Next summer I'm travelling around Europe by rail during Euro 2012, aiming to see as many matches in as many different countries as possible. The tournament itself is being held in Poland and the Ukraine (as the image above handily illustrates) and I'll go to a couple of actual matches there but I want to watch the Croats play whilst in Croatia (with their fans), the Bulgarians whilst in Bulgaria, the Latvians whilst in Latvia, etc.

Nothing Spices Up International Friendly Week Like Match-Fixing

France v Brazil? Portugal v Argentina? Germany v Italy? Bosh. The big game of the international friendly week was found far off in the corner of Antalya, Turkey, where Bulgaria and Estonia scrapped it out to a 2-2 draw. Not your typical marquee friendly, but this wasn't your typical game.

There were pregame rumblings that the fix was in, and the fact that all four goals came via penalties did nothing to quiet the whispers.

How quickly we or at least some people forget. When England were not so much knocked out of the World Cup last summer by Germany as blasted to smithereens in the manner of the Death Star obliterating an unsuspecting planet, there was much caterwauling on the state of the national team, as if England's tepid performance in the tournament overall had been a sudden bolt from the blue.

It has been well documented in the English press that today is the 25th anniversary of Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal in Argentina's 2-1 victory over England in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. That game brought out the best and worst sides of a player who, in my opinion, was the greatest footballer ever to play the game and it is arguably what "El Diego" did in the whole of that tournament which turned me from indifferent to passaionate about the game of football.
