The latest FIFA World Rankings were released on Wednesday September 2, 2009 with not many
changes. Brazil remains on top but Spain has closed the gap to less than 20 points. The rest of the
top ten remains about the same with Italy moving up one spot to be tied with Germany for 4th and
France slipped to 10th while Croatia moved up one to 9th.
Italy have practically qualified for the World Cup following their more than fortunate win away to
Georgia (thanks to our very own Kaladze) and their impressive win against Bulgaria. In the first
match the Azzurri were poor lacking any creativity whatsoever. That was until Lippi pushed Pirlo up
into the trequartista role.
England have qualified for the South Africa 2010 World Cup, all they needed was a draw against
Croatia, and they won in style, winning 5-1. Lampard and Gerrard scoring two goals each, with
Rooney scoring one to finish off the Croatians.
Italy having won both of their matches in this International break, look to be in a good position
in their group with 20 points, 4 above the Ireland Republic.
