Let me take a second to pat myself on the back. Okay, that's enough. Everyone that I told Zizzo
would be playing overseas sooner than later and you looked at me like I was an idiot: suck it. The
kid is quality. I'm sorry he didn't score ten goals in the U20 World Cup. Heck, I'm sorry he didn't
score even once, but if you didn't notice his ability and contribution, well, you're probably just
the typical American soccer fan.
It's that time of the year again. The time when a random (ok, let's call it 'well-respected' if you
prefer) football publication makes an "All Time Best" ranking that never fails to create
controversy and offend a few people. FourFourTwo did one of those last month, this time it's the
turn of the 'Association of [...]
It's that time again, for the lists and the look-backs on what was, what could have been and what
shouldn't have been. Today we'll take a look at some of the transfers which haven't exactly panned
out thus far. Not to say they won't, it's only 6 months in after all, but at that moment [...]
A German Bundesliga team could embark on a 2008 summer tour of the U.S. that would involve
exhibition games against Major League Soccer teams, reports kicker.de, the Web site of Germany's
famous soccer publication. (Don't bother clicking on the link, unless you read German). This would
be part of the nebulous partnership that MLS and Germany's Deutsche Fußball-Liga (or DFL, the
administrative arm of the Bundesliga) signed this March.
Werder Bremen pummeled Arminia Nielefeld, 8-1. Compare this video to the 'calamity' that was
Portsmouth versus Reading. My boy Boubacar scored a brace an got an assist while Diego had a goal
and three assists. None of these were really savable.
- Maradona and his 1986 World Cup-winning Argentina teammates have agreed to an unofficial rematch
with the English side that El Diego scored the 'Hand of God' goal against in the quarterfinals of
that competition. Peter Reid, a member of the English squad, had this to say:"This is our chance to
show what we can do and get a little bit of revenge." Sounds kind of sad to me, old men not being
able to let bygones be bygones.
Sir Alex Ferguson wants to buy an experienced defender, probably a full back, during the January
transfer window. He knows it, we know it and now so do the Glazers after the usually reticent Old
Trafford boss spoke at length about the latest injury setback suffered by Manchester United club
captain Gary Neville.
I took the day off today to wait for the washing machine man so took the opportunity to spend the
afternoon watching Bundesliga replays and highlights on Setanta. I learned two things from the
experience. One, that the circuit boards on Hotpoints are sh*t and two, that German Champions
Stuttgart are in deep sh*t. Armin Vey's depleted team travelled to Hamburg last Saturday and were
well and
Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has lost his starting place at Arsenal due to two mistakes in the
first two games of the season, and an early-season injury.
Since then Manuel Almunia has started every Premier League game, with Lehmann, the former
first-choice keeper, relegated to the bench.
The keeper has been incredibly critical of manager Arsene Wenger and Manuel Almunia, going public
on his feelings that he is by far the better keeper at Arsenal.
Nineteen year-old Pasco, Wash., native Preston Zimmerman has been signed as a so-called
Lizensspieler by his team Hamburg SV, according to a statement by the Bundesliga club. I'm not
entirely sure what this means. The literal translation is "licensed player" so perhaps this means
he's now a member of the first team, or is eligible for first team action?
While I'm sure all the readers got just what they wanted for Christmas, the owners and suits of
football clubs had to sit next to the tree yesterday and open up presents they didn't really want.
Waiting for that glorious stroke of midnight on January 1st to open up their real Christmas season.
And they [.
You read that right. German clubs FC Hanau '93 (pictured)and BFC Viktoria Berlin will meet today to
decide which of them was crowned German champions of 1894. 113 years ago, the two teams were due to
play each other in the first German championship match. Unfortunately, what with it being the 19th
century and all, [...]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByIZk3fhmm8 In order to keep our license and our spot on the
internet, The Offside is federally mandated to show any goal scored by any penis from anywhere in
the world. The effort above comes from Stuttgart's Mario Gomez against Bayern Munich this weekend.
Not convinced it hit his wee-wee? Let's defer to [...]
After checking out some of the swing and misses on Friday, it's time to look at some of the
transfers which have made suits look like geniuses over the first half of the season. Fernando
Torres Atletico got, what, the GDP of Latvia for his services? Well, ask any Red fan and they'll
tell you to a [.
The drama surrounding Michael Ballack took a further turn today. After being excluded from
Chelsea's Champions League squad because he may not be fit for most of the group stages (Joachim
Low and the German NT doctors disagree), Ballack was also prevented from filming a publicity shoot
for Adidas, the main sponsor of the German [...]
Bayern Munich is both the most popular and most loathed club all over Germany – a true touchstone
(almost requirement) for a club considering itself national. However, is it the arrogant, prideful
trio of Jancker-Effenberg-Basler or the much more likable Scholl-Tarnat-Elber triumvirate, which
truly represents the Bavarian club? I am not here to judge, [.
Things to read as you plan your very own steampunk wedding. Marca's feud with Rámon Calderón is
getting a little out of control. (La Liga Loca) Hell yeah, The Offside's on Facebook all the cool
kids are doing it! (Facebook) Comparing Milan and Barca. (Angry Nun) Criticizing the criticism of
MLS team names.
The biggest news to come out of Bavaria recently was the criticism emanating from typically quiet,
reserved and sane keeper, Oliver Kahn, who was directing his veiled vile towards the foreigners at
the club. Bayern didn't like this, fined him, suspended him, whatever. While that's all nice and
dandy, the two players who were the [.
There are three new Werder Bremen kits, last years home shirt is with the green and white halves
is the new away shirt, the only change on it is the new sponsors Citibank's logo. The new home
shirt is the all green one, with a white collar. The third Werder Bremen kit is grey with a lime
green collar and will be used on special occasions and when there is a clash with both the home &
away shirts.
Recently I've read on a few blogs about how AC Milan fans aren't very pleased with their club's
lack of activity during the transfer window. Other than the addition of young Brazilian striker
Alexandre Pato, they have failed to add anyone significant, but maybe it's because they appear to
be set to gain through loss. Weight loss, that is. You see, Brazilian legend Ronaldo, who the
Rossoneri took off of Real Madrid's hands in the January transfer window, was diagnosed with
hypothyroidism earlier this summer and immediately began medical treatment for the disease and
resulting weight issue.
In today's day and age. money, sex tapes, refereeing scandals and anything involving England
dominate the front pages of print, relegating the feel-good stories to page 3 status, and often
going unheard by the masses. Well this one's going front page. Ivan Klasnic returned to Werder
Bremen on Saturday.
Some of the games were so fantastic this weekend that they needed to be recapped. So we're doing
just that from here on out. Saturday Bayern Munich - VfL Wolfsburg That big "whoosh" coming from
Germany this weekend was Ottmar Hitzfeld's massive sigh of relief after Franck "I Heart Italy"
Ribery and his one-man show saved his bacon [.
In good news, Werder Bremen got their second huge win in a week, following up the Champions League
defeat of Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Hamburger SV, a result that (briefly)
vaulted them over Bayern Munich and into first place in the Bundesliga. In bad news, over 100 fans
were arrest [.
It's that time of year again, when everybody's making their wishes and checking them twice. Same
goes for all the big boys of world football, as there are only 3 weeks left until the January
transfer windows opens back up when all the disgruntled salary leaches and necessary midseason
upgrades start swapping kits.
We all know football transfers are crazy. But they don't come any crazier than Carlos Tevez' long
drawn out move from Manchester United to West Ham. The whole mess could get sorted out tomorrow
when representatives from the English FA, the Premier League and FIFA will sit down over several
very nice cups of coffee [...]
Owen Hargreaves is settling nicely into Manchester United's midfield, with a solid enough display
in today's 2-2 draw at Arsenal. But for the longest time he wasn't popular popular in England.
Partly because of his piss poor 80th minute substitute performances in an England shirt and partly,
I suspect, because he talks funny. It's not English [...]
Last month i posted about 17-year-old Macauley Chrisantus who was the subject of interest of Man
City,Ajax,Arsenal,Barcelona,Real Madrid and Man Utd.Chrisantus walked away with two awards in South
Korea (2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup); he won the golden boot scoring 7 goals, and was voted 2nd most
influential player (2 assists) after Germany's Toni Kross, making him one of the most sort after
player in Europe but German club Hamburg suprised many when they announced today that the Nigerian
has signed a contract with them.
Former Turkish international fullback Özalan Alpay who has said he wants to leave 2nd Bundesliga
side F.C. Cologne for MLS, was suspended indefinitely by his club team for "egotism." This
according to a statement by his club via Bundesliga sources. To rip off a line from Apocalypse Now,
isn't suspending a professional athlete for being egotistical like handing out speeding tickets at
the Indianapolis 500?
Right well, since I managed to convince my VCR that it is two weeks ago, I have not been able to
watch any highlights from last week. Unless you count about half an hour of Wolfsburg's 2-1 defeat
at Munich at three o'clock last Saturday morning before passing out in a drunken stupor. I saw
enough to know that Franck had yet another corker.
The top game in La Liga was undoubtedly the Barcelona derby. Andres Iniesta struck first for Barca,
but Coro equalized midway through the second half. Earlier, Real Madrid saw off seventh-placed
Racing Santander at the Bernabeu. Top-of-the-table Real got a brace from Raul and didn't seem to
have much trouble, winning the game 3-1.
When is a rigged match not a rigged match?
When the rigging is perpetrated by the bookmakers and/or the footballing authorities. That's
when.
There is a flip side to this scenario - woe betide anybody else frigging about and rigging...
UEFA is currently investigating fifteen matches from the early phases of this season which revealed
suspicious betting patterns.
In what is arguably the first major signing of the winter transfer season, Bayern Munich have
concluded a deal for São Paulo defender Vinicius Rodrigues Borges, AKA Breno. The 18-year-old, who
played in 22 matches this season for the Brazilian champions, scoring twice, reportedly cost Bayern
between €12 and 14 million, making him their second [.
You mean you really thought these were photos of goal celebrations? Hardly. We at The Offside give
you the true stories: "I'm touched, Yoann, but a simple 'thank you' would have sufficed."
Im Rahmen des Blog-Karnevals von fussballfieber.de schreibe ich heute über meine Visionen und
Erwartungen an die Bundesliga-Saison 2007/2008.Verlängerung
While one young Schalke 04 player is making a name for himself in Germany, a VFB Stuttgart player
is keeping his identity secret. And with good reason. VFB fans will recognize the shape shaved into
this mystery player's, erm, pubic region as the club crest. It's one thing to kiss the badge on
your shirt after [...]
International football is all very nice. Especially if you're Scottish. But with the Women's World
Cup now in full swing, the menfolk get back to the bread and butter of good old fashioned domestic
football.
The sixth and seventh-ranked teams in Soccer Source's Top 25 both lost today, as #7 Bayern Munich
finally fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and #6 Barcelona went down again on the road. The
Bavarian side got clobbered at VfB Stuttgart, losing 3-1 in a game that was decided at halftime.
Mario Gomez completed a brace at minute 42 to put the defending Bundesliga champs up 3-0.
Representatives from Major League Soccer will meet with Christian Seifert and other representatives
of Germany's Deutsche Fußball-Liga (or DFL, the administrative arm of the Bundesliga) this weekend
to solidify plans that call for one or more Bundesliga teams to tour the U.S. and play exhibition
games against MLS sides next summer. So says the German soccer Web site kicker.
