Hey there Soccer Fans. I'm the new kid on the block and since my first day on the job is just
two days after USSoccer defeated T&T I've got some thoughts.
My original thinking was that the US squad had too much power for the Soca Warriors. Well, I
was wrong. The "power" for the Americans came from Ricardo Clark.
The USF men's team went to Fort Myers Saturday night and came back with a narrow 1-0 victory over
Florida Gulf Coast University(1-1-0) in front of 515 supporters. The Bulls (2-0-0) were outshot by
the Eagles 10-8 in a very defensive match, but USF was able to get the lone goal of the game in the
eighty-seventh minute.
When: Today, Noon
Where: USF Soccer Stadium
South Florida will host LSU today and both schools enter the match with identical 1-1-1 records and
both are short on goals scored. The Tigers have scored three on the season and the Bulls have
netted just two.
Good goalkeeping from senior Mallori Lofton-Malachi has kept the Bulls season on track.
When: Tonight, 7:30pm
Where: USF Soccer Stadium
The Bulls (2-0-0) will host Valparaiso tonight and look to stay perfect in the early stage of this
season. South Florida move from eleventh to eighth in the new NSCAA Division I poll released
today.
South Florida has notched a couple of close wins over instate rivals UCF and Florida Gulf Coast
University to start their 2009 season.
On Tuesday night the USF men played a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation time against the visiting
Valparaiso University, out shooting the Crusaders 14-7. The crowd of 881 at the USF Soccer Stadium
settled in for overtime, but the Bulls (3-0-0) made quick work of Valpo in the extra time. Bernardo
Anor [right] scored off a Javed Mohammed free kick less than a minute into the first overtime.
When: Tonight, 8pm
Where: Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium, Blacksburg, VA
The Bulls (3-0-0) take their undefeated record on the road tonight to be tested by Virginia Tech
(1-1-1). South Florida lost on its only previous trip to Blacksburg, but the NSCAA eighth ranked
Bulls are hoping to defend that ranking and come away with a win.
Jeff Attinella posted his third consecutive shutout in the Bulls net to boost South Florida to a
4-0-0 record in a game where both schools could only muster seven shots apiece. Attinella now has a
stingy 0.25 GAA for the season.
USF capitalized on one of those shots, just a minute into the second half.
When: Today, 1pm
Where: UCF Soccer Complex, Orlando
The Bulls (2-2-1) found their scoring touch in a big way on Friday night, exploding for six goals
against Austin Peay. They will need some of that goal scoring ability to handle UCF on the road.
The Knights (4-1-1) upset number four ranked FSU at home on Thursday night in overtime and have not
been scored on in the last three matches.
Two USF players, one current and one former, have received accolades for last week's
performances.
South Florida's junior goalkeeper, Jeff Attinella, was named the Big East Conference goalkeeper of
the week based on his two shutouts last week. The 1-0 wins against Valparaiso and Virginia Tech
have paced the Bulls to a perfect 4-0-0 start.
When: Today, 4pm
Where: Stetson Soccer Complex, Deland, FL
After dropping their Big East Conference opener 2-1 to Marquette on Thursday, the Bulls (2-4-1)
face a non-conference opponent in Stetson this afternoon. This will be South Florida's final
non-conference match. These schools drew 1-1 last season in Tampa.
The latest player to go down: midfielder Bojan Stepanovic, out four to six weeks - essentially
the season then - with "a dislocated patella in his right knee" suffered Wednesday in the game
against that other Chivas.
Didn't he just get here?
And I bet Preki was thrilled this happened in a friendly.

When: Tonight 7pm
Where: FGCU Soccer Complex, Fort Myers
South Florida hits the road tonight for its first away game against Florida Gulf Coast. This is the
first meeting ever between the two schools and FGCU is 1-0-0 coming into the game. The Eagles are a
Division I program. The Bulls are also 1-0-0 after a tough victory at home against UCF.
The South Florida men have risen three spots in the latest NSCAA Division I poll on the back of two
wins last week and an overall 4-0-0 record. The Bulls now are now ranked number four in the nation
by the NSCAA.
Meanwhile, in the NSCAA Division II poll, the UT men (4-0-0) maintained their hold on the top spot
by staying unbeaten last week.
When: Tonight, 8pm Eastern
Where: Valley Fields, Milwaukee, WI
South Florida (2-3-1) starts its Big East Conference schedule tonight, on the road, against
Marquette (5-2-0). The Golden Eagles are currently undefeated at home and the Bulls are win less in
two road games. To overcome Marquette, the South Florida offense will have to get more shots on
goal and better shots.
South Florida's offensive difficulties continued tonight in Wisconsin against Marquette (6-2-1).
The Bulls (2-4-1) dropped the curtain raiser for their 2009 Big East Conference schedule 2-1 to the
Golden Eagles. USF has only had one multiple goal performance this season and has been shutout
twice.
A slight pattern is developing; if the USF women (3-4-1) score more than once in a game, they win.
The Bulls came back from a 2-1 deficit to tie the match and then win it in overtime on the road
against the Hatters (4-4-0).
USF's Chantelle Goodson scored her first goal of the season on a long range shot in the
thirty-sixth minute that glanced off the crossbar and into the goal.
The Bulls are no stranger to extra time, Thursday's match in Pittsburg was the third South Florida
game to go past ninety minutes this season. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, South Florida
(3-4-2) and Pitt (5-2-2) settled for a draw.
Taking the shut out for the Bulls was senior, Mallori Lofton-Malachi, who now has two on the season
and seventeen during her career.
USF's leading scorer, Noelle Pineiro [left], secured a big win for the Bulls on Sunday with an
assist and then a goal to defeat West Virginia (4-3-4) in front of just 267 at the USF Soccer
Stadium. Pineiro, a sophomore from Bradenton, has been USF's most consistent source of scoring this
season, while the team has lacked the finishing touch at times.
When: Tonight 7:30pm
Where: USF Soccer Stadium
The Bulls will start their 2009 regular season campaign tonight, at home, against UCF. This will be
the Golden Knights' season opener as well.
USF senior Zak Boggs will be hoping to he and his teammates can start on the right foot with a win
against his former team.
The good news is the Bulls (1-2-1) finally broke their scoreless streak of 218 minutes with a goal
from Noelle Pineiro [right] in the sixty-fourth minute of Sunday's match against LSU. The bad news
is that Pineiro is the only South Florida player has been able to score this season and the Tigers
(2-1-1) broke their own scoreless streak with not one, but two second half goals.
When: Tonight, 7:30pm
Where: USF Soccer Stadium
South Florida (1-2-1) will try to fire on all cylinders tonight and post another win against the
visiting Austin Peay Governors (1-3-1) tonight in the Bulls' final match before it starts a four
game road trip.
The Bulls have been led by senior goalkeeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi who has two shutouts this
season.
After South Florida's red hot performance on Friday night, beating Austin Peay 6-0, the Bulls went
ice cold on Sunday against UCF. USF has had trouble scoring goals this season except in their rout
of Austin Peay and against the Knights, they had difficulty even getting a shot on goal. The Bulls
had just four on the day and only one was on goal.
When: Tonight, 7:30pm
Where: USF Soccer Stadium
South Florida (4-0-0) starts its Big East Conference schedule, tonight, at home to Marquette
(1-3-0). Last season, Marquette was the doormat of the conference, winning just one conference
match. USF comes into this match ranked number five by the current NSCAA poll.
South Florida (5-0-1) was rewarded for starting its Big East schedule 1-0-1 last week by leaping
over number four Maryland to land in the the number three spot in the latest NSCAA Division I poll.
The Bulls' men will continue their conference schedule with a pair of matches this coming weekend
away to West Virgina and Pittsburgh.
After a seemingly endless string of MLS PK awards that have sent fans of virtually every MLS team
out into the night in search of replacement TV's (since the one they watched the game on now has a
brick in it) it's nice - well, maybe nice isn't exactly the word; let's say a relief - to finally
see an official point to the spot in stoppage time and not see him immediately surrounded by a
lynch mob of players bent on demonstrating that the FIFA "Respect" progam is the soccer equivalent
of "WIN" buttons:
Seriously, when is the last time you saw a ref call a spot kick and NOBODY says a single word to
him?
When: Tonight, 8pm
Where: Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, Morgantown, WV
South Florida (5-0-1) travels tonight to take on the Mountaineers (2-2-2) in the Bulls' third Big
East game of the season. USF has a number three ranking in the latest NSCAA poll to defend and
would like to improve its position in the Big East Red Division, where the Bulls are in third place
after two matches.
A large crowd of over 1,500 turned out on a cool Friday evening in Morgantown to watch West
Virginia (3-2-2) shock the number three ranked Bulls barely a minute into overtime. Ninety minutes
of regulation time yielded a poor effort from South Florida (5-1-1) as they failed to get one of
their just three shots on the Mountaineer goal.
When: Today, 1pm
Where: Founders Field, Pitt Campus
After suffering their first defeat of the season to West Virginia on Friday night, South Florida
(5-1-1) will try to rebound this afternoon against the lowly University of Pittsburgh (1-7-0). Pitt
is currently enduring a seven match losing streak and has not scored in their last five matches.
What did the Bulls really need after being upset by West Virginia on Friday night in a Big East
Conference match? How about a date with the Big East whipping boys Pittsburgh Panthers (1-8-0)?
Perfect.
South Florida (6-1-1) pushed the attack against Pitt, out shooting them 19-10. The Bulls were
rewarded at the quarter hour mark when Andre Mittoo scored his first goal of the season.
Since I've led off the last two Mondays with late game PK's (deserved or otherwise) I figure
it's only fair to show this effort, whereupon I will propose that in the future any similar effort
shall be known as "a Kljestan", as in "Boy, I was really pissed when Kevin Stott called that
phantom hand ball PK, but fortunately the shooter pulled a Kljestan, so it didn't matter"
When the first people who come up to you after a PK effort are both wearing your opponents'
uniform, you've really screwed the pooch.
