It is now forty-three years since Newcastle United last won a major trophy, but last season saw
Alan Pardew restore a little pride to the club with a fifth place finish in the Premier League
which brought with it the return of European football to St James Park next season. On todays match
of the past, though, we are going back to when silverware was just part of life for the supporters
of this club, starting with a compilation of highlights from their FA Cup final appearances of
1951, 1952 and 1955.
Liverpool FC talisman Steven Gerrard admitted he was extremely proud to surpass Newcastle United
and Blackburn Rovers legend Alan Shearer's European scoring record during Liverpool FC's 3-1 win in
Unirea on Thursday night.
The Liverpool FC star scored the 33rd European goal of his career in the second half against Unirea
Urziceni in Budapest last night, to better Newcastle United hero Alan Shearer's tally and in doing
become England's all-time leading scorer in European competitions.

Rafael Benitez has confirmed Liverpool will prioritise their bid to make a swift return to the
Champions League over a tilt for Europa League glory.
Being winners of Europe's most-prized club trophy in 2005 and finalists in 2007 counts for little
now in the wake of an exit in the group stages for the first time in six seasons under Benitez.
David Ngog's 4th minute goal in Budapest gave Liverpool victory and seven points in Champions
League Group E. However it was not enough to prevent Pools from crashing out on Wednesday.
Liverpool, 3rd in the table, will play in the Europa League this season. Will a possible financial
implosion make Liverpool crumble like Leeds 5 years ago?
Ryan Babel has been ruled out of Liverpool's Champions League Group E match with Debrecen in
Hungary tomorrow. The Dutch striker has failed to recover after twisting his ankle in Saturday's
draw with Manchester City. Striker Fernando Torres will also play no part following his groin
problem but may be fit to face Everton on Sunday.
Liverpool will try to keep their Champions League hopes alive without Fernando Torres.
The Spanish striker will again be absent when Liverpool head to Budapest today for the must win tie
with Debrecen.
Torres is to continue his rehabilitation from a hernia problem on Merseyside and misses the game
Liverpool have to win to have any chance to stay in the competition.
Cayman Islands FA president Jeffrey Webb is now the 4th president of the CONCACAF confederation. He
was the lone candidate for the position (29 nominations out of the 40 members) and was voted by
acclamation at the CONCACAF congress in Budapest today. Webb has the administrative experience from
years of service at the national FA, CFU, CONCACAF, and FIFA committees, and has accumulated the
contacts that go along with such service.
Jeffrey Webb is now officially the president of CONCACAF. Webb was elected on Wednesday in Budapest
during CONCACAF's meeting as part of FIFA's Congress. Webb ran unopposed. Representing the Cayman
Islands, Webb was previously president of the Caribbean Football Union, a subsidiary of CONCACAF.
"Over the last year our mission and our vision have been blurred, from lawyers, to audit reports to
compensation, we have deviated from our mission," Webb said in his acceptance speech.
It wasn't all that long ago when playing midfield seemed to require more height than ever to crowd
the center of the pitch. As a matter of fact, the average height of professional footballers has
been increasing for a number of years now. The latest Professional Football Players
Observatory report of the demographics of footballers in Europe reveals that players in the
Czech Republic, Germany, and Denmark on average are around 1.

This is probably the hardest post I have had to write so far. When you are as big of a fan of a
team as I am of Sweden, then a game like the one against Hungary really hurts. Lets start things
off: I really thought we were going to win this one. All signs prior to the game had pointed in
that direction.
The Dutch football team translated the big difference in quality between the number one and the
number last on the world ranking into a historic win of 11-0. The good news kept on coming, as
Hungary beat Sweden (2-1) later in Budapest.
As a result, Van Marwijk's men are virtually qualified [read more]
Writing a blog about football means having to admit that you are wrong more often than not. In
this latest instance, it was my idea about whom Hamren was going to select for the friendly against
the Ukraine tomorrow. I was wrong about Mellberg (vacation), Ibrahimovic (vacation), Martin Olsson
(who knows why?
The day is finally here. The Huns of Budapest finally return to the scene of their most heinous
crime. For Finland, it's time to stand tall and bury their most horrifying memory.
As the big game has drawn closer, more and more media outlets have relived the horror of October
11th 1997.
Phillip Lahm has been confirmed as captain and Bastian Schweinsteiger as vice-captain. Manuel
Neuer will be first in South Africa, Tim Wiese second, and Hans-Jörg Butt third.
Miroslav Klose will start as captain against Hungary tomorrow, Lahm, Schweini, Butt, and Thomas
Müller will be rested and will not travel to Budapest.

Athletic Bilbao last won silverware in 1984, so fans of the popular Basque side travelled in
their droves to attend the Europa League Final earlier this week for a chance to witness a
rekindling of their former glory. Sadly, Falcao and ten other Atletico Madrid players were 3-0
victors on the night, which was particularly hard news to take for the 400 Athletic Club fans who
travelled to Hungary for the game by mistake.
CONCACAF announced a few days ago that Jeffrey Webb, a banker and current president of the Cayman
Islands FA, will be the only candidate for the CONCACAF presidency. The vote won't occur until
CONCACAF's Extraordinary Congress in Budapest in late May, but given that Webb received
endorsements from 25 of the 40 member associations, something significant would have to happen for
him to lose support.

The first rule of the EFW Oktoberfest is that you should talk about the EFW Oktoberfest. Although
you might find this hard to believe - I normally take a couple of notes at games I attend. However,
upon my return from four days in Hungary and Slovakia, my notes consisted of just four words and
read thus: Florints Against the Machine.
Ireland Under-17 manager Sean McCaffrey has announced a squad of 18 players to participate

McCaffrey and his panel will fly to Budapest on Monday to prepare for the opening fixture two days
