Maybe watching over 30 games of football in the last three weeks has left us a little frazzled
between the ears, but we worked under the assumption that there was a fixed order of penalty takers
to keep to in a shootout scenario. Apparently not so according to former-Premier League referee
Graham Poll.
The semi-final between Spain and Portugal ended in a draw meaning a penalty shoot-out decided
who would be in the final.
The Portuguese side seemingly forgot their order, with Bruno Alves almost reaching the penalty
spot before Nani caught up with him to take his place. Nani took an excellent penalty but Alves
missed his and Spain won.
Cristiano Ronaldo was forced to spent a few extra hours in Ukraine after missing Portugal's
flight home. The team's captain and leading scorer, who earlier missed the chance to take a penalty
in Portugal's Euro 2012 semifinal shootout loss when Spain won before his turn in the order, was
left shaking his head and pulling up the legs of his shorts as he watched the plane fly off without
him.
It was little wonder that Bruno Alves missed his penalty during last night's semi-final shootout
against Spain. The Zenit St Petersburg defender couldn't even hold his nerves sufficiently to count
to five, never mind fire the ball past Iker Casillas. Alves had been told to take the fourth
Portugal penalty.
One of the finalist for Euro 2012 has been decided and it's not Portugal. Instead, it is Spain
who continues their remarkable performance in the last 3 major tournaments involving European
teams. If nothing else, it shows just how young there were back in 2008 when they won the first of
the two trophies they currently hold.
e Italia.
Quarter finals. Whatever happens in the group stage flies out the window. From now on, it's just
about the performances and effort put in within a 90 minutes window. Failing that, an extra 30
minutes and so on. You catch my drift. Anyway, back to what I was trying to say, it comes down to
being to lift your game for a singular match without worrying about how other result can affect
you.
In which, during a Euro Beach Soccer League game a week or so ago, Portugal's Bruno Torres

Portugal have got it all to do in their final game of the group stage in Euro 2012. Portugal lost
their opening game to Germany of all teams, not that Germany is a bad team just that Portugal
defender Bruno Alves and Ronaldo himself said that they would like to show Germany that Portugal

Brazil have handed out the shirt numbers to their Olympic squad. Oscar has been
given the coveted number ten. Lucas Moura, who is expected to start on the bench, has number seven.
Manchester United's Rafael has moved ahead of Danilo to take the right back slot. Tottenham's
Sandro Ranieri has been allotted number five.
Centreback Bruno Uvini's days at Spurs appear to be over after the London club failed to deposit
£2.9 million in São Paulo's bank account. Tottenham had been given until today to decide whether
to take out their option on the 20-year-old but have apparently decided not to pursue the
youngster.
