World Cup years give all club managers a real dilemma. Do you try and recruit all your transfers
before the tournament or do you wait until it's over?
The fact is, every WC is the world's biggest advertising brochure for players, especially from
less high profile nations. Anyone having a good tournament will immediately be on every manager's
radar even if he's not been so before.
My favorite World Cup ephemera is this brochure, produced for a "Bible Correspondence Course" in
Long Beach, CA. A friend of mine found it on his car windshield, a couple weeks before the
tournament's start. I'm amazed by the ease with which the authors of this text move from "How
about life after death?
In the modern game of football, a footballer is worth more than what he does on the
pitch. A lot of players are bought with their marketability being a key factor in their signing.
Take Michael Owen as an example, his brochure was keen to stress

Stjarnan FC in Iceland have made a name for themselves for their ridiculous
celebrations. But I think it's starting to go too far as the shittest goals are getting an
unnecessarily elaborate celebrations and it is outrageously disrespectful to their
opponents...
