Two weeks ago, when DC United collapsed late, allowing two goals to the New England Revolution in
rapid succession in what became a 2-0 loss, I saw a father and son walking out of the stadium.
The boy couldn't have been more than 5 years old. As they left through one of the exits, one of the
more hardcore fan folks ran by yelling, "DC Uni-ted!

Another World Cup cycle has come and gone for the U.S. men's national team and it is time to
consider the possibility that a new coach will be leading the team once the next World Cup cycle
begins.
Bob Bradley helped guide the team through a period of transition after the retirements of
Claudio Reyna, Brian McBride and Eddie Pope.
Back in the sepia-toned days of the 2002 World Cup, much of the American team that reached the
quarterfinals was based in the US. Integral contributors like Cobi Jones, Brian McBride, and Eddie
Pope hailed from MLS teams. Now, the 15-year-old league seems marginal, at best. Out of the
established core of starters, only Landon Donovan currently plays for an MLS club, and his future
in the US is in doubt, thanks to his recent successful loan stint at Everton.
DC United dropped to 0-4 on the season with a crushing 2-0 loss to the Fire. Marco Pappa and Brian
McBride scored goals in the final 10 minutes to keep United buried at the bottom of the table as
the only pointless MLS team.

WASHINGTON - Andrew Dykstra couldn't have asked for a better backdrop for his first win in Major
League Soccer. Scores of friends and family members were on hand to watch Chicago's 2-0 against

With July making way for August, the pressure really begins to turn up for clubs in search of a
playoff berth.
The international transfer window has seen a number of moves, as front offices bolster rosters
in an effort to fortify rosters and make a playoff run.
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Chicago Fire target forward and Arlington Heights, Ill., native Brian McBride
and midfielder Patrick Nyarko have some added interest in the 2010 FIFA World Cup when the U.S.
takes on Ghana this Saturday.
McBride was on the 2006 U.S. squad that fell to Ghana, 2-1, and was eliminated from the Cup.

In 2002 in Japan and South Korea, the United States soccer team enjoyed their best World Cup
Finals showing in living memory. Inspired by the performances of Brian McBride and Landon Donovan,
the US team reached the quarter finals of the competition, this despite being widely predicted by
many soccer experts to exit at the group stage.

During the first half of Sunday's 1-0 loss to AC Milan, the ball bounced toward Patrick Nyarko.
With midfielder Ronaldinho running at him, Nyarko touched the ball over the Brazilian star's head
and ran on to the ball.
"It was great, I was laughing it off with my teammates," Nyarko said.
On Friday, we brought you a first look at the Chicago Fire adidas 2010 home and away jerseys as
part of the MLS adidas 2010 New Jerseys Collection. Now here's a detailed look at the Fire's new
kits via a photo shoot featuring Chicago stalwarts Brian McBride and Logan Pause. Included are
closer looks at [.
How will the Fire fare going forward in 2010? (Getty Images)
Today is the start of a new series. As teams get into training camp and new players come on
board its worth looking into each club to see how they are stacking up and what else they need to
do to get ready for the 2010 season. I got this idea from the post I did a few days back on how the
Philadelphia Union were looking.
It is a light day in Major League Soccer, with just three matches on the schedule as MLS takes a
bit of a break on this Easter Weekend.
The Houston Dynamo and Los Angeles Galaxy won key Western Conference clashes on Thursday, while
today offers a pair if inter-conference battles and one key Eastern Conference clash.

WASHINGTON - Marco Pappa's second goal in as many weeks put the Chicago Fire in front in the
80th minute, and super-sub Brian McBride came through with an insurance tally nine minutes later,
as Chicago defeated D.C. United 2-0 to secure its first win of the season.
Sometimes I think my weekly piece at SI.com is like all the girls I dated back in the day: way
too chatty and overly complicated. Sometimes you just want the nitty-gritty. You want to gulp it
right down, not sip on like a wee $22 glass of tawny port. Sometimes you just need something more
like this, Shatz's quick, clever and comprehensive MLS weekend wrap over at Black and Red
United.
Our series on the US at the World Cup continues with the second part of our look at the 1998
World Cup. You can read more about US World Cup appearances in 1930 (part 1), 1930 (part
2), 1934, 1950, the 1950-1990 drought, 1990, 1994, 1998 (part 1) and 1998 (part 2)
Putting 1998 in the past
The US had been humiliated at the 1998 World Cup, its poor performance on the field—one goal
scored in three losses— mirrored by acrimony and dissent off the field.
Wynalda is a blowhard calling for an investigation into Koman Coulibaly.
Here he is making two points.
One that Komen Coulibaly after would always call back a free kick awarded to the USA for an
imaginary infraction. The other was that there should have been more injury time minutes added on
after Aleksandar Radosaveljic was stretchered off.
The Fire are wallowing in the middle of the MLS table, and without a spark to push the team to a
higher level, they might remain unmistakably mediocre.
The loss of John Thorrington will, of course, be major for the Fire. But the new 4-5-1 formation
is allowing Marco Pappa to create more opportunities.
(I posted this over the weekend, but wanted to give our regular readers who may have
missed it a chance to chime in.)
With Brian McBride announcing his retirement from professional soccer at the end of the current
MLS season there has been an outpouring of emotion from grateful U.

Name: Brian McBride
Nationality: American
Position: Centre-forward
Why so hard? Not all football hard men are also dirty players, McBride being
perhaps the best example I can think of.
Please, enough with the FC's. This goes for you too, ACSTL. It's already tired and played. We have
official nicknames in this country. If you want to be traditional, call yourselves the Tigers or
the Crimson or whatever. Leave the FC for the UK.

In the first World Cup of what will hopefully be a weekly-ish podcast, the boys (Daryl, Taylor,
Albert, and Josh) discuss a plethora of US National Team topics including: the captaincy, the
preferred style of play, the potential bright spots, and why Brian McBride's Robot Corpse deserves
a spot over Brian Ching.

A pair of winless teams with proud histories do battle in the nation's capital, as D.C. United
(0-3-0) welcomes the Chicago Fire (0-2-1) to RFK Stadium (7:30 p.m., MLS Direct Kick).
United's most recent setback came at the hands of the expansion Philadelphia Union last weekend,
while the Fire surrendered a late goal to San Jose's Ike Opara in a 2-1 home loss.

The Chicago Fire followed the blueprint D.C. United opponents have succeeded with to a tee. Go
ahead in the 80th minute; secure first win of the season.
For the third consecutive week D.
The Fire outplayed the MLS Cup champions for the better part of the match but came away empty
handed again due to one of the familiar themes that have plagued the team so far this season.....an
inability to finish. Incredibly, Steve Kinney provided the Fire's best chances to score while
hitting the post twice in the second half.
In MLS, the 100-goal club is elite territory.
Only seven players can claim a spot in that club, with Landon Donovan joining it with his 100th
goal, a penalty kick against the Chicago Fire on Sunday evening.
Now, the race to become the next 100-goal score is one led by Donovan's current teammate Edson
Buddle.
He's arguably the most significant American soccer player ever. He was the first draft pick in
MLS history, the first American to score in two World Cups, and he was a legend and former captain
of English Premier League club Fulham, where they thought so highly of him the club named a stadium
pub in his honor.
As Brian McBride retires from the game, we have to take a look back at what made him the most
accomplished striker in US national team history.
It doesn't get more All-American than Brian McBride.
He grew up in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights and played for Buffalo Grove High School.
The Kansas City Wizards stadium project cleared its final hurdles on Tuesday night after funding
for the project was approved by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, Kansas.
The vote clears the way for construction to begin today on a stadium that will be the crown
jewel of a $400 million development project in Kansas City, Kansas.
The Chicago Fire reconstruction project has already brought the Fire new additions Julio
Martinez and Krzysztof Krol (as well as head coach Carlos De Los Cobos), but now Chicago could be
moving closer to adding a new striker.
Former Fulham striker Collins John is set to join the Chicago Fire on a trial during the club's
training camp in Phoenix, sources told SBI on Friday.

The Side: The Chicago Fire have a lot to live up to since they share a sports
city with legendary teams like the Blackhawks, Bulls, White Sox, Cubbies, and da' Bears. All of
those teams have treasure troves of history and lore, but some don't have many trophies (Wrigley
has been the site of more crushed dreams than Poison's tour bus).
Tim Howard's performances with the US National team and Everton FC of the English Premier League
ranks him among the best goalkeepers in the world.
In a recent Fox Sports poll, 79% of the fans felt that Howard is among the top 5-10 goalkeepers in
the world. His performances in last summer's FIFA Confederations Cup helped measure him against the
likes of Casillas & Buffon, and his play in the EPL surely sits him among the top goalkeepers in
the most competitive league in Europe.
West Ham Utd v. Wolverhampton Wanderers (3-23-10) Jonathan Spector came on at the half in the 3-1
loss. It was the first time that Spector did not start since February 10th. Spector is from the
Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, which also happens to be the birthplace of Brian McBride and
the city where Ted Nugent went to high school.
It's Friday, so it must be World Cup preview podcast time again. This week it's the turn of
Group E, which features the talents of Cameroon, Denmark, Japan and the Netherlands (and apparently
Holland too). Your four co-hosts debate the merits of each team in various categories (some
serious: Best Coach, some not so much: Best Celebrity Spokesperson) and then add up the points to
see which two teams go through.
The first part of this USA World Cup history covered USA's1930 to 1950, including the third
place finish and the famous win over England in 1950. But it would be 40 years before the USA
qualified for another World Cup. They made it to Italia '90 partly thanks to Mexico being
disqualified (for fielding overage players in Olympic qualifying) but very much thanks to this goal
from Paul Caliguiri vs Trinidad & Tobago:
1990 World Cup in Italy
So the USA were back in the World Cup.
Before attending a match at Fulham's Craven Cottage, you can have a beer at McBride's the pub named
after the great American striker Brian McBride, now a Fulham legend. Fulham, a small club in the
west of London, has always been in the shadow of its larger neighbor, Chelsea. But at no other club
in Europe have American internationals made their presence felt in the way they have at Fulham.
Comments on the KC game from mlssoccer's Greg Lalas
"Fire and Rain
Okay, I'm flummoxed. I have no idea what to make of this Chicago Fire team.
At moments, they are a flowing, languid example of why it's called the beautiful game. At other
times, they make even the guy who wrote Soccer for Dummies shake his head.
When America was branded the "Land of Opportunity," I'm not sure the opportunity to score early
goals on our national soccer team is what our founding fathers had in mind. If the sight of an
opposing player celebrating a first-half tally against the Stars and Stripes looks familiar, that's
because the U.
By Michael Lewis - CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA (Jul 2, 2010) US Soccer Players -- You've probably heard
the numbers so many times that you can recite them in your sleep. No goals by Americans forwards in
South Africa. No goals by USA strikers in the past two World Cups. In fact, no goals by the front
men over 832 minutes going back to Brian McBride's goal in the 2-0 victory over Mexico on June.
After some heart pounding matches in the Third Round of the US Open Cup we have our elite eight
getting ready to duke it out in the Quarterfinal Round. Once again we saw a tough favorite from the
lower levels pushing their MLS Opponents into the Round of Penalties and somehow stopping all three
of them to advance.
