Chelsea had already won their CL group, so this result one of the most memorable in Apoel's
history was hardly a big surprise, especially given that Carlo 'Benny' Ancelotti picked a slightly
weakened team (no Cech, Lampard or Anelka in the starting line-up). Open, entertaining match,
though.
Chonburi Dale left a teasing comment to an earlier post that had me scrambling for Google. Yep,
quiet day.
Now I knew Gumbs was an old git, been round the block a bit and all that. But I never knew he'd had
a spell or two in England with Oldham and Hull.
After surviving spells in those northern shit pits it's no surprise he feels at home in Palembang.
Jozy Altidore and Hull will try to find a way to beat Blackburn with their attacking talisman again
sidelined while Tim Howard and the Toffees face a rough time at the Bridge.
A concern going into today's game was our recent record of firing blanks at The Reebok (no goals in
our four previous visits), but - in what has been a theme of the season so far - it was problems in
defence rather than attack that was to be our undoing.
Team wise Hughes went as I expected - Sylvinho in for Bridge and Bellamy picked ahead of Robinho,
but the recently impressive de Jong was replaced by Vincent Kompany.
Another story that is doing the rounds at the moment is the fact that Real Madrid have lost one of
their key defenders in Pepe for 6 months and they are now focusing their spending power on Ricardo
Carvalho after they had an offer in the summer for Alex turned down. They see Riccy as the ideal
replacement to bolster their defensive line and are even looking at offering Chelsea Ruud Van
Nistlerooy in exchange!
It's getting to the stage with Petr Cech where an increasing number of Chelsea
fans are saying it's time to either drop him, or even sell him (the latter is crazy talk, in my
opinion).
Cech is still a very good keeper, but he has made a few major errors in recent games, resulting
in jeers from some of his own supporters.
Mini match report: Unconvincing win by Chelsea, but at least it ends their
slightly concerning run of four games without a win. Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring after good
work down the right by Alex who I still think is Chelsea's best centre-back before Fred Piquionne
lashed home from close range just after half time.
Ballack takes Konchesky up the Bridge The west London derby got very heated thanks to the efforts
of Michael Ballack. And you thought Chelsea were lacking penetration...
