Former footballer Hidetoshi Nakata appears in the new Calvin Klein "X" ad for less than a
millisecond, but his appearance is duly noted (and appreciated.
After watching the Italian national team's disastrous exit from the World Cup, I could not help
but think that such a flaccid performance was required not just once, but twice. Why? The myth
of the 2006 champions has punished la Nazionale for far too long, and such a powerful story like
being 'i campioni del mondo' needed to be really shaken out of everyone's minds.
Tim Howard's performances with the US National team and Everton FC of the English Premier League
ranks him among the best goalkeepers in the world.
In a recent Fox Sports poll, 79% of the fans felt that Howard is among the top 5-10 goalkeepers in
the world. His performances in last summer's FIFA Confederations Cup helped measure him against the
likes of Casillas & Buffon, and his play in the EPL surely sits him among the top goalkeepers in
the most competitive league in Europe.
Today I read that Didier Drogba might not be able to play the World Cup in South Africa due to a
hernia operation he might go through. The info comes from France's L'Equipe. I do feel bad for the
guy, but unfortunately the rapid change of feeling comes when I remember Brazil is playing Ivory
Coast, and playing Ivory Coast without Drogba would be a heck lot easier.
The Arsenal rumours are still coming in, and today's goalkeeper is the Italian legend Gigi Buffon
again. It is being reported that Arsenal are now favourites to sign the 30 year-old, and judging by
the reaction from the fans, it is a great idea to bring him in while the young Pole Woljeich
Szcesney gains [.

Perhaps one of the reasons for my supposed illiteracy (see comments, here), is that I spend an
awful lot of my time in front of my Xbox (it rots your brains or something). I love football games.
In fact at University, I think I spent more hours playing PES 6 than I did doing my coursework.
Which possibly explains a few things.
Post-African Cup of Nations 2010 coverage we are working on a couple of things behind the scenes on
Just Football, hence the brief dip in posting regularity over the past week or so. While we
experience this break from our regular scheduled programming here are a couple of links to articles
I've found interesting lately:
Where else to start but Manchester United's impressive 3-2 win over AC Milan at the San Siro, which
hands them a desirable advantage heading into the 2nd leg of their Champions League round of 16
knockout clash.
What is on paper a strong team could end up being a weak one when tested by a tricky opponent.
How the players gel and work together, how effective the coach is in bringing the best out of
players, the strength of the defensive line and often the rise of a relative unknown to help
carry the team can all influence who ends up winning.
Clearly this Arsenal side is woefully short on quality, quantity and height. If we are to win
the league make Europe next season, it is imperative we make some massive buys. We all saw what
happened to Liverpool right? City came into the scene, splashed a few dozen gazillion pounds and
Voila! Champions League football baby!
Coming into every transfer window, our squad is analysed, and a position on the field is
pinpointed as "The Weakness". From that moment on, every player who can fill that role is tipped as
a potential signing, with no attention paid to the player's current allegiances, squad role, or
value. Or even if he is any good.
Time for our World Cup Group F predictions. Don't want to jinx it, but I'm actually thinking
this will be easier to figure out than most. The contenders alphabetical order are: Italy,
Paraguay, Slovakia, New Zealand. No prizes for guessing who finishes bottom.
No prizes for guessing who finishes top either.
The Azzurri have played their first match, and while some will view the 1-1 draw result as a bad
thing, the match was actually filled with positives for Italy. Although we've seen Germany demolish
Australia 4-0, I think that the Azzurri match was unique, it finally felt like I was watching a
World Cup match.
The meme that Italy are too old was from the start some what of a ruse by the worlds major
media. When Italy are mentioned the automatic response mechanism triggered in the media's mind is
"Italy are too old."Eliciting in me a cringing response. I started to buy into it also, why?
Because i too can be fat and lazy in the brain.
By now you have undoubtedly heard about the injury to Gigi Buffon and his questionable status
for the remainder of the World Cup. Reading between the lines of the statements coming out of the
Italian camp it looks like possibly the best keeper in the world could actually miss the entire
World Cup.
Gazzetta dello sport trumpets :It's all Black. Worst Italian team ever
Italy looked satiated.A team without a fire. "Grinta" (Gritty) a word synonymous with Italian
football was impossible to find. Marcello Lippi fell on his sword today and bravely and responsibly
accepted fault for this disgraceful campaign.
Hello on a boiling hot south-eastern England afternoon.
Sky Sports seem adamant that Arsenal are looking at Slovenia goalkeeper Samir
Handanovic who had a pretty impressive World Cup. He has played for Udinese for most of his career
and is pretty highly rated in Italy, after all they would know a decent keeper when they see one
after having had the quality of Buffon and Toldo down the years.
The Telegraph this morning confirmed previous reports that Arsenal is discussing a
transfer of Cagliari keeper Federico Marchetti for around $8.5 million. Marchetti has made it
clear that he is seeking a transfer from the Serie A club and Arsenal would seemingly be a good
fit. Most Serie A clubs have settled on their starting keeper for the year and Arsenal is
desperately seeking help in goal after poor performances last season from starter Manuel Almunia
and backup Lukasz Fabianski (the need for a keeper has been very well documented by Arsenal
fans).
Italy have begun to forget about Lippi and the World Cup failure, the team has new faces and is
beginning to click under Cesare Prandelli. The first qualifying match for the European
Championships Poland/Ukraine 2012 was against Estonia, and while Prandelli couldn't use Balotelli,
Buffon, and a few other important players, Italy were able to win.
Iker Casillas, Spain and Real Madrid captain, has today claimed that Joe Hart is too good for a
club like Manchester City, and should instead consider a move to Manchester United to replace Edwin
Van der Sar when he retires.
Casillas, who has won a whole host of individual awards for his ability, reckons there's
something special about Hart and hopes he has a clause in his contract which will get him out of
playing for City for when they don't qualify for the Champions League.
Now doesn't it feel like decades ago that we blogged about the "issues" relating to Willie Collum
refereeing the first Celtic/Rangers match of the season...?
Of the 980 blog posts that have appeared on the Football Is Fixed website over the years, none have
been as key as the current Caledonian Referee Scandal Series.

Chievo, since being promoted to Serie A in 2001, had never beaten Juventus in their history. In
fact, in 15 encounters vs. the Bianconeri, the Flying Donkeys had lost 12 times and drawn 3. Last
season in Torino the two sides provided an entertaining 3-3 draw, with Sergio Pellissier grabbing a
historic hat-trick.
Every year around this time the Oscar del Calcio award ceremony is held in Milan. The awards
ceremony has been held since 1997 and awards the best players in the peninsula from the previous
season. Last year Zlatan Ibrahimovic cleaned house as he won Best Foreigner and Best Overall
Player, as well as Goal of the Season.
The ED-209-looking monstrosity above is a robot developed by Castrol Japan that can take a free
kick, and can apparently strike a ball at speeds of 200 kilometres per hour or more. Which is very
very fast. Did you not see the video?
Castrol claim they were inspired to design and build the robot by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Juventus suffered another defeat which perhaps came as no surprise despite the fact Roma were
rather not impressive until the penalty-kick which was converted by Francesco Totti. The Bianconeri
did not deserve to lose the match but the players have certainly been struggling despite putting in
a better effort against the Giallorossi.

WAG Clio Zenden reveals that her seven-year relationship with Sunderland's Bolo Zenden is
officially dunzo.
There are many English football fans who like World In Motion, New Order's 1990 World
Cup song. I am not one of those people, but I don't think the song is an sort of embarrassment to
that group.
Compared to this, however, World In Motion might as well be the Champions League
theme.
While the never ending debate about who our strikers should be continues, lets focus on
something a bit easier to determine: the defense. Buffon is a given in goal, but who should play in
front of him? Nesta probably won't return to the fold, leaving a possible disaster waiting to
happen in the back.
