While players are now reporting to their European clubs' preseason training camps, we're all still
following the movement of American players between various clubs. This got me thinking that after
20 years of following the fortunes of US players in Europe (9 of them as a reporter), its hard not
to notice the evolution of the American presence in the European game.
Part III: The Post-1998 World Cup Breakout
By now, most of the trailblazers had returned home to play in Major League Soccer (MLS); Caligiuri
to Los Angeles, Wynalda to San Jose, Harkes to DC United, and Lalas to New England. Nonetheless,
the number of American players in Europe exploded to unprecedented numbers with over 20 playing in
Germany alone – a combination of established professionals, young players, and journeymen.
36-year-old striker Brian McBride will come out of international retirement to lead the 18-man US
squad in Beijing. McBride, who has 30 goals in 95 appearances for his country, is out of a contract
after leaving Fulham over the summer. McBride's inclusion in the Beijing squad came about almost by
accident.
I just wanted to include a link and comment on this article by Kartik Krishnaiyer on the Major
League Soccer Talk blog about Sven Goran Eriksson's early success with the Mexican national team
and how the U.S. National Team could learn from that. I essentially agree that Eriksson has done a
good job with Mexico and that I too was somewhat skeptical about this appointment when it was made.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past six weeks, you'll know that Brian Mcbride not
only wants to come back to MLS, he wants to go specifically to Chicago. Easy right, no,
Toronto owns the rights to Mcbride and they're asking a steep price for it. Names that have
been mentioned have [.
As a supported from America, I've always had a soft spot for Fulham. With Brian McBride, Carlos
Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, and Kasey Keller all previously (or currently) on their
roster, Fulham is a squad that has always trusted and depended on American players.
McBride was Fulham's evergreen captain - the man who was always there to score that crucial goal.
The festivities leading up to the US men's 500th game have begun as the official US MNT bog asking
readers to pick the best three US players ever. Their one rule, it should only be based on time
with the national team, meaning club performance is out.
So who are the best three US Nats ever?
As we all know this Brian McBride deal to Chicago via Toronto hasn't gone nearly as some would have
liked. Well most of those people being in the Windy City at least would have liked this deal to be
handled a little sooner but just as we all know by now that hasn't happened and [...]
FULHAM Notable arrivals: Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough), Zoltan Gera (West Brom) Notable
departures: The club did a massive purging after narrowly escaping relegation last season. Included
in the nine cuts was Carlos Bocanegra. Brian McBride also chose to leave the club....
Just when all the turmoil surrounding Brian Mcbride had settled down, commissioner Don
Garber told Rob Stone of ESPN that a solution regarding Mcbride had been reached. He said the
announcement will come tomorrow. We are not sure what the agreement is, but we will find
out the details tomorrow.
Thanks for the tip off from our friends to the north.
According to this article:
TORONTO — Toronto FC's search for goal scoring went to Portugal as the Major League Soccer
club made an attempt to sign Benfica striker Nuno Gomes.
But both sides of the negotiation that has taken place over the past month say there will be no
deal.
Press play on the image of US Olympic midfielder Maurice Edu in China (from his personal website)
and you will see 1st hand why this maybe the most low-energy athletic event in history. Ever.
Period. FACT! When you have superb physical specimens like Edu, Jozy Altidore, and Brian McBride
saying that it's too hot, they can't see and they can't breathe WHEN THEY ARE JUST WALKING you know
there is a very real problem.
The US MNT's blog continues their countdown to the 500th American international match by asking
about the best goals in US men's history. With 665 from which to choose, this could take some time.
Or then again, maybe not.
Here is my top three:
1. Paul Caligiuri - 1989 World Cup Qualifier vs.

Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard curled a beautiful free kick past Aston Villa goalkeeper Scott
Carson in the 86th minute to give the Cottagers a sorely-needed 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage on
Sunday.
As one of, if not the most successful US field players ever in England, Brian McBride has been a
solid source of pride for American fans, however those days might be about to come to an end. The
soon to be 36 year old is weighing his options and might decide to leave the top-level English
league in order to return to MLS.
Its about that time. The time when the silly season is fully underway in Europe and when MLS clubs
are looking to make mid-season changes. The sale of Jozy Altidore to Villarreal, for a nice chunk
of change, $10 million also makes us consider the other side of the equation as MLS fans wonder,
who they might loose as well.
One thing we've seen over the last couple of weeks in the Brian McBride sweepstakes is that Toronto
FC (the MLS holders to McBrides allocation rights) are not messing around in getting someone or
something that they want in a trade deal for the American striker. And why shouldn't they budge?
There's no rule saying you [.
With the announcement today that US goalkeeper Brad Friedel has signed a three year deal with Aston
Villa – Americans will have yet another team of expats to tune in to this coming football
season.
Last season Fulham became the side of choice for many newbie EPL fans because of the presence of
Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, Kasey Keller, and Brian McBride at Craven Cottage.
Paris was practically at their doorstep when Brian McBride and his family lived in England. The
rest of Europe, too. Now there are cousins next door, with more just down the street. McBride's
brother lives nearby, and wife Dina can make it to the home of pretty much anyone in her family
within 10 minutes.
Michael Bradley didn't let his US/Mexico disappearance get to him and continued his scoring ways
for Heerenveen. This time, the 20 year old halted PSV's dominance of the Frisians with a 52nd
minute equalizer. It's 17th goal overall, 13th in Eredivisie play. See below... Danny Szetela -
newly loaned out to Brescia of the Serie B [.
The guy on the left is Chad Barrett. Congrats Toronto You have your very own Wayne Rooney.
Ives Galarcep on his blog soccerbyives.net is confirming part of our anonymous emailed rumor of
early this morning. However his information seems to indicate Barrett has been dealt in a package
of money and a draft pick rather than an additional player.
What's already been a busy afternoon delayed this discussion to go out. As some of you may have
noticed in recent weeks across the soccerblog-net or on the message boards like BigSoccer, a few
former MLS players are possibly set on making a return to the States. The reasons are mixed on a
couple guys, either [.
Rating: 5 (Very Good)
A source 'in a position to know' wrote us the following this morning. We have previously received
good information from this source so have no reason not to believe him.
"Hello, I think you guys should know that a deal has been reached to bring Brian McBride to
Chicago.
An interesting move by the Chicago Fire as they acquire the rights to Brian McBride from Toronto
F.C. The Fire won't actually get to have McBride play for them until after the Olympic games are
over, but that will serve as a good way to get him into game shape and ready for the stretch run
and the playoffs.
This rumor comes to us courtesy of the BBC.
It seems to be the first mention we've had of him returning to the Columbus where he played his
football from 1996-2004 before joining the Craven Cottage based side.
Brian McBride will be offered a new one-year deal with Fulham but the 35-year-old American striker
may still opt to join Columbus Crew in the States.

In a group that includes quality teams like Nigeria and Holland, the U.S. needed to beat Japan
today in its Olympics Group B opener.
A Stuart Holden goal proved enough for a 1-0 win and while not particularly convincing, the U.S.
took its chance while Japan did not take their more plentiful chances.
I had thought about going through each US player who saw significant playing time in the Olympics
and judging him on whether his stock rose or fell in terms of his prospects with the senior
team.
But I can't think of many players who improved their standings with performances in this
tournament.
Is Eddie Johnson on his way out of Kansas City to play for Fulham?
The Daily Mail reports that Eddie "the Juice" Johnson has left the US National team training
camp which is a sign that a deal with Fulham is near. Johnson has had an up and down career
recently with the Kansas City Wizards.
Brian McBride and Clint Dempsey started for the Cottagers as they trounced a sad looking Reading
squad. Steve Coppell's side forgot how to attack - and you know that happened when Andre Bikey is
the only one that can find a shot on net. Kasey Keller manned the nets as Roy Hodgson shattered his
"only [.
US international Clint Dempsey has decided to stay with the Cottagers after signing a contract
extension that will keep him in West London through 2010. It had been rumored that if Fulham failed
to stay in the Premier League, Dempsey would move along to another top-flight club, but this move
seems to kill such talk.
Grant Wahl from Sports Illustrated wrote an excellent analysis of the U.S. - Holland game in this
article. I have to say though that I still can't believe that GERALD SIBON of all people is the
Dutch player to beat that U.S. team. This is the same Gerald Sibon who has bounced around Europe
playing for Sheffield Wednesday, Nurenburg, and various teams in the Dutch Eredivise.
Somewhere there is a big smile on the face of Don Garber and the rest of the Major League Soccer
front office staff. One of their originals could possibly be on their way back to finish out his
days in a MLS uniform. American forward and retired U.S. national standout Brian McBride has parted
ways with [.
Peter Nowak has released his 18 man roster for Beijing and there are not a lot of surprises. As
expected, Nowak went with Bad Guzan in goal and McBride up top. Both will give the team much needed
depth in their positions with McBride providing a little bit more then Guzan.
The overage selection that could benefit the most from this experience is New England's Michael
Parkhurst.
The 28 year old oft injured US international defender may be coming back to America....According to
Soccer Insider Steve Goff:
"Two sources tell me that U.S. defender Cory Gibbs, whose promising career has been
interrupted by injuries, is close to returning to MLS and will be available through an allocation
process in the next couple weeks.
Fulham under Roy Hodgson are basking in the expectation that they will be able to escape the drop
from the English Premier League at the end of the season. While some of the injured players are
returning with manager Roy Hodgson's January signings also anticipated to come good, there are
people who are focusing on [.
What are some of the worst permanent/career ending football injuries? Brian McBride- If Fulham's
captain looks a bit poker faced all the time, it's for a very good reason: like a drunken sorority
girl dozing at the bar- he can't feel his face. During McBride's long career he's taken his share
of hits, and many of them have gone [.
Toronto's huge demands made to Chicago in exchange for the rights to former US international
striker Brian McBride has left the former Fulhman mans prospects for returning to MLS during this
season in Limbo. According to sources within the Chicago front Office, the names of Justin Mapp,
Chad Barrett and Chris Rolfe have been brought up by Toronto as compensation.
I have gotten several messages this morning about the deal we discussed last night. It is indeed
going to happen. The trade between Chicago and Toronto FC for the rights to Brian McBride does
involve Chad Barrett. According to one of my sources who confirmed it to me this morning (as well
as it has been [.
Michael Orozco's elbow to Solomon Okoronkwo's chest as the two grappled was picked up by the
German referee who gave Orozco marching orders. The US were reduced to ten men in the 4th
minute.
It was an ill advised foul which happened right in front of the referee and he was forced into
taking the more harsh option.
