exactly panned
out thus far. Not to say they won't, it's only 6 months in after all, but at that moment [...]
Sir Alex Ferguson wants to buy an experienced defender, probably a full back, during the January
transfer window. He knows it, we know it and now so do the Glazers after the usually reticent Old
Trafford boss spoke at length about the latest injury setback suffered by Manchester United club
captain Gary Neville.
Nineteen year-old Pasco, Wash., native Preston Zimmerman has been signed as a so-called
Lizensspieler by his team Hamburg SV, according to a statement by the Bundesliga club. I'm not
entirely sure what this means. The literal translation is "licensed player" so perhaps this means
he's now a member of the first team, or is eligible for first team action?
While I'm sure all the readers got just what they wanted for Christmas, the owners and suits of
football clubs had to sit next to the tree yesterday and open up presents they didn't really want.
Waiting for that glorious stroke of midnight on January 1st to open up their real Christmas season.
And they [.
Things to read as you plan your very own steampunk wedding. Marca's feud with Rámon Calderón is
getting a little out of control. (La Liga Loca) Hell yeah, The Offside's on Facebook all the cool

The biggest news to come out of Bavaria recently was the criticism emanating from typically quiet,
reserved and sane keeper, Oliver Kahn, who was directing his veiled vile towards the foreigners at
the club. Bayern didn't like this, fined him, suspended him, whatever. While that's all nice and
dandy, the two players who were the [.
In good news, Werder Bremen got their second huge win in a week, following up the Champions League
defeat of Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Hamburger SV, a result that (briefly)
vaulted them over Bayern Munich and into first place in the Bundesliga. In bad news, over 100 fans
were arrest [.
It's that time of year again, when everybody's making their wishes and checking them twice. Same
goes for all the big boys of world football, as there are only 3 weeks left until the January
transfer windows opens back up when all the disgruntled salary leaches and necessary midseason
upgrades start swapping kits.
The top game in La Liga was undoubtedly the Barcelona derby. Andres Iniesta struck first for Barca,
but Coro equalized midway through the second half. Earlier, Real Madrid saw off seventh-placed
Racing Santander at the Bernabeu. Top-of-the-table Real got a brace from Raul and didn't seem to
have much trouble, winning the game 3-1.
When is a rigged match not a rigged match?
When the rigging is perpetrated by the bookmakers and/or the footballing authorities. That's
when.
There is a flip side to this scenario - woe betide anybody else frigging about and rigging...
UEFA is currently investigating fifteen matches from the early phases of this season which revealed
suspicious betting patterns.
In what is arguably the first major signing of the winter transfer season, Bayern Munich have
concluded a deal for São Paulo defender Vinicius Rodrigues Borges, AKA Breno. The 18-year-old, who
played in 22 matches this season for the Brazilian champions, scoring twice, reportedly cost Bayern
between €12 and 14 million, making him their second [.
You mean you really thought these were photos of goal celebrations? Hardly. We at The Offside give
you the true stories: "I'm touched, Yoann, but a simple 'thank you' would have sufficed."
Windows like this are liable to demolish prime ministerial careers - not only has Gordon Brown
lacked the midas-touch thing relating to England's Rugby Union World Cup Final and their abominable
failure to qualify for Euro 2008 but now, after yesterday's draw for the Finals, the treble whammy
is completed by the significantly increased probability of a German victory in the tournament.
News to read as you digest the news that Santa lives in Kyrgystan. Ray Hudson Drinking Game. Yes,
you can admit it if he makes me want to drive an icepick into your eardrums. Trust me, you're not

Former Turkish international defender Özalan Alpay, who has said he is close to signing with an
MLS team, will be allowed to leave 2nd Bundesliga side Cologne on a free transfer this winter.
Alpay had a falling out with his coach Christoph Daum this season and was relegated to the bench.
The club agreed to let him stay until the January transfer window to stay fit, according to a
statement by the Bundesliga (who also own the rights to this photo).
Some people have way too much time on their hands. This one must, and for that we're thankful. Ken
Roberts, a software engineer from the States of America United, has written a computer program
which generates the probability that each team wins the championship of each league. He's done it
for all the major American [.
There are about 14 shopping days til Christmas and we're all going to experience some level of
stress because of it. But your sympathies please for European football managers. Once their
Christmas shopping is out of the way (and what are the odds on Mrs. Wenger getting something cheap
and foreign but valuable in the [.
Last summer you might remember RvdV celebrated his first season as HSV skipper by requesting a move
to Spain; "I am determined to leave and Valencia would be a dream for me", he said. Thenhe famously
posed with a Valencia shirt while he was, yup, still under contract in the Bundesliga. Pure class,
that.
Luca Toni knew he was going German long ago. What's your most hated team? Ronaldinho's not pooping,
he's a Caganer! (Oh, alright, he's pooping.) Back to Brazil for Adriano. It's like Second Life,
only with footballers! Goals, goals, goals. Meltdown at Valencia. The kids are alright.
Embattled Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann could be on his way to Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg,
according to reports in the German press. The team's manager, Felix Magath, has been critical of
its starting goalkeeper Simon Jentzsch and went as far as to pull him from this weekend's game at
halftime.

1800s. Barcelona's Player X. (Barelona Offside) The teams in the World Club Cup not named "Boca" or

Theme of the week: everybody wants time off. First it was Rangers, who figured if they were going
to ask for the inch, they might as well start with the mile. Desiring an entire week off caused a
lot of hullabaloo, with much of the press frowning on their attempts for a proper nap before [...]
Our European tour starts in France, where Lyon, as is to be expected by now, are standing alone
atop the Ligue 1 standings, but aren't running away with their seventh straight title just yet.
With their upcoming Champions League clash with Rangers in mind, Lyon manager Alain Perrin sat
several key players for Saturday's [.
Every Christmas season we all run out to buy the advent calendar of our favorite club, waiting each
day in breathless anticipation for a new smiling portrait shepherding us one day close to presents
the birth of Jesus. Fans of Schalke 04 stampeded towards the club shop like little children
tumbling down the stairs at [.
This is an interesting debate in my opinion, one which you can go back and forth on for hours
depending on which club you support and what league that team is in. I'm very interested to hear
how you all stand on this question, so if you wouldn't mind when you're done reading this, leave a
comment identifying which team you follow and your reasoning for why you'd rather them win the
Champions League or their domestic league.
Some news to peruse as you give your child Roadkill Teddies for Christmas: The Club World Cup helps
keep football afloat in New Zealand, and Sepp isn't happy (Ian Plenderleith) European vs. South
American Starting XI (World Cup Blog) Posh says yes, those photos are anatomically correct. And the

The recap and highlights, where available, of the weekend watch. Saturday Valencia v Barcelona:
Barca looked like sex on the pitch, got an easy 3 goal victory over Valencia and had a vintage
performance from Samuel Eto'o, but it likely isn't enough to lift the gray cloud over the heads of
the Barcelona faithful.

This is a commercial for the 2006 World Cup in Germany last summer, with Luca Toni falling prey to
cupid's arrow and walking into the night with a German lass. As Luca drives off, the words "I Heart
Germany" can be read on the back of his sports car. Did Luca know something we didn't?
Several upsets went down in today's European league action, with Reading's impressive 3-1 victory
over Liverpool the most interesting from an Anglo-American viewpoint. Royals American left winger
Bobby Convey proved his worth--and hopefully secured a spot in the starting lineup--with a
brilliant assist on Reading's third goal that sealed the deal.
'Twas a good weekend for Borussia Dortmund, 'twas a very bad weekend for Arminia Bielefield and
their fans. On Friday, BVB went all kinds of bananas on Arminia, channeling their inner Werder
Bremen (almost) and routing them 6-1 during a fantastic clinic on routing teams. This is the second
time this season Arminia Bielefeld has [.
Despite retaining their status as Bundesliga leaders, things are not well at Bayern Munich. Their
form has dipped significantly recently, and after a goalless draw with 10-man Duisburg (who are
second-bottom in the league), coach Ottmar Hitzfeld criticized his team's focus and apparent
obsession with "playing pretty football" rather than just winning.
VfL Wolfsburg head coach Felix Magath is preparing to rid his team of Berkeley, Calif., native
Kamani Hill and Portuguese defender Alex. As a first step, Magath has cleared the pair from
practice requirements and allowed them to "do as they pleased," including finding a new club,
according to German news wire newsclick.
5-2 Werder Bremen vs. Bayer Leverkusen | GoalsUploaded by 90tsunni In only his 3rd Bundesliga game,
one which was a 9 minute cameo as a sub, since returning after 2 kidney transplant in 10 months,
Ivan Klasnic stole the spotlight in Werder Bremen's 5-2 win over fellow top of the table rivals
Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

It's time to take a trip around Europe once again to see how some of the other leagues in the
continent are shaking out as we head towards the new year (you did know that there was football
beyond the English Premier League, right?). The Bundesliga is on break until February, and heading
into [...]
It's not so much promoted as it is accepted: athletes and coaches make buckets and buckets of
unjustifiable money. For something so blatantly obvious and waved before our faces, it doesn't get
brought up much in the mainstream media. More often it's an off-hand remark rather than a full
subject line.
