Post-1994 World Cup: Breaking Into First Division Soccer
After the 1994 World Cup in which the US team showed great progress from 1990, the European soccer
establishment started to notice two things; that the Americans do indeed play soccer and that a few
more of their players are worth signing.
There was a time when Celtic played Real Madrid, Juventus or even Notts Forest back in the old
European Cup. I know I was at all the home games. Two games home and away and winners go through.
Tense, exciting stuff.
Now like others we play Manchester United, Barcelona and co every year, in a Group stage, devised
so the top teams can get through every year and get more money to buy more players to do it all
again the next year.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has reportedly delayed discussions over a new contract, casting
further doubt over his future.
According to News of the World, Agger will not enter negotiations to extend his current deal until
manager Rafael Benitez assures him that he has a first-team future at Anfield.
La Liga Champions Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Danish International Daniel
Agger from Liverpool in the January transfer window, according to Spanish paper Sport.
23-year-old Agger joined the Reds in 2006 from Brondby and his present deal with Rafa Benitez's
side runs out in 2010, with it understood that the defender is growing frustrated at the lack of
first-team opportunities at the Premiership club.
Daniel Agger has intimated that he would be interested in holding talks with Liverpool over a new
deal.
Denmark defender Agger, who joined the Reds from Brondby in 2006, has two years remaining on his
current contract.
The 23-year-old has not featured for Rafa Benitez's side since the first leg of the UEFA Champions
League qualifier against Standard Liege, and reports have suggested he is growing frustrated at his
lack of first-team opportunities.
LIVERPOOL are ready to reassure Daniel Agger his future remains at Anfield by offering the defender
a new deal.
Reports in Agger's homeland have claimed the Denmark international is unhappy at the club and
hinted he could buy out his contract next year.
Having missed almost the whole of last season with a metatarsal problem, the 23-year-old has been
restricted to just one appearance this campaign by the form of Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel
and didn't even make the bench for Saturday's 2-1 win over Manchester United.
Most of the talk surrounding needless showboating comes from England - Manchester, lookin' at you -
but it does, shockingly, happen elsewhere. Take, for instance, Peter Madsen of Brondby IF. His team
was hammering Sonderjyske 5-0 when, in the 88th minute, a ball is sent his way. Some nifty ball
control later, he finds himself [.
Manchester City are in danger of an early exit from Europe after a shock 1-0 home defeat by Danish
side Midtjylland in their UEFA Cup second qualifying round first-leg match on Thursday. The loss
adds to the ongoing turmoil at the club. Mark Hughes had been obliged to state publicly he would be
staying at [.
